From the Lankmar novels it can be inferred that Sheelba is either male or female

I always thought of her as female since she runs around in hut with chicken legs, so I linked her with Baba Yaga.

She was referred to as female several times, but honestly, it may be that it doesn't really apply to something like Sheelba. That having been said, given the similarity of the Hut's appearance, and the fact that the Lieber books showed crossover between Newhon and Earth, and that Ningauble's cave opened up all over the Multiverse, I'd say it wasn't too much of a stretch to picture Sheelba as Baba Yaga.

Then again, maybe she just saw the Hut and had to have one of her own.

There's a very early dragon magazine adventure featuring baba yaga's hut, either in the 50's or 70's...I dont remember which one that was very good.

If you look at first few posts in this thread, you'll see it was Dragon #83.

Hi Watcher.

Thanks for your interest (and thanks also to everyone who chimed in over the period of months that this little thread of mine has "survived" and "thrived") and I really do hope, one day, to make a go of a Linnorm Kings vs. Irrisen Witches AP (homebrew or having a part of an official Paizo product.)

Perhaps I'll post my thoughts/outline for the six parts someday (likely after the holiday madness.)

Cheers.

For some quite good Baba Yaga reference points, look to the Hellboy comics. Mike Mignola has a great fondness for folklore of all types and heavily leans on it for his story arcs. Needless to say she shows up more than a few times, most notably as Rasputin's matron.

Ryn, who reads too much pulp horror comics...

These threads will not go away, but will keep circling around same good stuff until Jacobs gives in to our un- I mean, reasonable demands!!!

Rynthief, loved that story in Hellboy. (In a bit, Heathy will show up and I'll forget the name of the Malaysian vampire and he'll remind me and then the cycle will start again.)

The Baba Yaga shows up a lot, even sending Hellboy to her demi-plane of Russian folklore as punnishment for his taking her eye. There he is hunted by Koshchei, a Russian warrior given immortality by a dragon who may have served as a basis for one of the open content demon lords. And we all know how James loves his demon lords!

Also, Baba Yaga is one of the principal antagonists in "Fables" at the moment. If you're not reading Fables and you like fantasy comics, then you should be. Bill Willingham is a genius.

Ryn, who knows that when a winter wolf is the GOOD guy, you're in trouble...

Ryn,
Where should I look in Fables? I've heard of it, but only looked at it a little.
Thanks!

She first showed up around the fifth or so graphic novel, I think, but is playing a larger role more recently.

I still think Frau Totenkinder kicks ass though. :P

I never before heard of Fables, but googling around a bit showed me that there even is a german translation for a really low price (15 Euro for the first 5 issues together, at a page count of 132 is cheap for a cool comic.) I guess I have to look for a decent comic shop sometime soon.

Frau Totenkinder for President!

Ryn, who knows that it is not good to cross powerful witches...

Liberty's Edge

My Introduction to Baba Yaga was actually though Quest for Glory 4, in which the Hero is transported to the 'Gothic' land of Mordavia. Baba Yaga and her Hut play a role in that game. I had also almost forgot she appears in Quest for Glory 1, although I didnt really pick up on that fact it was her until years later.

She was always a peripheral character in those games and not a cold killer (well there were a adventure/rpg with comedy toned series)

The Rusalka, another creation of slavic /russian myth also made an appearance.

As for the Golarion version, she is about due another visit.. so that will mean interesting things for both the current ruler and the people of Irrisen.
