My current party has just completely finished the Burnt Offerings section of the Rise of the Runelords Adventure path.

Currently I have:

  • Gamunar Cateyes (Human (Shoanti) male, Fighter 1/Ranger 4) - his player is female
  • Ilda Sunroamer (Dwarf female, Fighter 1/Cleric (Sarenrae - see "Skyquest")
  • Saffire of Clan Abd Zada (Half-Elf Female (Varisian), Sorceress (Elemental: Fire) 5th - Half-Sister of Emyralda)*
  • Emyralda Urindaronhesarin (Half-Elf Female (Varisian), Rogue 5th - Half Sister of Saffire)*
*- Yes, their mothers were seduced by the same wandering elf adventurer.

No, here is my question: The RL husband of Gamunar's player wants to join the campaign. He wants to make a Female Shoanti Barbarian. How would you suggest I integrate the new character into the group?

Spoiler:
I was thinking of replacing Grayst Sevilla in Habe's Sanatorium. I do realize that this is fraught with peril - for both the new character and for me as the GM.

I don't think I'd do that. It didn't seem like a good way to get someone in when I ran the adventure.

The obvious solution is to provide a background connection between the two Shoanti (sibling, cousin, mate, etc.) and introduce the new character during the down time after Burnt Offerings. Two other considerations you may want to use (and pass on details to the new player): foreshadowing (you may want to hint at future developments, such as having the new character be the only survivor of a giant raid against Gamunar's home tribe) and individual character development (facilitator or foil to Gamunar's goals and personality).

Let him be a suspect for the murders at first. He'll quickly be acquitted but people still distrust him so he'll have a great motivation to solve those murders.

Or have a victim be a close friend/lover/family member.

I like the idea of mixing them have him be a family member, and that there tribe has been destroyed by raiding giants.
Have him show up the same day as the first murder and kinda make it look like he could be guilty

Is this a better idea?

Spoiler:
For some unknown reason, the Skoan-Quah Boneslayer Zakok attempted to restore the Sklar-Quah, Aicha Sun-Dancer, warrior back to life, forsaking his duty to the ancestors. He called out to the darkest spirits for the power to bring her back. A spirit did answer him ... Urgathoa.

But, the smoke of her spirit had already left her, so what awoke from her grave was not truly alive.

Fleeing from what he had done, it fell to (our yet to be named Skoan-Quah Barbarian) to return Aicha's body back to its sleep. And now (he/she) must hunt down and slay the traitor Zakok - now named Zakok Forsworn.

(He/she) has tracked the traitorous Boneslayer along the entire length of Yondabakari River. Each time (he/she) nearly had caught up to Zakok, he disturbed the spirits of the local dead and sent these lost souls to delay (our yet to be named Skoan-Quah Barbarian). In the resulting terror and confusion, the traitor would again slip away.

(This makes me think of "The Fugitive")

Game Specific Notes:

Spoiler:
I am thinking of replacing the Dread Ghoul Rogers Craesby with whatever Aicha has become (suggestions for something about the same CR?). Craesby would still be there ... as one of the normal ghouls, with his key.

This would allow me to motivate the new character to continue with the part for a while, and add some additional treasure to what I feel is a generally underwhelming aspect of the adventure.

I honestly think some of the other suggestions are better than this one as they really incorporate more of the Shoanti nature (Shoanti are not really a part of this adventure in any significant way) into the character and I think that will be appreciated by the character.

That said, here is my suggestion...

The new character is working as a farm hand on one of the outlying farms that is attacked. He is instrumental in driving off the attack and is then asked by other farmers to lead a group of them to investigate. Things basically proceed as written from this point with the character replacing Farmer Grump. He then feels it is his duty to continue the investigation with the group both to regain his honor at having to flee and avenge the death of those people he considered friends.
