Does Pathfinder Require the 3.5. Core Books?

I like what I see in PF and as I no longer have the 3.5. Core books was wondering if they are required to get the most out of PF?

I don't believe so. PF RPG is supposed to be a complete rulebook. However, it's based on the SRD more than the core books because, as far as i remember, legally they're not allowed because of licenses and all that.

If you are talking about the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, then I don't think you need the core books at all, yet, as mentioned above, the SRD would be very helpful.

However, if you are talking about the Pathfinder Adventure Paths, then yes. The core books would be necessary as they are essentially linked adventures. You could get by with the SRD, but it doesn't include rules on character creation or advancing levels.

Liberty's Edge

I was talking about the PF roleplaying game. Not the adventure paths. I'm assuming that since there will be a PF Players Handbook and Monster Manual that they will release a PF Dungeon Master equivalent also. I really hope I don't have to reinvest in a 3.5. DMG as imo that would make it almost sure I would no longer buy anymore PF products. It also makes no logical business sense imo.

When the PFRPG final version is published in August of next year, you will not need any of the D&D 3.5 core books to play the game. Pathfinder will be a completely self-contained game, based on the SRD and published under the OGL.

In my opinion, you don't even need the core books for the Beta rules, with the exception of the Monster Manual...and resources like The Hypertext d20 SRD Site can even eliminate the need for that book.

Magic item creation rules are incomplete right now. I'm not sure if there is anything else missing or not, I haven't done an exhaustive search.

That's incorrect. The PF RPG rulebook will essentially be a combo of the DMG and PHB. So the only 'core' pathfinder books will be the PFRPG rulebook and the PF Bestiary.

When the game is finished in August 2009, it won't require the 3.5 core books; that's the primary reason we're doing this, in fact, since those books are now out of print and we need to have the rules IN print.

For now, the Beta is a mostly complete game. It's missing some elements (such as intelligent magic items, item creation, cursed items, and a few more things), but those missing elements are being covered by additional web enhancements/releases, as the playtest moves on.

I want to thank James Jacobs and everyone else who responded to my question. I asked mainly because while I like 4E more than 3.5. I do like what Paizo has done with PF too. I can't see why I can't enjoy both. It makes me glad that I don't have to purchase any of the 3.5 core books. I rather spend money on a newer product. It also makes sense from a business point of view. While you want to keep it compaitable with 3.5. you also want it to stand out too.
