Capstone Powers

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Jason asked about the Druid's Capstone power, but the Cleric suffers from crappy capstone abilities for their domains as well. And it's not just these two, but there's a fair amount of Closed Base Classes, and plenty of PrCs that have this problem as well.

Any class(base or PrC) whose 20th/10/5th level power is just another use of an early power isn't all that exciting. This is esepcially true for a PrC: If i am going to go through all the trouble of entering a Prestige Class, including any DM In Game prerequisites, like finding a member of the PrC, or an organization or such, i want my end level ability to be something special. Not another +1/day use of a spell, or ability.

And since Pathfinder seems to be really encouraging staying with a class through all 20 levels, their base classes all need strong Capstone powers.

what are other peoples thoughts on all of this? Am I the only one who sees this as a problem or not?

I for one completely agree with you. I like the idea of taking a class all the way as in previous editions, but the fact of the matter is that if there isn't a capstone ability comparable to what I'd get by multi-classing then I'm not likely to do so.

The most glaring example of this is the Cleric, IMHO. I can't think of any other class off the top of my head that needs this adjustment, but Cleric definitely needs something. Some of the older prestige classes need capstones as well, but that's for another time.

OK, I have to ask....what is a Capstone Power??

That's one of the reasons to go into a PrC for just a couple of levels... no need to take more of the same with a "+1"...

Basically, the "Final Power" a character can gain in his class at the end of the (Non-Epic) class progression, like Weapon Mastery for the Fighter, or Master Hunter for the Ranger. And yes, the Cleric is a bit lacking in this.

Now I understand....and I agree the Cleric is a bit lacking. It would be nice to see something related to their god. Maybe not that they become an Avatar, but something that indicates they are well on their way towards it.

I do, and I don't.

The problem is that the cleric is already a very, very solid class. I understand the want for a capstone- but to make it "attractive" I'm afraid it also might make it too much.

What to give clerics at 20?
Cha mod/day maximized Channeling?

(off the cuff reply- I'm sure there are better ideas out there)

I like the 20th level capstone powers, and I agree that the cleric and the druid's are lacking.

My off-the-cuff suggestions:
-Mastery of Shapeshifting: 20th level druids can use wild shape to change into anything allowed by Greater Polymorph (i.e. dragons, humanoids and magical beasts in addition to elementals, plants and animals).
-Divine Commander: 20th level clerics can use Planar Ally for free once per day and the called creature will serve for 1 hour without requesting payment.

For cleric capstone powers, I'd rather see the domains give capstone powers that were good, instead of all clerics getting the same capstone power. Same for wizards and sorcerers for that matter, have their capstones come from bloodlines or schools.

Sure, but it's way harder coming up with a couple dozen different capstones that are equally good. Look at the wizard schools, for instance; Energy Immunity is pretty lame, but Mastery of All Schools is awesome (relatively).

I agree that it's harder, but that's the ideal route for me. I'd rather try to get a bunch of specialized capstone powers, and fail and revert to a single one per class than not try at all.

Ya, the idea would be to give Clerics a Capstone power based of their Domains, since the Sorc and Wizard have their's based on their Bloodlines and Schools, respectively.

Sure, not all of the powers will be equally spectacular, but since the Cleric's main power has been Domains, their capstone power should come from them.
