And by pretty cool, you mean incredibly annoying? A new +2 level adjustment and +1 hit die the player probably didn't want (three levels they now have to spend 'leveling' in the wererat unless you want to give them an insta forced boost, which could have its own problems), possibly a forced alignment change, and just an overall de-railing of the campaign...
Don't get me wrong, I love lycanthropes. I just hate how they're implemented in regards to altering the player.

In that, I think that you see it like an immediate curse which changes everything the day after being bitten. According to me (just to make it more fun), I wish to make it play in another way that is to say, to say to the bitten PC that, after a false throw of Fortitude (but not the day after, farer than that, perhaps during the Shoanti’s campaign) that he’ll feel not good, looking at the moon and feel something, and perhaps, near from the end of the campaign, I would made him a wererat, not changing his alignment because all wererats are not evil and made him play like that. That’s just an idea I’ve got, to not be so close to D&D rules and give more fun of this curse 
