Suggested Change: Human w. Martial Weapon Training

Ability Scores and Races

Liberty's Edge

Not all humans are going to focus on martial weapons. Let me suggest that in lieu of having martial weapon training, a human may choose one additional skill to treat as a class skill.

Liberty's Edge

either having a martial weapon or a different class skill?

The human martial weapon is meant to keep their design parallel with the other races, who often get martial weapon training with a small set of culturally familiar weapons. If we change this for humans, we should also give the other races a set skill or two, that are appropriate to the race, and can always be considered a class skill. The PC would need to sacrifice the set of racially preferred weapons to choose the bonus class skills. This might complicate things too much, but I think its important to keep the races designs consistent. It's easier to be sure they are balanced that way.

If this is the case, what martial weapon does the half-elf get? The precedent has already been set by the half-elf race that not all races necessarily get martial weapon training.

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the martial weapon ability of the humans anyways. It just doesn't sit right with me for some reason.

I would suggest that a half-elf, like a human, would get a choice. This is tricky, though. It runs the risk of making half-elves and humans too similar. Is a choice of any light or finessable weapon too focused or narrow?
