Thanks, Drivish, I had forgotten. But he rolled a 2.

There is now a dead Zain-kin at your feet and a presumed-dead zain-kin somewhere in the chasm.

Male Dragonborn Fighter/1

"Well, I guess it wasn't fair, but it was their choice." Drivish looks over the side into the mist. "Maybe we should try going down here. Lafiel, would you be so bold as to scout ahead?"

Male Genasi Swordmage 2

"Well that was easy," Qadim-sul remarks, lowering his khopesh with a disappointed grimace. "Does anyone remember the one at the Duke's keep being a little more difficult to put down?"

If I understand correctly that both ape-men are down...

Correct

Rin shakes his orb, concerned at his inability to hit anything.

"The one at the palace seemed to be enhanced in some way. Well, at least we know their intentions are entirely dishonourable. Shall we go and meet some more of them? With a bit of luck this stupid thing might start working soon." He shoots a glare at his unresponsive orb.

Barhsevy looks at the corpse of the ape-man, silently aghast at the unreasoning fanaticism of its final moments.

I figure the second Zain-kin could have had up to 44 hit points.

Female Human Rogue 2

"Easy fight." Lafiel mentions, then checks the corpse of the dead apeman that's on the ledge for anything interesting. After that she nods to Drivish and begins to prepare the ropes. She looks down, trying to find the best place to descend to, then starts climbing down the rope.

The creature's equipment is broadly similar to that found on the assassin -- scale armor, heavy shield, short sword, three javelins -- with the normally steel items made of low-grade iron. The sword does not look to have seen as much battle use as the first one's.

After the first 100' or so, the rope will become slicker with moisture from the waterfall, adding 2 to the DC, so Take 10 will no longer be adequate for Lafiel. Meanwhile, I'll go do xp.

The cleric begins talking to no one particular, other than himself.

"Lafiel discovered at least three tracks from the razed village, one back to town and two deeper into the forest. Could we have just dispatched the last of the murderers? Or are those two still at large? Why did they attack that village? What do they hope to achieve by harming the Duke's family?"

He throws his arms up and looks straight into the sun.

"Oh Blessed Pelor, what have I gotten myself into?"

Female Human Rogue 2

Meanwhile, Lafiel keeps descending down into the chasm. After a while, she moves near a small ledge where the corpse of the dead apeman dropped to after it was killed. She examines the corpse from a distance, but doesn't see anything interesting so she keeps going down.
Athletics check (1d20+1=10)
Suddenly, Lafiel's hands slip and she starts falling, but manages to catch herself in time. Her heart beating quickly, she finds a small ledge and rests a bit to catch her breath.
Athletics check, 2nd try (1d20+1=20)
Grabbing the rope firmly, Lafiel keeps going down, trying to move down as silently as possible.
Stealth check (1d20+9=12)
However, a leg placed wrong hits a small rock, which falls down into the chasm.

You can try again as part of a move action.
✦ Fail by 5 or More: You fall (see “Falling,” page 284)

This is a DC12 climb check (10 for the rope + 2 circumstance for the damp). Lafiel's +1 means taking 10 makes no progress. Therefore she has to roll for every 15', and a 6 or less on the die means falling.

Lafiel, want to clarify?

Female Human Rogue 2

I rolled twice (I called them athletics but they're climb checks actually), failed on the first one, then succeeded on the second. How many more rolls do you want me to roll ? In any case, I'm including 5 more:

Athletics (Climb) Checks (1d20+1=16, 1d20+1=4, 1d20+1=4, 1d20+1=18, 1d20+1=8)
Well, apparently I manage to climb down 30 ft (15 from earlier post, then 15 more from the first roll from this batch) then fall down. ouch.

Upon hearing Lafiel scream and fall Barshevy grabs a rope and ties it around himself.

"Dangle me down to the bottom, quick! She'll need my healing!"

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

I'm going to say that every 15' is an opportunity to cling to a ledge via saving throw. So you fail one, and fall a total of 30' before hitting a landing. You are now 60' below the others and pretty banged up (-18hp), but, looking down, it could have been much worse.
Lafiel's falling damage (3d10=18)

Female Human Rogue 2

I'll make an acrobatics check to reduce some damage.
Acrobatics check to reduce damage (1d20+9=14)
Reduces my damage by 7, so I take 11 damage.
And I'm 160 ft. under everyone (100 ft. till moist rope + 30 ft. Lafiel climbed down + 30 ft. of free fall

Where is Lafiel ? can she see anything from her ledge ? Is the rope long enough to get to her ?

