I also started to type a post suggesting that Khalit blast it into unconsciousness, and decided Martika would be unamused.

I hope you'll excuse my plagerism this once - I wanted to have lyrics for the song she sang on the way back to camp and didn't have time to write my own this time. I think the ones I chose fit quite well though.

Kudos to anyone who actually recognizes the song though.

Should I feel like an uncultured barbarian if I can't recognize it? ;)

No, it's pretty obscure. It actually was pretty difficult just looking up the lyrics online.

I know, I'm enjoying following their attempts as well. Should've brought a bard. Tsk, tsk.

I like those lyrics, but I couldn't find the source with a (quick) Google search. Hopefully, you'll eventually reveal their origin, Count.

In any case, a really nice touch! :)

Well, I just took a look over at French Wolf's game to see how the goat rescue is coming for that group...and promptly earned some dirty looks for laughing out loud in a quiet computer lab. :D

I've also come to the conclusion that Rambler went way too easy on you guys. ;)

Ah, well, at least the pugwampi is dead, and I'm sure you'll never, never have to deal with any more of them...ever.

Ever. Really.

Larcifer, great post. I was hoping someone would ask Dashki about his background. Unfortunately, the reply will have to wait until later, because I really have to be studying for a final right now... :(

The song is "Into the Night" by Clara Edwards. I remembered it from a friend who used the song for All-State Choir tryouts in High School...many years ago. And yes, in that light, it seems really strange that I remember the song at all, much less thought of the connection here in a PbP.

Just remember, everyone. If I ever DM this game again, or for future pbp's I run.... it's all Mal's fault for saying that.

For fighting the fire, defeating the pugwampi, recovering Rombard, and solving the mystery of the fire's origin, each PC has earned a total of 265 XP.

Nice job, guys.

Dangit, that's twice you've ninja'd my post while I was trying to get song lyrics out!

I'd think that it should be especially important that Trevvis fail the will save against the lullaby, as I imagine he's still eager to share a drink with Kara...

Unfortunately, Trevvis had already gone to bed, so he missed the song. The party got back to camp really late. :(

Almah and Garavel stayed up, because they're in charge. Hadrod and Hadrah stayed up because they were worried about Rombard. Everybody else was already in bed.

Love those lyrics, though. Keep 'em coming!

I don't know why I've never played a bard before...I have so many great resources to throw into the character to flesh it out! It's really quite fun! (and yes, these last lyrics were original...but I didn't take the time to make them rhymed or metered)

Or maybe it's because when I play, I tend to want to play characters that are as different as possible to myself...and since I'm sort of a bard (I sing in a Barbershop Quartet), that was always not so appealing to me.

Anyways, yeah this is fun! And I can do so much more with a bard in PbP than I ever would be able to bring to a game table! I could just see it: "Hold on guys, I need to go and pen some inspirational lyrics real quick so my character can use bard song and we can continue with combat..."

I hope that no one is put off by Almah's reaction upon learning that Kara is a slave. It seemed to me, though, that this might be the natural attitude of a Katapeshian (for whom slaves are just another commodity)...especially one of relatively high position.

And, should we ever reach the point that Kara is granted her freedom, well...it will just make the moment all the more sweet.

Perfectly reasonable. And from Kara's point of view, I think it was actually extremely generous not only to give her wages to the group (why pay for something that you already own) as well as sending her off with the group instead of making use of her services at the camp. That I attribute directly to Kara's success last night with the goat - had she not had such an role in bringing him back to camp there would be no reason at all for her to go with an adventuring party.

Anyways, the cat's out of the bag. I can't wait to see everyone's reaction (especially certain former slaves).

Oh, and Mal, did you typo the amount to be distributed to the rest of the party? Was that meant to be 40gp each?

Grand Lodge

Mal

Spoiler:
How does this fall in line vis-a-vis alignments? Believe it or not, Khalit is Lawful Good, as is Martika. Slavery is legal here, but they would still be opposed to owning another person. I'd like to take responsibility for Kara, or more likely pawn it off on Martika, but with the intention on working towards legally freeing her.

