I'd like you to either use IC or roll for yourself. This goes for all rolling with me as a DM, actually. IC is more honest, and I even use it for npcs' actions. However, if you want to roll dice at home, that's fine too.
I trust my players to not 'cheat', because 'cheating' at pretending is pretty much the lamest thing I can imagine. I'll leave your consciences to that one.
In terms of specifics, take the standard Max HP at first level. Then, roll for your hit points. Add your Constitution modifier to each level. Every time you take a level in your 'favoured class', you may choose either an extra skill point, or an extra hit point. Add that, if necessary, and there you go!

OOC: oh I like that one much better...even though my dice just screwed me...figures when I figured out how to roll 4d8 together I got 17 heh...oh well I can heal..
OK I'll be making some changes to my character tonight as far as wands go, but other than that, I'm good to go.

Personally, I like it when the DM rolls; then I can blame all of my bad luck on someone else. :-)
Likewise.
Shoot, now I have to go shopping. But it will be worth it. Also must check, I may have to do something with the favored class points. Ahhh!
Hey, I can't remember, the favored class points do you pick hit point or skill at each level, or at first and that's what you get for all time? Can't stay up tonight, I'll try to do it in the morning, tomorrow night at latest.
Oh, and thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you.

DM dahn |

She's got two of those!
We're going to start the game in Olfden, actually. In The Weeping Willow, a local tavern, the conversation that you were all exploring in the gamer connection thread has been taking place. Short of causing a raucus that would tear the place down, the proprietor has asked you all to leave. A little bitter, you retire to your room, wander around the town, find a different inn, or whatever suits your fancy. Either way, you disperse.
But your presence in this town has certainly drawn some attention. Stories of your recent adventures are milling around, and you are riding the small wave of your 15 minutes of fame.
At this point, separately, you have all become in receipt of a small letter, tied with a yellow ribbon and sealed with a simple pin, delivered by a small boy. The letter plainly commends you for your skills and bravery in recent adventures, and continues "...and I could really use an individual of your calibre. You may or may not be aware of current political and military machinations near the Chelaxian border, but things are getting quite tense there. Which is why I need someone, like you, who may be able to assist in eliminating some of the tension. I have a job for you. It pays quite well, and you will be doing the nation of Andoran, a nation of Free Peoples, a great service. If you would like to know more, please meet me at midnight at the gated-edge of town. We can discuss everything there. Signed General D."
I'm making the gameplay thread now. That is really all the background that your character needs. If you're from the area, feel free to know more about the Andoran/Chelaxian struggles, but your contact (if you decide to meet with them) can explain everything you need to know.

That's fair, but you have obviously gathered some prestige or attention. You're reasonably powerful people, with a fair number of flashy magical items. There's a reason you made it to level 5!
I'm just coming into this, right? I'm trying to make a smooth transition into the game world. Glossing over a few things seems to help.

Andrea Greenholt |

True but Andreas magical talents as you may have noticed are all about enhancing her skills in her(unwillingly) chosen career and her magical items were..payment for services rendered,,which is probably why she came to the generals notice in the first place...however it seems Calistria has marked her down for some more interesting work

Andrea Greenholt |

Well for an infiltration esppionage mission she's perfect...and whats more she can be totally discreet when she needs to be
She's designed for a game with more social encounters than normal which I suspect this is going to be but has a number of spells which are still useful in combat situations..like cure light wounds and charm person.

Jon Anthoni |

Sorry I'm a little behind.
I went shopping for Jon last night. Had it laid out in an excel spreadsheet, costs, weights, etc. Lost it all somehow. I've recreated the big items from memory. If anyone has suggestions for gear please make them.
Still have to figure out favored class hit point or skill.

![]() |

No worries, I'm behind as well.
You can represent your equipment any way you'd like. Pae has an interesting origin for most of his gear as gifts from friends. You can think of something equally creative or not, but either way, don't think that you have to choose within the confines of what is available for purchase in Olfden or Piren's Bluff.

