As the novice with these rules, I'll follow whatever suggestions others might have, and fill gaps in the party.
Some super teams have a theme:
- young sidekicks of established heroes striking out on their own.
- an already-established family or group of friends who get their powers together.
- volunteers who survived an experimental military procedure.
- students at a hidden elite school.
Other teams don't. The Avengers, the Justice League of America, the Defenders. They're assemblies of characters with no real connection.
If it doesn't matter to anyone else, I'd like to form one of the first kind of teams. All aliens, all workers at a particular high-tech lab, all mystics, all retired military, or what-please-you.

Oh gods he is doing it...ugh so many games...must ....play.....M&M....................................................... ................
Hummm we could all be clairmount students Or ex goverment types kinda like a weapon x group...or we could be more JLA and just teaming up

Damnation, I missed the setup thread for this by about a day. Do you have room for one more player? I recently picked up some M&M stuff, and I've been wanting to try it out, but my usual haunts don't have any games actively recruiting. Then I remembered to check Paizo, and...saw this.
If you do accept me, be aware this'll be my first time trying M&M, though hardly my first RPG or PbP game, so I would appreciate any help I could get from players more familiar with the system in setting up my character. If you'll let me in, that is.

Gamemento Mori, I'll yield my spot to him if you like. I'm already running one PbP and playing in two others, so I wouldn't mind just watching this one.

Thanks, I owe you big time. Now...theme. I agree with Chris in that we should have some sort of common theme, but that leaves a very wide area to work with.
Personally, I favor a looser gathering like the JLA, Avengers, or Defenders, being brought together originally to face some single crisis, villain, or the like, and then sticking together afterward, because it provides a LOT more variety for character and power backgrounds.
But that's just me. If the rest of you guys want a strong common theme for the group, I'll go along.

My vote would be for more of a Freedom League type team, and I think that we are assuming the default style of M&M heroes, which lean more towards the Avengers, Fanatastic Four and Justice League than X-Force, Punisher and other Iron Age style heroes.
I'm reposting my character concept: I'm thinking of making a former A list Hollywood actor who made a lot bad career choices (ie ended up in a bunch of crappy movies). The character is now on the B list, and in a desperate attempt to garner more fame and attention the character as spent most of his personal fortune on various experimental treatments (maybe Astro labs) that have granted him super human powers, so that he could take on a new role as a super hero. Of course this ridiculous stunt has only given more fuel for the tabloids, which love to make fun of him. He has also discovered that being a super hero is much harder than he thought. His agent is also a real piece of work. I see him as bit like Wonderman or a little like Tony Stark. I think his name will be Tom Pitt, but I'm not sure about his hero name yet. I think it will be something kind of lame, which the tabloids will make fun of, and his agent will always be telling him to change for PR purposes, but he really likes it.
I haven't thought much about powers, but given the nature of the character they would probably be pretty traditional, and might combine some gadgets.
I see this hero, as having only been a super hero for a couple of years. His identity is totally public, but since he has no close family (beyond various ex-wives and such, he doesn't really care, and he hasn't thought all that much about the pit falls off a public identity). I figure he probably tried out for the Freedom League, but got rejected (maybe they didn't take him seriously)
I could see him as a guy that might have decided to found his own team of superheroes. He potentially has the money to set up a base of operations for a team (though he's not great with money and is over extending himself- but the rest of the team doesn't need to know). He maintains a home in LA, but his main residence is now Freedom City.