Just needed to work thru motivations in writing, and make sure that I wasn't going to screw Martika out of paladinhood.

I imagine securing Kara's freedom is going to be an ongoing pet-project for a lot of us. :)

And yeah, it's fine Mal. The player's guide did say this culture was tough for good characters after all. ;)

You've nailed my thinking right on the head, CB. Kara has proven her worth in the eyes of Almah, to be sure! (Although there's certainly some matagaming happening as well...I'd hate to exclude one of the PCs from the adventuring, after all. That'd be kind of mean.)

As for the money, I had intended that to be 240 gp total for each of the other five PCs...200 gp for each individual, plus Kara's share split five ways. Sorry it was unclear.

Rambler,

Spoiler:
No worries here over alignment. I had pretty much intended that somewhere down the line Kara would be able to earn her freedom (it's even the name of her campaign trait!) Most law-abiding citizens probably don't agree with every law on the books. But there are right and wrong ways to try to affect change. If Martika and Khalit started slaughtering slave owners in an attempt to free their slaves, we would have a problem. But, if they work within the legal system to seek Kara's freedom it's not only okay, it's encouraged. As an agent of the Pactmasters, Almah has the authority to grant Kara her freedom...she will just need to be convinced over time to do so.

Valkyrie Paine wrote:

My thoughts exactly...but Almah will likely be a hard sell, especially since in the Count's characterization of Kara she hasn't exactly shown a lot of wiliingness to speak up on her own behalf. (That's not a criticism, CB)

So, you'll have to work at it over time through the power of good role-playing! Fortunately, I have the utmost confidence in this group to do just that. :)

Ah, ok I wasn't including the previous 200 you had promised to everyone already. 200+40=240, got it.

It's cuz Kara's so darned cynical! She doesn't consider the possibility that she could ever be free as anywhere near feasible, so she acts as if it's an absolute forever. I imagine it'll take quite the paradigm shift to obtain freedom (that or freedom will do it for her).

Of course, it'll take a bit of work just for her to accept that people might be nice just for the sake of being nice. I think we're gonna have some fun interactions between her and our lovely cleric...hehehe.

Ha! Being unsure that she does what she does purely out of kindness or if she's only doing it to earn her own redemption is actually one of Ikethru's angst sources. This is gonna be fun. ;)

Ah! Dangit your last post just ruined Kara's opportunity to completely misunderstand Ikethru's intentions and show up in her tent one night!

Well, maybe not completely...maybe I can still work that in. Cuz the situational awkwardness that such a situation would provoke is just too fun to pass up on.

Your humble DM confesses that he has lost track of everyone's hit point total. Therefore, let us say that, thanks to the ministrations of Ikethru and a good night's sleep, everyone is at full hp.

Valkyrie:

Spoiler:
The only difference between Kara and the girls who work at the local brothel is that Kara is first and foremost an entertainer. You could call her an escort, a courtesan, or a companion just as easily. So in her experience, the only people who have ever gone out of their way to do nice things to her are ones who wish to bed her.

That in mind, I was going to have her proceed with the assumption that Ikethru was desiring such a favor from Kara, and when the opportunity presents itself, drop her dress, or something along those lines, which would I'm sure provoke quite the shock, horror, and/or embarrassment from our reformed cleric.

If you're game, we can try to work it in. Anything you could do that while seeming innocent, could be taken the wrong way, things like that.

But, since you've already revealed you were a former slave, you could just press that issue instead and try to reinforce the real reason you're trying to help, and that there is no ulterior motive. It's your call.

I'm good to go - I'm sure Khalit will take care of all the logistics needed for me, such as food rations, water, bedroll, etc. So nice to have someone doing all that so I don't have to worry about it!

I'm assuming that Javeed and Martika are willing to accept Almah's employment offer and the mission to secure the monastery, even though they haven't said so IC.

