Grey Maiden

Curse of the Crimson Throne

Hello,
I wish to know one thing about the grey maiden (I suppose that there is a post somewhere which dealt with that point concerning the localization of their entrainment, origins and so on...) but I wish to know one thing:
- in "escape from Old Korvosa" it is written that there's some patrols of grey maiden in the streets, controlling everything, but how much Grey maiden are in Korvosa? Because I don't want to tell to my PC that there are only 10 grey maidens in streets if they are 100. You know what I want to mean :-)

It is fairly clear that while initially there are only a squad or so's worth, that number climbs into the many hundreds very quickly. At the time the players should be extricating Orisini and the seneschal-dude from the bowels of Arkonas Palace, you could easily have a couple thousand of them overrun the place hot on the characters' heels...

I don't think the adventures give any firm number. Thousands or even hundreds strains credibility in my mind (where did the Queen find thousands of able-bodied female fighters?).

IMC, the Queen started with only Sabina. Using Kazovan, she converted over a handful in the castle guards. Sabina then recruited the female students of Orsini for conversion. By the time we get to Trinia's execution in EoA, the PCs have seen a dozen or so of them.

Next, the Queen starts taking women from the Guard and from the Sable Company. Croft and Endren start complaining of this in Seven Days.

By the time we reach the blockade in Escape, I'll have a hundred or so Grey Maidens and the PCs will have seen that force accumulate.

On the other hand (having done some more reading), a hundred Grey Maidens aren't going to be able to enforce martial law as described at the end of Escape from Old Korvosa.

I still can't envision thousands of Grey Maidens for some reason. I think the Maidens will be the elite guards. Remnants of the Sable Company and Korvosa guard will be the bulk of forces.

We don't say how many gray maidens there are, because that implies that the GM has to track how many the PCs kill against how many are in reserve. Basically, there should be enough gray maidens out there that the PCs shouldn't feel that killing them one-by-one is a viable tactic.

They first appear in the 2nd adventure, and by the 3rd adventure, I suspect there's several hundred at least. By the time the 6th adventure comes around, there's probably close to a thousand. But again, those are guesses. Keep in mind that we don't know how long any one particular group will take to finish Curse of the Crimson Throne. If your group blazes through the entire campaign in about a month of game time, there might not be that many gray maidens after all, but if your group takes months to finish a single adventure, there might be a lot!

Thanks a lot James. You're right, one more time :-)

That was just that i don't want to make them appear from my hat, like a wizard :-)
Now I know that between the 2 and the 3rd adventure, I'm going to make spend some weeeks (2 perhaps), so since the death of the King, it will make near 2 months so...
Thanks a lot!!!!!!

To make the presence of the Grey Maidens more plausible I actually introduced them in the first adventure. Basically the Queen had already wanted an all female body guard as a prestige symbol before she met you know who. She was recruiting and training them outside the city, at a special school. There was a lot of secrecy around the school and the PC's had only heard some rumors.
When she merged the idea changed of the real function of the maidens as well as how many there should be. She started really recruiting as well as using Sabina to recruit. By the time the riots happened she already had almost 100 Grey Maidens, with more trainees in the wind. They actually helped secure the keep and started working with the guards on quelling the riots. By the time escape and later is happening it will be very plausible that there are hundreds of them in my campaign.
