As the party slowly advances through the swamp, long vines suddenly lash out from the island to the south, entangling Fargrim and Barshevy (but missing Rin) and beginning to constrict. No immediate damage, restrained and 10 ongoing, save ends both Fargrim and Rin can now make out a vaguely humanoid creature hidden among the black vines, with tentacle-like vines reaching out as much as 25 feet.
RESTRAINED
- You grant combat advantage.
- You’re immobilized.
- You can’t be forced to move by a pull, a push, or a
slide.
- You take a –2 penalty to attack rolls.

Rin draws in his breath and raises his orb high over his head. "Back into the swamp, don't come any nearer!"
Eldritch light bursts from his orb, defying the vine horror to move closer. The mage sidles cautiously backwards, extracting his trusty rope. "I never thought I'd be so glad to have piece of string with me." he mutters, preparing to drop it for Barshevy and Fargrim to grab on to.
Dire Radiance. 1d20+4=15 v Will. If it hits, 1d6+2=7 damage and if it moves closer to Rin, it takes a further 1d6+2 damage. Shift to K8.

Is this considered the start of the encounter ? (Does Lafiel get First Strike ?). Also, if I delay, do I lose my turn in the initiative order for the rest of the encounter ?
It got surprise, so no first strike. Yes, if you delay (or ready), it shifts your place in the sequence for the duration. Also, note that it has concealment from people without lowlight (Fargrim, Rin).
Lafiel Abriel
Lafiel looks at the vine horror for a moment, then throws a shuriken at it and begins to advance, trying to flank it.
Mark horror, Deft Strike (Move to K9), Move to J15Deft Strike vs AC (1d20+8=23, 1d6+4=10)

Figured I'd post because I may not be able to tomorrow. Hopefully, this won't need changing.
Drivish gets a running start and leaps across the stagnant swamp water, landing on the island with the creature. Closing the distance he readies his halberd and takes a swing.
Running start (H5, H6), leap to H11, finish double move at I12.
Athletics to jump = 28
Minor action: draw weapon. Spend action point to use Reaping Strike, marking the creature.
Att = 14 vs. AC; Damage = 8 or 4 on a miss.

Qadim-sul, realizing he is too far away from the fight to help his allies, windwalks to the island with the vine horror and unleashes his booming blade, bringing a thunderclap down on the thing (9hp), at the same time marking the plant creature with his aegis.
The vine horror reacts by clawing the genasi, scoring a deep wound -9hp
Drivish, meanwhile, leaps the gap most impressively, but is unable to connect solidly, but the flurry of blows damages the creature still.
Drivish, do you want your mark to override Qadim-sul's?
Barshevy, Fargrim. You both take 10 constriction damage at the beginning of the round and are restrained. Your turns.
Barshevy
Free Action : Channel Divinity: Divine Fortune
I gain +1 to my next saving throw.
Standard Action: Cause Fear
Targeting the vine horror.
Wisdom vs. Will +1 (+3 from wisdom, -2 from being constrained)
My attack value is 17 (1d20+1=17)
If I may roll a saving throw for the next turn (+1 human perseverance feat, +1 channel divinity)
My saving throw is 19 (1d20+2=19)

The vine horror recoils in terror from Barshevy's power and flees further into the swamp, releasing its victims. Qadim-sul and Drivish both take advantage of its panic to make attacks, and Drivish hits, bloodying it.
Nice one! You don't have to burn your Channel Divinity, as you could have waited until after your standard action got you released. Barshevy still took damage at the beginning of the round, but Fargrim does not.
Fargrim's up, then Rin

Drivish, do you want your mark to override Qadim-sul's?
As long as QS isn't actually here, then I'd prefer to override his mark. Actually, until he knows the party better, anytime Drivish has a chance to, he'd probably override the others' marks.
Did you remember that an enemy hit by my OA stops moving and has to use another action to continue?

Cool re Q-S. Re the mark, the horror wasn't moving of its own volition, it wasn't a move action. I interpreted the panicked flight as overriding the combat superiority, though as I reread, I think you do stop it. Map corrected.
I'm ruling that it still let go preparatory to running.| Lafiel Abriel |
Athletic Checks (Jump, Swim) (1d20+7=18, 1d20+7=25)
Running start till K9, jump to K13, move to J14
Fargrim
How difficult would it be for me to move to H12?
If I can get there in 1 move:
Attack the Vine Horror
Covering Attack (1d20+7=14, 2d10+4=22)
If it hits, Drivish may shift 2 squares, and the Vine Horror is marked by me
If not, i'll double move to as close as i can get to H12
Lafiel Abriel
Lafiel flanks the horror and manages to get a good strike at it.
Shift to I14, Positioning Strike with combat advantage vs. Will, 19 damage.
Positioning Strike, Damage, Sneak Attack, Hunter's Quarry (1d20+11=15, 1d4+4=8, 2d8=5, 1d6=6)
If Lafiel slides the horror toward Rin, will the horror take damage from the Dire Radiance ? If so, Lafiel will slide it using positioning strike's effect.

How difficult would it be for me to move to H12?
If I can get there in 1 move:** spoiler omitted **
If not, i'll double move to as close as i can get to H12
It takes one move (and an Athletics check which you make on a 1) to move half your speed through the water, so two squares. So the second move can get you there.
Rin Lyulfsson
Rin looks up. "Sorry - were you all waiting for me to stop messing about with dead vines? Let's move on." He licks a finger, sticks it in the air and finally says decisively "Eastwards. That's what the lack of wind is telling me."
DM - is he still sensing we're being scryed on?
Qadim-sul
"Hmmmm," Qadim-sul muses, "I'm beginning to wonder if the coffer may have held something that would help us on this side of the portal. Wading boots, for example," he says, looking down at the muck on his boots with a grimace. "Well, they do say hindsight gives you perfect vision. Onward, indeed."
Sorry for the delay! All caught up now (in this game at least!)
Question: this is a swamp, but it's in a cavern too, right? How high do the stone columns go?

Question: this is a swamp, but it's in a cavern too, right? How high do the stone columns go?[/ooc]
What you know: There are cave-like walls, there is a bog with hummocks of semi-dry land, there are many trees and vines making a canopy through which dim light filters, and you have now found stone columns piercing the canopy.