However, I have been dragging my feet just a bit to see whether Martika wants to follow up any further at the ruined Harrower's wagon.

Javeed accepts...it is a given for him, no need for pleasantries

Craig, if Martika does search Eloais' burned wagon before the party sets out...

Spoiler:

...she won't really find anything too interesting. Mostly it coincides with Garavel's prior report: Lots of sooty ashes, a few broken bottles and vials, a cracked crystal ball, and numerous pools of colorful melted wax...Eloais loved his candles, and they proved the death of him when the pugwampi (and its bad luck aura) came nosing around. If Martika is the type to really get down and dirty in the mess, she actually can harvest 55 gp in assorted blackened coins. I'll leave it you whether that's something she is likely to do.

FYI, one house rule I've always held for 3rd edition is that a creature with Improved Grab can always use it to grapple a creature of its own size or smaller. Be forewarned.

Sorry about the delay. I definitely would have followed up on the investigation, accepted Almah's offer, etc. but would not have looted the remains of the wagon.

Good to know. Thanks Craig!

Liberty's Edge

Ok, this is a bit of metagaming, but counting up the damage done in the likely hits, I think we've probably managed to kill them both of the scorpions before Kara even got a chance to throw her first dart!

<sniff>

That is, unless Javeed or Mirama get grappled and immobilized before they're able to attack or something. I'm not holding my breath though.

It's that darn 20' move speed! 'Course, it didn't help that Kara was placed as far away from them as possible. I think Mal caught a bit of the infectious disease of believing that the poor halfling is defenseless. Not that I haven't promoted that idea or anything though :p

It just'll be that much more satisfying when she turns into a bladed, whirling dancer of death. Muahahahahahaha!

Grand Lodge

Hey all, just a heads up that I will be AFK for most of the Victoria Day weekend (this one coming up, Fri-Mon) for CanGames in Ottawa. I will be gaming with Craig there, so he is likely to be the same.

He's going to run his 2 PFS scenarios there: Frozen Fingers & Prince of Augustana.

Everyone's going on vacation this week!

Well, it is May I guess. ;)

We'll have these scorpions cooked and ready to eat before then, hopefully! Have a good time, guys!

Liberty's Edge

Pssst! Mal...it's your turn!

I shouldn't complain too much - my own tabletop game has been on hiatus for a few weeks while I've been trying to get things prepared for the next session...and not seeming to ever find the time to do it.

I'm just having so much fun with this game! I want to keep it going...and waiting is....well......waiting!

[taps foot impatiently]

So...uh....how's it goin', guys? I'm trying to stay awake at work, have been here since 6:00am, and only got 3 hours of sleep last night. Other than that, life's good. My bro-in-law and his wife are staying at our place for a few days and have proven to be the only people in my wife's family that I can not only stand, but actually enjoy spending time with and look forward to seeing. They got in last night just after midnight and then we all sat around and talked for a few hours. Oops!

Um...it rained really hard this morning. It started to get light as I was driving to work, then it got darker again! The world was going backwards! Cats and dogs sleeping together, mass hysteria!

Did you see the new blog post? I can't wait for the final PRPG book - it's looking awesome. I still wish there were male and female pictures for each race, but otherwise it's shaping up quite nicely.

My favorite drink in the world is a Mexican concoction called Maizena. There's a trick to it, though - most people only know of the common flavors such as Strawberry and Chocolate, but they come in many other flavors. So what you do is take a packet of Coconut and a packet of Nut (hazelnut flavor), mix it together, and use a few teaspoonfuls of that mixed into a mug of hot milk, then sweeten to taste (again, a few teaspoonfuls of sugar is good). It's rich, flavorful, thick, and creamy. It might make you drowsy though - dang good stuff. Yummy!

I think it's just going to be a slow week in every game. At least almost every game I'm in has slowed down suddenly. I think a lot of people are caught up in finals and vacation time.

The gnome in the new preview makes me feel better about how I'm playing mine. ;)
