If it's any consolation, the matinee I saw today was 9/10th empty. Since I ended up hating the movie, I would say that you lucked out in not being able to get tickets.
Five origins stories is a lot of talking and prologue to cram into a single "action" movie; to be fair, the graphic novel was never meant to be action-oriented.

Just got back from seeing it.
Despite a rainy afternoon there was still one pack of yacking <insert rude descriptive term of choice>'s, and one <insert disparaging comment on mental capacity of choice> who was unable to comprehend the concept of turning off his cell phone.
Still . . .
I liked it.
I do think it was a bit cramped. Of course, nobody wants a 4 hour movie anymore, and it would be a waste to put this on network TV without all the sex and violence.
And I do see why Alan Moore continues to object to translating his graphic novel visions to film. It is indeed a significant moral quandary, as desire for the movie is as immense as respect for the author.

I saw an interview with Alan Moore a short while back, and he explained it in terms of :he was annoyed at a couple of (specific) film makers and so set a principle that he wouldnt get involved with films of his works. He hinted that sometimes he has regretted setting the principle, but having set it, feels its necessary to stick to it.
"I'll tell you about Rorschach..."
Haley *is* Rorschach. Sheer class performance.

Having not been able to eye-tolerate the GN (I read the text boxes), the film was a pleasant surprise. My commentary here is strictly on the film.
For me, it was almost like being tossed back to age 14, bringing back some elements from nearly 25 years ago, then skipping forward over the next few years until the Berlin Wall fell.
Mulling it over the past few hours, I'd have to say that the film made me think much more than I would have thought for an R-rated movie, especially post-movie.
