Ranger Talents

Classes: Barbarian, Fighter, and Ranger

I would like to see Rangers get talents at every other level just like the Rogue does. They're both skill based classes and i think it would allow for more class variety. I don't really see why you would have to be a high level to have some of these abilities and I don't think it would ruin game balance.

Ranger Talents:
Combat Trick: A ranger may gain a combat feat that she qualifies for in place of a ranger talent.

Fast Movement (Ex): A barbarian’s land speed is faster than the norm for her race by +10 feet. This benefit applies only when he is wearing no armour or light armour, and not carrying a heavy load. Apply this bonus before modifying the ranger’s speed because of any load carried or armor worn.

Fast Stealth (Ex): This ability allows a ranger to move at full speed using Stealth without penalty.

Woodland Stride (Ex): A ranger may move through any sort of undergrowth (such as natural thorns, briars, overgrown areas, and similar terrain) at his normal speed and without taking damage or suffering any other impairment. Thorns, briars, and overgrown areas that are enchanted or magically manipulated to impede motion, however, still affect him.

Uncanny Dodge (Ex): A ranger can react to danger before her senses would normally allow her to do so. She retains her Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) even if she is caught f lat-footed or struck by an invisible attacker. She still loses her Dexterity bonus to AC if immobilized.

Wild Empathy (Ex): as written

Swift Tracker (Ex): A ranger can move at his normal speed while using Survival to follow tracks without taking the normal –5 penalty. He takes only a –10 penalty (instead of the normal –20) when moving at up to twice normal speed while tracking.

Trackless Step (Ex): Starting at 3rd level, a ranger leaves no trail in natural surroundings and cannot be tracked. She may choose to leave a trail if so desired.

Enhanced Companion (Ex): Upon gaining an animal companion at 4th level, the ranger must choose a single type of animal. The ranger cannot call a different animal companion. The ranger’s effective druid level is equal to the ranger’s level –2 (instead of the normal 1/2) for that type of animal. This animal must be on the basic list of companions that can be chosen at 4th level and cannot be changed.

Advanced Talents
Evasion (Ex): A ranger can avoid even magical and unusual attacks with great agility. If he makes a successful Ref lex saving throw against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, he instead takes no damage. Evasion can be used only if the ranger is wearing light armor or no armor. A helpless ranger does not gain the benefit of evasion.

Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex): Requires Uncanny Dodge

Quarry (Ex): A ranger can, as a standard action, denote one target within his line of sight as his quarry. Whenever he is following the tracks of his quarry, a ranger can take 10 on his Survival skill checks while moving at normal speed, without penalty. In addition, he receives a +2 insight bonus on attack rolls made against his quarry and all critical threats are automatically confirmed. A ranger can have no more than one quarry at a time and the creature’s type must correspond to one of his favored enemy types. He can end this effect at any time as a free action, but he cannot select a new quarry for 24 hours. If his quarry is killed, he can select a new quarry after waiting 1 hour. This ability does not confer the ability to know whether or not the quarry is still alive. The ranger must see proof that his quarry has been killed to select another after 1 hour.

Camouflage (Ex): A ranger can use the Stealth skill to hide in any sort of natural terrain, even if the terrain doesn’t grant cover or concealment.

Improved Evasion (Ex): Requires Evasion: A ranger’s evasion improves. This ability works like evasion, except that while the ranger still takes no damage on a successful Reflex saving throw against attacks, he henceforth takes only half damage on a failed save. A helpless ranger does not gain the benefit of improved evasion.

Improved Hunter's Bond (Ex): Requires Animal Companion: This ability functions like the druid ability of the same name. The ranger’s effective druid level is now his ranger level.

Hide in Plain Sight (Ex): While in any sort of natural terrain, a ranger can use the Stealth skill even while being observed.

Improved Quarry (Ex): Requires Quarry : A ranger’s ability to hunt his quarry improves. He can now select a quarry as a free action. He can now take 20 while using Survival to track his quarry, while moving at normal speed without penalty. His insight bonus to attack his quarry increases to +4. If his quarry is killed or dismissed, he can select a new one after 10 minutes have passed.

I think that the PRPG Beta ranger is already complicated enough as is, with spells, favored enemy, favored terrain, combat styles, and a slew of other abilities. However, I think that your idea could make sense if it was done right... it just might be a trick to achieve backwards compatibility if a talent system like this is used for what were previously automatic class features. I also think that giving all rangers Fast Movement would be good, or having it as a talent as you suggest if that system is adopted.
