2009 Iron Player (Pathfinder) Tournament Needs DMs (Gen Con 2009)

General Discussion (Prerelease)

The first Iron Dungeon Master Tournament was a huge success, and we are planning an even more successful event this time around. The Iron Player Tournament is a single game./day tournament. We are in need for 4 to 5 more Iron Dungeon caliber Dungeon Masters to help us run an event. We need Dungeon Masters that wow their normal gaming table every other week. That do more than just run a module out of a book every week. We need dungeon masters that have a unique style and thoroughly enjoy dungeon mastering. If you are interested, private message me or respond in this thread with an email address to contact u.

We will be using the pathfinder 3.5 system for this tourney. If you have only DM'd 3.5, don't fret, we'll have a cheat sheet on the differences between them, which are pretty minor from a DM perspective. Plus we allow every DM to run the table and adventure how they wish. The event will be THursday bertween 12 to 7:30

THE IRON PLAYER TOURNAMENT 2009 - WHAT WE DO DIFFERENT.

We break the mold of traditional tournaments by offering a full experience for the player. The idea was to combine all the good stuff about the tournaments that we liked, and diminish all of the negative stuff.

* The tournament judges the entire array of player skills Players will be judged by no less than 3 DMs as well, testing their ability to adapt to change in styles.
* Players play through the entire adventure, not just 1 or 2 encounters and then are eliminated.
* Our scoring system is not based on small objects that must be made, but on global comprehensive objectives. This gives players a real role playing experience as they have only their full toolset of creativity to accomplish things. More than just objectives, players are also judged on how they play the game. We have created a mixture of objective and subjective scoring for this event.
* Playing through a normal tournament is a minimum of 12 to 14 hours. Our tournament wraps up in 7 hours with everyone making it to the end and impacting the story in the same world.
* Players design their own character. No one gets screwed because they had the "bad" character sheet. Part of being a great role playing game player is building great and useful characters that transcends the stat sheets. Players also have time to write a brief background, which may/may not come into play. Because these are Iron caliber DMs, the adventure will be tweaked depending on your origin and team background.
* Encounters provide a balance of tactical challenging combat, brainteasing puzzles and multifaceted traps.
* The adventure is designed so that the PCs decisions impacts their experience in a non-linear fashion. Where as there is an "end goal" how you reach that goal will impact what that goal is and what happens during it. Every team also gets some type of closure on their adventure, so even the team that decided to wander around the grove all day, fighting Fey Devils would experience the end results of their actions.
* 3 different DMs judge the action. So their is a great minimization of being screwed by a bad DMs. You also get a different experience for each DM.

What's an "Iron GM" then? The thread seems to address the players' concerns.

Also, what do you mean by "pathfinder 3.5 system"?

Pathfinder RPG Alpha Test Rules?
Pathfinder RPG Beta Test Rules?
Pathfinder RPG? (due to be released the first day of GenCon)

Sorry, that should be Iron Player (not Iron DUngeon Master). The Iron Dungeon Master Tournament is where most of the DMs who do the Iron Player Tournament met and came up with the idea a couple years ago.

We will be using the pathfinder beta ruleset, though the Pathfinder RPG (which will be used at the con) will be useable.

We should finish a majority of the design work by March 1st, March 15th at the latest.

Sorry, that should be Iron Player (not Iron DUngeon Master). The Iron Dungeon Master Tournament is where most of the DMs who do the Iron Player Tournament met and came up with the idea a couple years ago. Nick Logue runs the Iron Dungeon Master Tournament. Most of the people involved are either previous years winners or have placed high in the last few years. WE hae also several great DMs on board who could probably win the thing if they entered at any time.

We will be using the pathfinder beta ruleset, though the Pathfinder RPG (which will be used at the con) will be useable. We will have a cheat sheet of Pathfinders most important rules for the DM to know, but we do nderstand that there are minor things that are just in a DM's style and want him to run a table as he/she wishes. What we didn't have, and don't want, last year is "judges" coming over to settle rules questions. We're cut from the stock that the DM runs his table as he wishes and its up to the an Iron Caliber Player to adjust.

We made sure to design a tourney where the DMs style isn't loss and becomes just as important as the adventure.
All of the DMs are well versed on Pathfinder Beta and, with luck, hope to get an early previous of the actual book. We're hoping to add Paizo to the list of sponsors we have for the event.

When we came up with this idea a couple years ago, it was because we were tired of hearing the horrible or mixed feelings people had at tournaments or con rpg games in general. Complaints we all have heard or experienced.

1 Their usually fairly linear, following some pregens story. It's always a straight line of where to go next, and that decision often feels like the DMs than the players. A con game needs to stay focused, but the PCs should still move the story along, not the other way around.
2 There's no story reason why so many groups are in one location, nor any interaction between the groups.
3 Scoring is either all subjective or all objective.
4. There's no real role playing, it plays like an MMO Raid.
5. Did I mention I hate my pregen
6. No true ending to the adventure for every person involved. Even if you complete the adventure, you may not get to know what happens next.
7. There seemed to be a lack of balance between combat, role playing, and puzzle solving.

We were lucking enough to develop a good story again this year that alieviates these major problems with con tournaments.

So is there a trade? Offering up time as a DM for free round trip flight and hotel room? Hmmm? ;>

Hahaha, i wish, this is purely for the love of the game. Though depending on how gencon structures badges this year I might have a raffle for 1 or 2 free DM badges.

Here's my planned trek:

I can pick people along the way, and might need hotel room buddies, if my local Pathfinder compatriots can't make the trip... :)

;) Thanks for the bump. Gencon hotel registration and badges went on sale this weekend. We plan on assembling prize packages for DMs who participate.
