- Skills: Concentration is gone and its role got shifted to Spellcraft, which has been pointed out as unfair to some classes that do not invest in a high Int. One compromise that is being considered is shifting the entire raft of uses over to a Will save, removing it from the skill system entirely. Thoughts?
I would be for Jason's suggestion or removing "concentration" checks as skill checks and make them into saving throws. If Concentration as a skill is to be out, its pertinence kind of lost of its meaning.
With the exception of casting on the defensive , Concentration checks always were reactive checks (as opposed to proactive skill checks) Few situation called for the character to purposefully concentrate on something, its was made as a reaction to an external situation/disturbance. This sits well with the saving throw concept.
Even the check for Casting on the Defensive may be interpreted as reactive, as the spellcaster willingly put himself/herself in a situation of "violent motion" and must therefore succeed a Concentration check to keep its focus on the spell. Since the failure to succeed such a test resulted in the loss of the prepared spell/spell slot anyway, interpreting the concentration check happening after the spell is cast does not bring any new consequences. It may very well have been meant this way as RAW.
However, I could think of certain situation were the saving throw would be based on Fortitude instead of will. A player could even have the choice of either one or the other, or if this is too permissive, create a feat that substitute Will "concentration" saves with Fortitude. This could be good for fighters and spellcasters with a poor will save (yes ranger and paladin, I'm looking at you...)
my thoughts on the subject...