Humm what if we came together after the Terminus invasion. Alot of the city's heroes didn't make it though that
I have 2 ideals
1 more of a wolverine/pugilist type a brawler
2 the strong man type..super str, protection, super speed and the like
On the fence as to which one I would like to do so feed back be nice, but it will be one of the 2

Typical phone conversation between Tom and his agent Marv. The conversation only depicts Tom's side...
Hey Marv, what's up?
Uh huh
What? You're f!#~ing kidding me. She's really filing a lawsuit?
That's bullshit. Yeah I know what happened at the party. Yeah I know the comments I made about her ass might have been a bit inappropriate, but she didn't have to make such a big deal about them. It was her own fault for slapping me. I can't help it if her hand broke on my super tough skin.
F+!#. What a b$~~@. So you're going to call Blake? He's good at dealing with this kind of thing. He got me a good deal on my last divorce settlement. Maybe we could take it on Judge Judy.
Okay sounds good.
Oh you're not going to bring that up again are you? I'm happy with Captain Invincible.
No, I don't care if the PR people say that "Captain" is out. I like Captain. No I'm not going to change it to straight Invincible. Who do you think I am MC Hammer or Prince? Look Marv, it's Captain Invincible. I'm sticking with it.
Yeah, I know the tabloids make fun of the name. They're going to make fun of me no matter what I do, so it doesn't really matter does it? But you know what they say, negative attention is better than no attention.
That reminds me, did you get me Paris Hilton's number? I still don't have a date for next Saturday.
Huh?
No. Why would I go out patrolling on a Saturday night?
Well. Uh, yeah. Well, I know there tends to be more crime on Saturday nights.
Ah shut up Marv. Look I've got shit to do. Call me when you get Paris's number.

*mutters something about four-color games and then goes about revising character conception*
So, murder is out but villigante is in. I am sure a super punch is about as deadly as a sword-slash so if I just leave the villians short of dead would that be acceptable? Maybe allowing Identity A (See Normal Person) have alittle more control over Identity B (See Samurai Badass) kinda in the way Bruce Banner can sometimes has alittle control over the Hulk. That way I don't have to alter the concept to much and I can keep said concept from "killing" defeated villians... Identity A is afraid of death/killing and it is so strong that it doesn't allow Identity B to make the killing strike. Or something like that... Just musing my ideas right now.

So we've got an electricity controller, a flying brick, and a mystic meleeist coming together here?
Hm. Sounds like we need a Smart Guy, maybe someone else with some flight, and/or possibly a mentalist of some variety.
I'm not liking my attempts to put a mystic together... the concept isn't gelling well. I might try one of my other ideas, one I had awhile back but never played. It's an android speedster named Gold Rush...

well the mod was set in 2002 unless he changes that. We could have meet then and came together much later.
Humm this is a bit of messing \with the GM's domain but.
In the 1e M&m core book there is an adventurer where the freedom league go bad. Be it clone or robots or alternate selves is up to the GM. One outcome is leaving the FL dead or missing.
If the GM ok's it and we want to go that route maybe we moved in to take over from the missing FL. Seeing a vacuum and a need maybe our group steeped up to fill in while the FL is missing.
whats the thoughts on this?

I would rather be something other than the Freedom League, but I'm not going to complain if the FL aren't around. I'd be okay without it too, though.

I do not mean we are the FL, but if they go missing someone needs to step up. This is before the light house before they became world spanning.
Its like this i see they are gone..crime rises a bit as there old foes come out of the woodwork with no FL around.
Maybe we team up then form a new group to replace the missing one..

ok guys fast rough history
Mark wellens was born in freedom city. While always a gifted child his grads where never great as he often fantasized about being a hero. His daydreams kept him locked in his own fantasy till his powers manifested at 14. Finally his dream had come true, he would protect the city like his hero the centurion. Unfortunately for him his powers where not , well powerful. He could control friction to a limited degree , sticking people to the ground with some secures and skating along at good speeds.
So mark with only the gusto a 14 year old cold do donned a homemade custom and went to clear the streets of crime.
It went well for a few weeks, stopping bulys and bag snatchers. It wouldn't till he had a run in within a locale gang that mark had his wake up call. Beaten, shot and left for dead mark spent weeks in the hospital and months in recovery. His dreams of heroes died in that alleyway.
After that he stuck his nose in the books, gone was any thought of his meager powers being anything . He worked hard got his grades up. Then came the Invasion. Mark helped the best he could running massages trying to hold down the drones. Often his efforts were not good enough, but in the end Omega was defeated and his child idol died that day.
That death is what has fueled him. It drove his mind he gained jobs at tech firms and weapons division. In 1998 at the age of 23 he formed his own small company Wallens Technology. In the 4 years since it has become a leader in Cutting edge armor and communications technology.
Mark has used his resources to built devices to increasing his own power and when The Freedom league went missing he knew someone had to step up. His hero had given his all for the people could he do any less?

