List of languages missing in Beta?

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Last session we were converting Alpha3 characters to Beta and I noticed I could not find the list of languages to choose from.

Are they missing or was I just blind?
What page then if it is the latter?

If you meant Racial Starting Languages, they're towards the end of each Race's section. "Languages: Dwarves begin play speaking Common and Dwarven. Dwarves with high Intelligence scores can choose any of the following: Elemental, Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, and Undercommon."

...I don't think that they will be detailed much more than that in the final rulebook.
(the Racial Starting Languages are somewhat dubious, since they are setting specific, really.
It would make more sense to not list such things in Core Rules, but it's D&D tradition.)

Languages are really dependent on your setting. For instance a Dwarf from Qadira in Golarion is certainly going to know Kelish (even though it's not on "the list"). If you're playing in one of Paizo's Pathfinder AP's or in Golarion, the Player Guides and Campaign Setting provide info on the Languages.

No, I meant the languages you get to choose from when you put ranks into Linguistics.

3.0 and 3.5e PHBs had this list. PF should too since its goal is to replace PHB, not just be a rulebook for one setting.

Such a list sure would help. Most of the languages should still be there, like the outsider languages (like celestial), the elemental languages (auran, terran...), sylvan, draconic, and so on.

I agree. I couldn't find it all, not in Races or near Linguistics. The list of alphabets and langusges would be extremely useful.

Ya gotta know what monsters your going to have before you know what they speak.
Since we're using the D&D MMs I use the D&D language list. If PF comes out with a MM I'd expect a language list of the creatures therein.

But that still means that we need to carry our PHB for this (or copy the pages with this list). They could have added this small list in the book under Linguistics.

Some languages have changes though, I think Aquan, Auran, Ignan, and Terran have been replaced by Elemental.

Dwarves(and only Dwarves) get the option to speak Elemental at 1st-level. If PF has removed the four elemental tongues, it makes even less sense for Dwarves to speak Elemental than it did for them to speak Terran. After all, there isn't even an obvious causal link between the language and the race now.

I agree with Arakhor. I think the main reason to condense these four languanges into one is to make it easier for conjurers to be able to communicate with summoned elementals.

Thanks for the vote of confidence :) I'm all for condensed languages for the elementals, maybe with Ignan or Terran dialects, as having one Elemental language certainly makes communicating with Inner Planar nasties easier!

Well, if it previously made sense for Dwarves to speak Terran with Earth Elementals,
and all the Earth Elemental now speak Elemental instead of a distinct Earth Elemental language,
it would seem that it makes just as much sense for the Dwarves to speak Elemental,
there just happens to be a side-benefit that they can also speak with OTHER Elementals.

Like if you learn English to speak with Brits, and there's a side benefit of speaking with Indians, Malays, Singaporeans, Jamaicans, Belizeans, South Africans, Nigerians, Irish, etc...
(not the perfect analogy, I know)

Hmm. The list of languages SHOULD be in the book. It apparently got left out. It'll be in the final book, but for now, going with the list from the PH is the way to go. Or the list of languages on pages 220–221 of the Pathfinder Campaign Setting hardcover, I guess.

Unfortunately you can't use English to talk to Glaswegians :P

It has the unintended side-effect of making Dwarves this unique race that has the power to speak to elementals where no other PF race so far does.

Humans can also learn Elemental as well, don't forget :P

This is why humans are the best overall race in the game imho.