160', my mistake. And nicely done.

The mist is pretty thick, the stinging gasses mostly being overwhelmed by the stinging spray, but it looks like another 50' or so down

Spoiler:
there are a pair of matching portals set into opposite walls of the chasm on either side of the waterfall (about 25-30' apart).

Lafiel can't really see anything upward. The rope is long enough, but hanging out over the chasm -- it would take a DC15 Athletics or Acrobatics check to reach it on a lunge, with the same consequences for failure.

Everyone else is aware that Lafiel is no longer on the rope, but not much more than that.

Nodding at Barshevy, Rin also heads for the edge of the ravine.

"Down you go Father. We'll be right behind you."

Spoiler:

Rin's journey down the ropes when needed. It ain't pretty.

DC7 athletics checks to get down the rope (1d20=14, 1d20=6, 1d20=15, 1d20=19, 1d20=5, 1d20=8, 1d20=5)

Rin alternately shimmies and plummets down the rope, bouncing off the rock face...

"It's not that easy..." he mutters as he bangs his arms and legs ineptly on projecting stone.

He gains a small amount of confidence, but fatigue overtakes him in the end and he falls badly for the last part of the journey down ...

DC12 athletics checks for rope descent (1d20=17, 1d20=17, 1d20=4, 1d20=3)

How much damage do I need to roll for him? We may be down a wizard.

Spoiler:
DC10 actually. You're at +0, meaning you can take 10 the first 100'. After that, it's DC12.

14: descend to 115'; 6: fall 15' to 130'; 15 (save): catch yourself; 19: descend 15' to 145' (can see Lafiel below); 5: fall 15' to 160'; 8 (save): bounce another 15' to 175'; 5 (save): bounce another 15' to 190'; 17 (save): catch yourself.

If you survive you're only about 10' above the floor (read Lafiel's spoiler)

With the total of 60' falling, though:

Rin's falling damage (6d10=29)

YOu'll be at -5 and dying and need immediate medical help.

This will all be after Barshevy goes down, though, and he's being lowered, not climbing.

male Half elf wizard 7

Spoiler:

[ooc]OK. Hope he makes it. Climbing is not Rin's long suit. Along with much else apart from being supremely diplomatic.[ooc]

No, but those lowering you need to make Strength checks -- strongest character assisted by the others. Everybody helping go ahead and roll 5 Strength checks and I'll sort it out. Rin, I believe this is before what we talked about.

As you're strong enough to make the Athletics check with take 10, probably so

I'll take 10 on athletics, that gives me +18

If you could all please lower the fat cleric down. You wouldn't want the healer to get hurt, would you? :)

Spoiler:
Lafiel bandages herself and tries to stop the bleeding from her numerous bruises, than gets up and looks around, trying to assess her situation.
Is one of the portals reachable from Lafiel's location ?

One is on your side of the waterfall, but still about 40' down -- and you don't have a hold on the rope yet. That would be DC17 Athletics just to climb the slick rocks.

Male Genasi Swordmage 2

Sorry for falling behind!

Qadim-sul will offer to go down first, or follow right behind Barshevy. "I have a climbing kit you can use, Father," he says. "I think it's best if we don't send people down into these mists alone from now on."

Qadim-sul has +7 Athletics, so that's 17 if he takes 10, without the climbing kit. He'll offer the climbing kit to anyone else who thinks they need it (it gives +2 to Climb checks).

Alternately, he'll volunteer to stay up top and help lower everyone down, climbing down once everyone's at the bottom.
Strength checks (if needed for lowering) (1d20+2=19, 1d20+2=7, 1d20+2=12, 1d20+2=16, 1d20+2=7)

male Half elf wizard 7

Pat

Spoiler:

Would you permit Rin to change his mind and not kill himself in a singularly stupid way due to his player having no brains? If he can be lowered, it makes by far more sense. Clearly I was in highly dumb mode earlier today, but it's your call. If you want him to go ahead, that's also fine.

