Why are things named what they are named?

I'm making characters tonight, and some of the racial abilities strike me as mis-named.

DWARVES

Hatred - it's only a +1 to hit, and it dictates what a character feels. How about Foebane or Orcfoe or Sworn Enemy or something?

GNOMES

Hatred - the same

HALFLINGS

Fearless - it's only a +2 to save vs fear, not total immunity. how about Staunch or Bravery or something that sounds a little more moderate?

I have to agree with you on Hatred, but while I agree with you in principle on Fearless, I happen to like the word :)

I think "Hatred" and "Greed" are a nod to one of the PF Adventure Paths.

I'm mixed between liking them for the "Hey - this isn't just some random bonus" aspect and the "Umm - you're telling me how I feel about people I've never met?" aspect. Leaning more with the former - the latter just reminds me of 1st edition's racial preference chart (Grognard Quiz: "Are dwarves T or A to Half-orcs?")

Heh. I spot a trick question! The answer is neither, because the table on page 18 of the 1st Ed PHB clearly indicates that Dwarves hate half-Orcs :)