DM Dahn, I'm going to put the favored class bonus into skills -- a little animal care, healing and survival. It's going to leave me a little short on hit points, but oh well. Just trying to make Jon the complete professional soldier.
For gear I bought Jon a lot of +1 stuff. Does anyone have other ideas? Especially for speed improvement. He's in a chain shirt right now because I hate slow movement. Even a 2 handed weapon weilder needs to get to the engagement.
Also, he'll have a lot of mundane gear, including maybe a heavier suit of armor. That's what the mule is for, carrying stuff. (I dread recreating his original shopping list.)
Otherwise, great early posts everyone. I think this will be a great group.

Jon Anthoni |

Almost ready. Finished buying with my original cash. Is the +1 mithril shirt ok?
Jon will turn some of the new cash into gems. Except would still like to buy 5 yellow surcoats, 4 medium. 1 small if possible. And maybe a few Masterwork weapons, handaxe, dagger, mace. Could also use a couple more potions, strength and haste come to mind. Possible?
I'd like Jon to have top-notch livestock. Spent 400 on the horse, 75 on the mule. 100 on their rigging. The last Pathfinder had some premium horseflesh. Could we use that as a basis for discussion?
I still need to check how his combat bonuses fit together. All the to hit and damage bonuses. But at least the weapons are statted. Skills are done; HP done.

![]() |

I would be fine with all of those, Jon.
I will say (for all of you), that you can fiddle with your equipment and gear as much as you'd like until we get to Piren's Bluff, at which point they would be considered 'locked down'. Between early morning shopping in Olfden, and trading with Gasker on the way, you can pick up what you need.
Is that fair?
Also, I have to go to class in another city right now. I should be back late tonight, to update, sorry!

Paellat Silvertongue wrote:OOC:NICE! That's an excellent write-up Jon, you an author in disguise? Thanks. Not an author. When I have time I like to try to stretch my posts. It's one nice thing about PbP, adds to the game without bogging things down.
There are some seriously good writers on the boards here. People who can make up amazing little details and describe them beautifully. Or just present an unusual viewpoint. Like Gulgiak's wives. Doubt I would have thought up using them that way. My characters are usually the stereotypical guy on his own. He's usually got family, but its somewhere else.
I liked your idea of them being his followers. Funny, and very creative. First wife as cohort. There's a wealth of material there.
EDIT: Thanks, Dahn.

Yes I'm enjoying this, the group dynamic is ..interesting.
But if Gul thinks he's going to get away with treating Andrea like one of his wives he might end up spending an evening thinking he's a dog.Are Kellids wary of their wise women, I wonder, because that is effectively what the witch variant class is

I chuckled a bit. You have yet to approach Rose about it, but she's certainly interested insofar as it doesn't rub the wrong way against the Andoran army that will be waiting outside the place.
also, just a note about this preliminary stuff; i usually run all my games through what i call an 'intro' session. You can see them for my SD and eberron game; it gives me a chance not only to see your style of play in action, but also shows me a bit (certainly in this circumstance) about character relations and tactics. There are other things, sure, but I think this was a fun little exercise before 'the real game' begins.
I think you've grown a bit together even just over the course of this one encounter. It's something that wouldn't have happened if i had simply said 'you travel to piren's bluff. go.'
y'know?
Or, was it tedious and deadly?

It was way better than 'you travel to piren's bluff. go.' The bridge trap was pretty unique.
Twisting the adventure. Trying Jon's plan will be way tougher than just wacking the baron and calling in the cavalry. We'll have to get key underlings to trust us even though we just wacked their boss. We'll have to convince the General he can trust us, even though he might think we welshed on the deal. (read Jon's last words to him carefully,)

![]() |

I like a more detailed lead in..the Andrea/Jon dynamic just sort of happened..she doesnt feel any romantic attatchment to him as yet but he's been kind to her, something most men haven't over the last couple of years, so she sees him as a protector..plus the thought of being lady of the manor would be enticing to any girl in her situation.

therealthom |

I was pretty determined to make Jon a good guy. He's got kind of a crabby side, too, but I haven't had a chance to bring that out. He definitely wants to make friends with this group, because it could net him, and them all a pretty nice prize in the castle. I (Tom) thnk chances of success are small. We'll probably have to work too fast getting rid of the baron and company to build the kind of relationships with the average troops we'd need to be successful. But that won't stop Jon from trying. Nevermind that his mercenery troop fell apart. That was Golden George's fault, mostly.