Male Dragonborn Fighter/1

Drivish will volunteer to go last. Taking 10 on Athletics gives me a 19.

Strength checks = 17, 11, 22, 21, 16

Play it out, then. Who knows, someone may stop you.

Fargrim, once reaching the bottom, will wait for everyone else to reach the bottom. Once gathered, he'll approach Drivish, "I suggest we take positions that would most protect the rest of the group, particularly the mage and the priest. One of us should take front, and the other should take rear. If we're to explore this place, I'd like to do so while protecting the others from surprise attacks. I'll take rear if ye'd prefer." He wispers, as not to attract too much attention from would-be attackers.

male Half elf wizard 7

Watching as Barshevy is lowered to the depths of the ravine, Rin impetuously grabs the rope.

"That looks easy enough." he says cheerfully. "I couldn't climb ropes when I was younger, I wonder if I've improved at all?"

Female Human Rogue 2

Is there any way I can reach the rope or get off of my ledge, as I'm stuck midway ? Also, a rules question - if I try to reach the rope using acrobatics, I'll fall and take damage only if I fail the check by 5 or more, like the way it is with athletics ?

Sovereign Court

M Human Expert 7

Rin alternately shimmies and plummets down the rope, bouncing off the rock face...

"It's not that easy..." he mutters as he bangs his arms and legs ineptly on projecting stone.

He gains a small amount of confidence, but fatigue overtakes him in the end and he falls badly for the last part of the journey down ...

At this point, Barshevy has been lowered more than halfway down to Lafiel (100' down, 60' from Lafiel).

Rin:

Spoiler:
You're now at -5hp. Lafiel and Barshevy are the ones who might get there in time to help. Go ahead and roll, say, 5 saves. Who knows, you might get a 20?

Lafiel:

Spoiler:
You pretty much have to jump for the rope, if you don't want to attempt the climb down the rocks. That's an all-or-nothing kind of thing, DC15 either Acrobatics or Athletics.

While contemplating this, you hear more than see Rin falling past and screaming, ending with a dull thud below.

Male Genasi Swordmage 2

Qadim-sul watches Rin fall and shakes his head. "Anyone else want to climb down, or wait to be lowered?"

He leans over the side, calling to Barhevy: "Father, try to patch up Rin when you get to him, too."

"F$@#in' amateurs!" he mutters under his breath.

Male Dragonborn Fighter/1

DM, what do I have to do to stop this nitwit from swinging onto the rope I'm carefully lowering?

Female Human Rogue 2

Spoiler:

I'll use a healing surge before jumping and trying to catch the rope.
Acrobatic jump to rope (1d20+9=14)
Lafiel hears Rin's scream, quickly readies herself, takes a deep breath, then jumps and tries to reach the rope. She manages to catch it, but her speed combined with the slipperiness of the rope cause her to lose hold of it.
Ok, I have no idea what happens now. Guess I'll just post 1d20 rolls :
1d20 Rolls for ??? (1d20=12, 1d20=8, 1d20=1, 1d20=11, 1d20=6)
My modifier for acrobatics is +9, modifier for athletics is +1 - just add them to the 1d20 rolls

Attempts to stop dying

Trying to stop dying here (1d20=1, 1d20=17, 1d20=6, 1d20=16, 1d20=14). No 20s, but 3 of the 5 were saves. Sorry folks, I posted his climb rolls early yesterday without thinking it through, if he goes down, it's my fault.

"Not the best idea I ever had." he thinks randomly as he hits the ground hard.

Female Human Rogue 2

Lafiel falls down a bit, but manages to catch herself on time. Thinking about the thud Rin's body made hitting the rocks, she hurries down the rope, trying to find out what's his condition.

More athletics checks (1d20+1=8, 1d20+1=14, 1d20+1=14, 1d20+1=4, 1d20+1=20)

Sovereign Court

Banged and battered herself, Lafiel reaches Rin on round 3, when he has just failed his second death save. Lafiel can easily see that Rin is severely injured and unconscious.

Lafiel:

Spoiler:
You are on a narrow ledge just 10' above the platform described earlier. You fell and bounced a couple times, but your acrobatics kept the damage down to the equivalent of a 10' fall: Lafiel fall damage (1d10=8)
