General Discussion (Prerelease)

Hey guys,

We're going to be starting an epic level game in Pathfinder. Using what we know about starting gold in Pathfinder compared to D&D, what would a 21st level character's starting gold be?

In D&D starting gold is 975,000 for 21st.

The economics past first level doesn't seem to be changed any - at least at yet. I'd leave it at that amount (which is *plenty* - lots of experience making 20th-21st level characters here).

Starting gold is *slightly* (0-25% based on class) higher at first level, that's about it.

I've done some rough extrapolations. The formula for gold seems to roughly be that for level X+1, a PC should have (the gp at level X) * 1.3.

Example: Level 21 Pathfinder PCs should have 880*1.3, or 1144 kgp, roughly. (And yes, that is kgp, ie 1000 gp, or a total of 1,144,000 gp.)

If it is allowed to continue at this rate of increase, though, the trend gets ABSURDLY out of hand by level 30, though. It suggests that 30th level PCs should have 12.1 million GP, which 3.X Epic PCs aren't suggested to have until level 40.

I've done some work with a diminishing returns system (21st-30th levels each being 1.2 times the previous, 31st-40th levels being 1.175, 41st-50th 1.15 times, etc. This pattern produces numbers somewhat higher than 3.5's figures, but not as absurd as continuing the pre-Epic Pathfinder's values of 1.3 times each previous level's total. (My system results in 5900 kgp at ECL 30, as opposed to 3.5's 4.3 mil, or Pathfinder's 12.1 mil.)

Thanks for the reply guys. I'll pass on both sentiments to the DM.

Oh, erp, right - there's gold charts in Pathfinder now :)

Epic Level Handbook sidebar indicated that gold totals increased (or at least treasure totals increased) at a rate of 10% instead of 30% after 20th level - to prevent moon-sized chunks of platinum.

So I'd go with 880*1.1 = 968K...

Or, 3.5 20th = 760K, 21st 975K = 28% =~ 30%

So go with Kvantum here - 1150kgp.

I think the reason for in creased gold values is to accommodate the now-more expensive ability score increasers. (The bonuses are now all combined into Headbands and Belts). If you're still using separate Amulets/Bracers of Health, Belts of Giant Strength, Gloves of Dexterity, Headbands of Intellect, Periapts of Wisdom, and Cloaks of Charisma, then I'd suggest revert back to DMG/Epic Level Handbook values.

Edit: The XP Numbers are even worse. If I've got the pattern right, it's 2.9 BILLION XP for 40th level. Under the Fast progression.
