Campaign Cartographer Expert Wanted

Gamer Life General Discussion

Hi there, its me again. I have purchased a few campaign cartographer products over the past couple of years and been extremely frustrated with them. Here is my current issue....

I have CC3 downloaded and know how to use its basic functions, well enough to suit me at this point. I recently purchased Pro Fantasy product Cosmographer Pro to design some futuristic things for my Legion game. Problem is that I can't get it to download correctly.

Once I downloaded it, the screen starts flashing wildly making any use of the computer impossible unless I restart it. I contacted the company and they gave me the following email response.

I’m guessing you tried to install Cosmographer Pro into CC3? If this is the case, you need to uninstall & reinstall:

1) Using Windows Add & remove programs, uninstall both CC3 & Cosmographer Pro
2) Install CC3
3) Install only the compatibility update for Cosmographer
4) Apply the CC3 update patch
5)
Test it & let me know if it is still not working correctly.

So this is what I did. Problem is no where in here did she tell me to install Cosmographer. I checked my system and couldn't find any CC3 program or Cosmographer. I then downloaded CC3, that went fine. I then clicked the link for compatability update for Cosmographer she game me in her email and hit save after it downloaded. The screen started flashing so I turned off the computer. I then turned it back on and saw that I had a icon for the download on my desktop. I then went to the CC3 update patch link she provided me in the email and hit save. Again the screen starting flashing so I turned it off. I restarted the computer and again I had a icon on the desktop for that as well. Since things were not working the way it is, I tried loading Cosmographer, again screen flashes.

I sent her an email to clairfy the directions and asking why I don't download the actual Cosmographer program I bought. Problem is it will be a week or so before I hear from them. I also asked if my problem was because of Vista and not an older system.

So if you have any computer knowledge and would be interested in providing some useful advice other than "Wait for a response" (I'm to impatient and getting highly irritated AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!!) Please tell me what to do differently to get these programs to work. All I want to do is make a game, play it, make pretty pictures, and move on in life.

Thank you, I am off today so I would like to give it one more try. If we get online at the same time maybe gmail chat would be of some use in case I have downloading problems. I currently have all the CC3 items off the computer. I had a problem with Vista and zip files which I believe is now corrected, but everytime I attempt to get this thing going, I run into trouble with something. I have a CC3 patch link and another link on email files sent from Pro Fantasy that are suppose to help me as well. If you can walk me through this that would be great. What time do you think you'd be online Sebastrd?

I'm sorry. I completely forgot about this. Email me at "pellius at msn dot com" and I'll see what I can do.

Eileen, the Cartographer's Guild has lots of good advice for CC3 and similar products. It's a small but very friendly and dedicated community and I'd recommend asking there for advice if the program is still an issue.

Don't know if you got this solved yet. I don't have Cosmographer Pro (I do have CC3, CD3 (used to be 2), and DD3) so I am not sure how helpful I can be, but I'll try.

If I'm not helpful and you otherwise have not gotten a reply from Profantasy, try asking for help here: http://forum.profantasy.com/

If there's a step missing here, I think (according to this: http://www.profantasy.com/service/technical.asp?Q=&ID=78#cc3other) you need to install Cosmographer after step 3--you need to install the compatibility upgrade FIRST, then Cosmographer. Then apply the CC3 patch.

As for the screen flashing: not a total expert, but that screams to me, "Video card is unhappy about something." Have you updated your drivers recently? If no, try that. If yes, try rolling back to a previous driver.

Otherwise, yeah, it could be a Vista compatibility issue. I know Profantasy had a lot of problems making their stuff work in Vista, and it's possible Cosmographer Pro's update isn't adequate (in which case you should definitely keep in touch with ProFantasy because you might be able to help them troubleshoot the issue for you and other users).

Good luck. Worst comes to worse, try and find out when the fully revised Cosmographer will come out. Wait until then; in the meantime try to make do with CC3 (which is still very flexible) and maybe DD3 to help. Obviously, that's NOT ideal and I'm not saying you should just suck it up, but just saying you still have a good piece of software there and can work with that until the issues's resolved.

After passing many emails back and forth with Pro Fantasy, I finally have Campaign Cartographer up and running with Cosmographer. Now I just have to figure out how to design a spaceship. I was overall quite disappointed with the options and symbols for Cosmographer however. I didn't feel like there was a lot to choose from and the symbols could have been a lot more plentiful and far better in appearance. I'll work at it for awhile and see what I can do with it. I'm hoping to map out a Legion spacecruiser and the headquarters from the 1970s.

Glad to hear it's working.

I know what you mean about disappointment in symbols, but hopefully if they put out a Cosmographer 3 (which you should be able to upgrade to for free or at least a minimal price) the symbols will be much better. I've noticed that for City Designer 3, which just came out a couple months ago, the symbol availability and what you could do with them DRAMATICALLY improved over CD2.
