Harrowdroth the Nightmare Beast is a candy A$$

Did anyone else run into this?

Tonight my PCs tore right through Harrowdroth the Nightmare Beast (Island of Last Resort). I'll admit he did do alot of damage in melee, but for a CR 18 encounter he was weak!

I've been playing DnD for a fair amount of time and I remember the Nightmare Beast from Dark Sun as being an actual terror! If memory serves, it was:

1). The Dragon
2). Nightmare Beasts
3). Drakes

This guy was a pale imitation.

I'm about the introduce Tigalos Island in my campaign, and I see the nightmare beast as an easy kill. Heck, with my group, I might have to add one or two extra nightmare beasts just to make it believable. A party of 16th level slayers concentrating their might on one CR 18 foe is no contest at all. Just my initial thoughts. Once the moment of truth arrives, I suspect I'll make a variety of adjustments to suit the campaign.

Trust me, you'll have to - so far my guys have battled:

1). The ropers - one was REALLY advanced - tough fight
2). Advanced Octopuss tree - they went through it like poop through a goose
3).4 displacer beast packlords - decent random encounter
4). The Titan and his advanced gargoyle/fighter minions - they won that one with two KIAs, both arcanists - VERY TOUGH FIGHT
5). Tilagos bulette w/max hps
6). Harrowdoth - see above
7). 3 'Jotunblood trolls' - template from Green Ronin's advanced bestiary - that I threw in. The defeated that one with minimal resources.

I suggest redoing Harrowdeath's feats - maybe quickened L.Bolt, or empowered C.lightning? And raising his Charisma - at the least

I feel that single creature encounters after level 12 or so just aren't very well representative of their CR. The number of actions that occur each round just allow too much to happen all focused at the one creature before it can react again.

Not sure what the right answer is here though... extra creatures in the encounter does sound like a good idea though.

When I ran that adventure, I had Darl Quethos' group show up in the middle of the fight to try and kill-steal. The three-way grudge match between the pc's, the Hand of the Lich Lord, and the Nightmare Beast was tough to run, but was a much longer and more satisfying encounter than the Nightmare Beast would have been alone.

Oh, and nothing freaks a group out more than the first time an efreeti answers someone else's wish.

For which we all admire you.

And pray tell what wishes you inflicted upon your victi...players.

Yeah... Having a Creature with Wishes they can't use themselves just begs for a few humanoid allies! I'll be doing the same with Kulublax the Glabrezu in the STAP!

It is worth mentioning that Dragotha will also be a candy ass to beat if the group goes at him when he's alone. Expendable minions are greatly to be desired there.

And with Kyuss at the end.

My players took it down in one round - "Final Rebuke" by the Beguiler. It had no SR or resistance to fear, so it was easy meat.

Week 43 - Gauthakan cops a pounding; and, Sayren-Lei goes off.
