Well Duh... EL= CR?

Ok, I'm not to bright. I have 5-6 seventh level characters in my AP RotR. What is the CR level they should be fighting. They fought a Bulette last game and went through it pretty easy.

They are travelling overland From Magnimar to Wartle.

5 7th level PCs can probably still take EL 7's as a base without too much imbalance. 6 7th level PCs can probably handle EL 8's as a base.

Assuming EL 7 is the base, EL 8-9 would be rough and EL 10-11 would be very difficult.

Looking at the rules on page 291, a party of 5 7th level characters has an APL of 7. According to table 12-1, that means a CR 7 encounter should be "Average" difficulty.

However, a party of 6 7th level characters has an APL of 8, so a CR 7 encounter should be "Easy" difficulty.

You know I have never use CR for encounters i always used my judgement to create encounters it has worked for me but i I think i might have a go at using CR adn EL etc... sounds like it saves time.

CR is the Challenge Rating for an individual creature / trap / whatever.

EL is the Encounter Level, or the approximate rating of all creatures / traps / conditions in an encounter, and the number that should be used against the party level to determine whether its appropriate.

CR is only ever equal to EL if there is a single creature and neither side has any big advantages (time to prepare, starts on high ground, that sort of thing).

The Pathfinder rules have eliminated the term "EL" (except for one place in the trap rules that I suspect is a typo); they only use the term "CR" now.

So how about a Mama Bulette and 3 babies.

This is true, and I greatly prefer it. The new method for calculating experience makes me happy.

Ha ha... No I mean 3 baby bulettes.

Heh, I just did that with my PbP game, but swap Bulette for Scorpion.

Since they're only L2.