I realized my confusion - I was getting Time of Crisis 2.0 mixed up with Time of Vengeance. I must confess, I own and have read ToC (though not the 2nd Ed version), but I guarantee I won't break the mod with OOC knowledge. Actually, come to that, other than some really ludicrous stuff I could theoretically pull right at the beginning, I'm not even sure how I could break it...

Characters are looking good
I'm not going to kill off the FL
Those of you who have been around for awhile might have worked as associates to the FL(Pulse, Gold Rush) after the terminus invasion
And if you wish, you can be an established Team in Freedom City, rather than upstarts, it isnt a huge deal, as i can get heroes involved either way .

Well, I've got an idea for a character. I still haven't read enough of the Mutants & Masterminds rules to see how likely it is to build.
The character began life as Darius Fornell, a natural athlete in high school and an excellent lieutennant in the US Air Force, with expertise in military hardware, especially communication systems. Darius was serving as navigator on the X-95, a craft with an experimental "stealth" mode. On its initial run, the plane "cloaked", and vanished, phasing out of normal space. When it returned 30 seconds later, it was pitted and rusted. Only Darius survived, and he'd aged some 20 years. He was honorably discharged with full retirement bonuses, six months later.
In the subsequent year, Darius has developed a suite of mental powers: clairvoyance, telekinesis (including through the clairvoyance, but strength fluctuates wildly), and the ability to create an illusion of himself.
He calls himself Probe. He still maintains military contacts, where his heroic identity is an open secret.

I really liked the typo you have about running massages. I can just see your hero trying to run around and give other heroes massages while they are trying to fight off an invasion.

The basics - clairvoyance, teke, illusions - are not an issue at all. What sort of "fluctuates wildly" are you thinking about for the teke-via-clair stuff?

I'm gong with a Device using character, specifically a pair of bracers. Main power will be Cosmic Energy Control, alternate powers I have in mind are Flight, Force Field, Disintegration, Immunity for life support, and maybe Space Travel and Sensory Shield. Won't need blast, because it's my understanding that the capability is included automatically under Cosmic Energy Control. Any advice on other powers to pick up or dorp would be appreciated.
The concept I'm going for is sort of a Captain Marvel meets Green Lantern sort of thing. Still hashing out the bio, but the gist of it is that he's a down on his luck private eye who woke up one morning with the bracers in his lap and instructions on how to use them shoved in his head, along with a mental welcome to the "Reality Wardens" and instructions to use the bracers to maintain order until called upon to discharge his real duties...which weren't elaborated on.
Though honestly, considering the similarity, stat-wise I might just go with the Ring Bearer Archetype from Instant Superheroes instead, since it fits pretty closely to what I want, and is pre-made. If I do so, I'll still likely tweak the powers a bit, drop the object creation for something else, at least, possibly Snare and Telekinesis as well, in exchanged for at least Space Travel. If someone would be willing to help with this, I'd be in their debt. Or, as a final option, I can just use it right out of the box.

