Where are the rules for creating arms and armor from special substances, such as Adamantium, Mithril, Darkwood, etc?

I can see find the price of a Mithril Shirt and and Elven Chainmail, but what if I want to create a Mithril Breastplate?

Also, is someone who is only proficient with light armor, and not medium armor, proficient with a Mithril Breastplate?

For the moment, you have to use the standard DMG / SRD rules on that stuff.

Thanks a bunch.

How about my second question? Is someone who is only proficient with light armor, and not medium armor, proficient with a Mithril Breastplate?

SRD wrote:
Most mithral armors are one category lighter than normal for purposes of movement and other limitations. Heavy armors are treated as medium, and medium armors are treated as light, but light armors are still treated as light.

I take this to be that the limitation from lack of medium armour proficiency is removed.

EDIT: The entire entry can be found here within the SRD.

As far as 3.x goes, that is correct. However, there's been some discussion of changing that in PFRPG, so that mithral armor will count as one category lighter for movement and most other purposes, but not for proficiency. Basically, you're proficient in a given armor or not, regardless of what material it's made of.

Scarab Sages

That's gonna bite some folk in the butt!

But it would explain why there is such a thing as a mithral chain shirt, which, under the SRD, is pointless (pay a few gp extra for mithral chainmail, since they're both light armour).

I'm not arguing your point, but saying a Mithral Shirt is pointless is a bit harsh. (2 more Max Dex Bonus, 3 less penalty, and 10% less Spell Failure, is hardly pointless.)

Scarab Sages

Yes, OK, pointless is a bit harsh. (and it's 2 less penalty, since you can't go below zero, but it may make a difference to some)

I just remember the dismay of so many PCs, when they find a mithral shirt, and think "Whoah! That counts as no armour, right?", only to be told, no, it still encumbers you.

Especially when they're strong enough to carry a sack of anvils chained to their back, with no encumberance, but not a purpose-built, form-fitting vest, weighing 12 lb.
Hennet's gimp costume must weigh more than that, with all the buckles, and 'ahem' accessories...

The shirt has 1 less armour bonus, but allows two more dex. So if you're dextrous enough, it might pay out to save more than 3000 gp.

Exactly.

The three "best" armors available in 3.x (apart from celestial armor, which is not common) are mithral chain shirt (+4 armor, +6 max. Dex, 1100 gp), mithral breastplate (+5 armor, +5 max. Dex, 4200 gp), and mithral full plate (+8 armor, +3 max. Dex, 10,500 gp). With a few exceptions (druids, monks, sorcerers, and wizards) that are restricted from wearing them, pretty much everyone uses them at high level (12th and up) if they're available. If anything, having mithral not affect proficiency will just make mithral breastplate and mithral full plate a little less common as barbarians, bards, rangers, and rogues are slightly more restricted in armor choice.
