Dilettante feat?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Liberty's Edge

Just a thought.

After noticing how often the "class X should have more skils points and skill option" argument seems to rear it's head inthese discussions, I decided that maybe a feat could cover that problem.

DILETTANTE
You are trained in unusual skills.
Benefit: Choose two skills that are not considered class skilss for you. They are now considered class skills.
In addition, you gain an additional 2 skill points per level for every level after you take this feat.

I know it's far from perfect. Help is welcome.

I would change the wording so that the two skills chosen are class skills for one (1) class in which you currently have at least one level. And only +1 skill point at a level up. Otherwise I see Human Rogues with large Intelligence scores being trained in everything and... and oh my... it'd be like a one-man-adventuring-party waiting to happen.

Not bad. Be simpler to bump the skill starved 2 skill class to 4 skills however.

Looking at it again, I forgot that the Pathfinder system grants a instant +3 to a skill if you already have rank in it. Maybe just allowing it to add skills to your list is enough without the extra skill points added.

I agree that just making 4 + Int as the base minimum for skills would be easier, But Jason B. has already said that is not in the cards at all. I was just looking for a "fix" mechanic that maybe he would embrace and players would like.

Appreciate the input. Keep it up.

Another option would be to add the 3.5e Psioncs SRD general feat Open Minded.

Open Minded [General]
You are naturally able to reroute your memory, mind, and skill expertise.

Benefit: You immediately gain an extra 5 skill points. You spend these skill points as normal. If you spend them on a cross-class skills they count as 1/2 ranks. You cannot exceed the normal maximum ranks for your level in any skill.

Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Each time, you immediately gain another 5 skill points.

As Pathfinder doesn't have "half ranks for cross-class skills", a simple 5 skill points should be sufficient. You still can't exceed the normal maximum ranks of (1 rank/level) in any skill.

The flavor text on Open Minded makes sense with psionics; otherwise, not so much. But that is just the flavor text. Is it OGL? If not, that might provent it's use for Pathfinder as worded. A feat with a similar mechanic could be though.

It is, and it's on my list for agitation when we get to feats.

You'd still want to tone down the number of skill points it provides. you have to keep in mind that +3 bonus that Pathfinder provides to ANY skill you have at least 1 rank in.

Actually, the +3 bonus only applies to class skills that you have ranks in. That can be a fairly significant difference.
