Final Crisis... Final Verdict

I can sum up my reaction in three words

What a mess..

Did the last year actually contribute anything at all to the DC canon...I doubt it. Sorry Grant I expected more from you.

Final grade...D

Wellard, where do you think it went off the rails?

To be honest, Jade, I'm not quite sure it started ON the rails. I can be convinced otherwise.

On second thought, I must rescind that statement and say it went off the rails when we started down the path of cosmic insanity. Having Darkseid look to take over Earth? That's fine, could have been truly great. But become part of an evil megaversal sinkhole effect? OK, now we're pushing it. After all the disparate parts of the story are put together, we need a comprehensible whole picture. It's not really that comprehensible nor satisfying. We'll be seeing repercussions for a long time (being fair, big events like this usually do that) but in this case I don't really want to know. I want to get back to "normal", whatever that is. But the Omens and Origins stuff makes me wonder just that will happen with Blackest Night ahead . . .

Part of the fun of a roller coaster is the anticipation before the drop. But if you're constantly in free-fall, with no time to catch your breath, things just become vanilla. You get so used to an adrenaline rush that it's not fun anymore. And I'm hoping Final Crisis doesn't cause that to happen with what's coming up.

Final Verdict: Could have lived without it.

Thank you much, Lathiira.

I'm getting a late start catching up on recent trends in comic bookery, and I've noticed that certain bold moves in the storytelling seem to be stirring a lot of agita for fans. I truly appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughtful insights.

Actually there is one of the off shoots I am enjoying and thats Legion of 3 Worlds...mainly because its brought my Legion(the original, accept no substitutes)back..its also fun to see how the various versions of a a character interact with each other...well as far as I'm concerned it's been fun..but I will leave final pronouncement on that to the Prophet of Istus

So far I'm enjoying it as well. I really liked the first issue a lot! Have you been getting both covers?

You're welcome. And if you're being sarcastic, you're still welcome. I have a different opinion on the spin-offs, I admit, and I liked the Final Crisis: Revelations story arc. Our little run with Flash's rogues was decent, but you'll need to get details from Eileen or someone else on the Legions of 3 Worlds arc. But the main story? My point's fairly clear.

I meant every word I said and even every punctuation mark.

I don't know what it is about me that has people thinking I'm pulling chains. Here I am thinking that I come across as direct as an icy blast from a waterhose up the wazoo, and yet you're the second person this week to wonder if I'm having you on.

I think it should have been more than 7 issues. The story seemed too rushed and overcrowded at times. The tie-ins helped, but, overall, I think the story needed a little more space to grow properly.

I'm curious to see if DC repeats what it did with Infinite Crisis and 52, and releases a novelization of the series.

Sorry about that reply, Jade. I'm not used to courtesy and manners anymore. And certainly not well-spoken courtesy and manners either. Out of curiosity, do you have a take on Final Crisis or are you deciding whether or not to partake of the Kool-Aid?

Scarab Sages

Final Crisis was....sad. I've read Grant Morrison's stuff before, and it was usually pretty good. FC was not. Neither was Batman R.I.P.

For me, the story was disjointed - that's the best word I can come up with. It didn't help that they initially said the story would be self-contained in the series, which turned out not to be the case. The Superman Beyond 3D story was apparently necessary for background on Mandrakk (at least that's what I heard). I'm not sure if the Legion story was necessary to understanding the rest of it.

It also didn't help that they, in effect, fixed things and won the day thanks to what was, in essence, a miracle karaoke machine.

All in all, I hope this leads to less Grant Morrison work. If anyone feels strongly about FC (whether for or against), and hasn't yet done so, I encourage you go the the DC Comics messageboards and let your opinion be known.

Sovereign Court

Most of what has been said I agree with totally...

Revelations was interesting..and at least allowed Crispus Allen to 'live' with himself.

As for Lo3W...the final page of part three was perfect....totally unexpected and made complete sense..if parts 4 and 5 are as good then at least FC will have given us one true classic.

The main story was confusing...illogical and frankly no different from any other crisis that had gone before ..the multiverse is just as confusing as it ever was..and some of the reasoning behind some of the events was..spurious to put it mildly.I thought using the Miracle Machine was supposed to drive you mad..I just hope it gets broken very quickly

Absolutely fine, Lathiira, and thank you.

I'm looking to get a handle on the changes that took place in the industry. Multiple differing storylines for many superheroes due to the alternate universe type convention seem to have just blown it all up. The first alternate take I can recall occured during my youth, and that was the Batman: Dark Knight series. Now, you can't just like Sasquatch from Alpha Flight. Now Sasquatch is a lady bigfoot and probably appears in a storyline where she's in love with Kazar, the caveman, who's leading a team of forgotten one-time comic headliners in battle against the more popular superheroes. She probably also appears in a storyline where aliens take her for a gerbil, name her Bum Bum qne keep her in their 'alien ant farm' type cage. Or then there's her in that Marvel/DC crossover, Batman: Shaggy Knight.

Final Crisis was worse, believe it or not, than Marvel's Secret Invasion. Which was horrible.

I just about stopped buying DC stuff altogether after Final Crisis. They've completely lost their minds.
If it wasn't for my enjoyment of the current Green Lantern stuff, I would have completely given up on DC. Well, Green Lantern, Justice Society and Secret Six. All other titles are gone, and I'm not adding any new ones.
And don't get me started on Justice League and how bad that is.

Seems we have similar views on things, though I honestly liked Secret Invasion as a premise from the start. The execution of the main story arc wasn't very interesting, though: everyone got together in the park for a big fight. *yawn* I just want to see some "little" disasters for a while. I'm a bit tired of the enormous ones over in DC. Though I can't claim Marvel's better about that necessarily, but at least Secret Invasion was (mostly) contained one one planet in one dimension.

Sovereign Court

DC has had a habit over the last twenty years of piling major disater on major disaster and frankly I'm sick of it its time to tone things down guys...and don't get me started on Trinity which I am only buying now because it puts money in the pockets of my friend who runs our towns only comic store(he's also my FLGS)

Creepy...those are the ones I read too.

As for "The Blackest Night"...I am pretty sure it will be fantastic!! Geoff Johns hasn't let me down yet (tho I might be a little biased being both of us are from Michigan and all!)

I'm just wondering with the Black Lanterns and all...

Spoiler:
I mean J'onn, Kal-L, and Kon-El? those three alone are powerhouses. Add rings on top of them...

Dark Archive

Grant Morrison intended for FC to be disjointed. I read an interview somewhere (sorry can't recall the site-link) but also yes what was originally going to be a self contained story was changed when they gave the reigns over to him. It was as if he ignored much of the momentum of the previous big events to do something based on what he was working on (Seven Soldiers I think it was?). Eh. I'll stick with Marvel.