Another conversation between Tom and Marv (Tom's side only)
Hey Marv. What's up?
No, I haven't been out patrolling this week.
What's the big deal. I had things to do. What, is there some kind of quota I'm required to fill or something? I mean it's not like I actually get money for being a superhero. Well, at least none other than the royalties and endorsement cheques I get.
Let's see... Hmmm... Oh yeah! I helped the cops bust up that crackhouse last month. And I moved that jack knifed transport truck the other day. I think that actually earned me more points with the public than the crack house. Do you have any idea how far back the traffic jam went?
Yeah, I know I haven't fought a true super villain in about a year, and there's a reason for that.
Hey Marv, you're starting to piss me off. You know it really hurts to be blasted with plasma rays and cosmic radiation, and all the other crap you have to deal with when you fight super villains. I was laid up for almost a week after that last fight. I mean how could I be expected to take on Larceny Inc. all by myself.
I know I flew away. But Smash threw a bus at me. It really hurt. You saw the Youtube video.
Well of course it would have gone better if the rest of the team had been there. Listen Marv, you're really getting on my nerves today, and I've got to get ready for that date with Paris Hilton.
What?
F!!+ you. Eat my super shit.
Yeah, well at least I don't wear a cape.
Oh, come on that doesn't count. That was one time, on a dare, and it was worth it. Lady Liberty showed me her tits afterwards.
Yeah, they are really nice. Too bad she won't date me.
No, I haven't given up on her yet.
P.H. Dungeon
Your character looks good. I enjoyed reading the background. I'm all with our team coming together during the Terminus invasion. Based on the characters in the team, I kind of see that each team member might have a solo career of sorts, and that the team gets together semi-regularly to keep each other up to speed on how things are going in their lives, and to fight greater threats than what they can handle on their own (though Captain Invincible tends to try to avoid "greater threats"). It sounds Tom and Pulse are the two wealthiest team members, and would provide the financial backing for the group. However, Tom's the guy who tends to overspend, and has plenty of debt.
I've updated my stats. I think my character is basically done. Though I may still tweak him a little over the next couple of days.
Added background as well.
A note on the idea of the group coming together after the Terminus Invasion - at this point, that was 16 years ago. If we've been together that long, I'm not sure we qualify as "upstart" or "up and coming" anymore, you know?
genkumon
Yeah, for simplicity's sake, I'm just gonna go ahead and use the default Ring Bearer stats from Instant Superheroes, if that's ok. The only alteration I'll make is to change the ring to a pair of bracers, which won't function unless I have both, so there shouldn't be any cost changes. Also, I figure I'll want him to still be fairly new, having been a hero for a bit under a year, making him the newest member of the team, if possible.
----------
Terrance "Terry" Howard was...unlucky, is the word he would use. All his life, he had wanted to be a police officer like his father, and to that end had studied Criminal Justice. But, shortly before he graduated, his father was killed in the line of duty, and the whole incident surrounding the death was blamed on the dead officer. Terry, however, was sure it was a cover-up, but he couldn't prove it. Disillusioned with the police force, he went into private investigation instead.
His luck there was no better. In a city full of super powered heroes and villains, an old fashioned PI wasn't in high demand. He made enough to eat and pay most of his bills, but that was it. For three years, life went on, until...something happened.
Terrance woke up one morning to a pounding headache, and a strange pair of gold and red bracers in his lap. Looking blankly at them, he suddenly realized he knew how to use them...and that someone had left a message for him *inside* his head. It was a short message, sounding as if it were spoken by a deep voiced male.
"Terrance Howard, you have been chosen to join the Reality Wardens. You are charged with the protection of your local bubble of space-time. You are to use your Warp Bracers to maintain local order until such a time as you are called to discharge your prime duty. Misuse of your equipment will result in termination."
For a whole day, Terry simply stayed in bed, pondering. He didn't really want this, he didn't choose this...who were these Reality Wardens, and what right did they have to force him into this? But, slowly, he began to consider the possibilities. His whole life, he had wanted to make a difference in this city, and now...now he had the power to do so. Not to mention with the might of the Warp Bracers, he may someday be able to uncover the truth behind the death and cover-up of his father.
That night, the city's newest hero, the Warden, was born. This black and red-suited hero, held aloft by the golden aura of energy coming from the red and gold bracers on his wrists proved to be a mighty force for good, and although that was less than a year ago, he's already becoming fairly well known, and rumor has it he's recently joined a team.
Gamemento Mori
I'm good with everything except the Name, genkumon
Warden is an established vilian in the Freedom City universe, so yea.
I believe i'll get a game thread up soon, so those of you with finished characters can interact while we wait on the rest of the team to finish up, also, might i remind you all that there is a need to come up with a team name.
