[Skills] - Stealth: please clarify when you become "visible"

Skills and Feats

I noticed that it's now impossible to hide while running/attacking/charging, so that's one of my pet peeves addressed (why snipe when you can hide while attacking for the same -20 penalty?).

But I hope you will clarify exactly when a stealthy character is detected while attacking. There are two schools of thought:

  • If you attack while sneaking, you're only detected after your attack hits. Thus you can catch opponents without their Dex bonus in combat.
  • If you attack while sneaking, you're detected even before your attack hits. This limits the usefulness of hiding after combat has begun, since you will never be catching opponents without their Dex bonus. Stealth is only useful for gaining a surprise round on your opponents.

I believe that the first interpretation is correct, but I've seen a big debate over this issue and I hope it can be cleared up.
