City of Brass

Legacy of Fire

I've been enjoying reading and plotting stuff in Sword & Sorcery's City of Brass boxed set. Will this AP be consistent (or at least fairly easy to convert) to use that? It's a great resource.

Good question. I'll be writing up Pathfinder's version of the City of Brass in the Cosmology book out next year, but that said, I'm not going to be the only person involved in the handling of that particular topic. No specifics of course, but some -really damn qualified- hands are going to get to play with it.

The vast majority of the DnD/Planescape/AlQadim City of Brass is WotC IP, so any Golarion version will be starting out fresh. But it shall be cool, I promise. And if you don't like it, well the Efreeti response is something like 10 years slavery, so hah! ;)

But back to the question of Necro's CoB. I haven't read it, and short of delving in the very much illegal depths of one of my players' PDF collections on the chance it might be lurking there, I don't have any way to look at it. On some level that's probably for the best, because I already have to reinvent the place in what space I devote to it, so no need to have to skirt around a whole 'nother vision of the place in the process. Of course, I haven't even started on the planes of the Inner Sphere yet, so I can't particularly say that I have firm ideas for the CoB and the Efreet beyond what was in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting yet.

Thanks for the quick response. I look forward to seeing what you concoct.

I was listening to the Pathfinder seminar that was posted on the boards, and CoB was mentioned as being apart of the LoF AP.

As I own Necro's CoB, it would be great if this AP could reference and be playable with Necro's product. It is a great product, and I would really like to be able to use the material in it with the upcoming AP.

Count me as a vote for making a link between the two products.

I also own the boxed set and you can read on every page that it is a work of love!

Why re-invent the City itself when you can fit it in nicely? It even has a big Temple for Asmodeus!

I'll look into the Necromancer City of Brass... but there's always the questions of:

1) How much is open content that we can use.

and

2) How much contradicts or otherwise doesn't fit well with Golarion's world themes.

In any case... we've got months to figure it out, so no worries yet!

James, thanks for the reply.

Even if you decide not to link the products directly, including side bar with recommendations on how to link the products would be very appreciated. I am sure that Bill & Clark would be accommodating on this.

Of course... complicating the matter is the fact that I haven't actually seen the Necromancer City of Brass product. I'll hopefully be able to get my hands on one before too long, though...

While I am excited to hear that the City of Brass will be used...

I am not looking forward to yet another version of the city...

Yeah, I know there are many reasons why you might prefer to have your own, but I just recently (relatively speaking of course) just forked over the $70 for Necromancer's version, and have not even had the chance to use it!

If you do come up with your own vision of the city, you better blow my socks off with it, that's all I'm sayin'...

Chances are pretty good that our 8-page version of the city will be little more than a brief gazetteer with a map, for use by those who want a Golarion-specific version OR by those who don't have access to other versions, like the Necromancer Games version. The adventure itself that takes place there is set entirely in one fortress, with little to no actual stuff going on outside those walls, so it should be a simple matter to use this adventure with any version of the City of Brass.

(AKA: Making it so that you HAVE to buy a 70 dollar out of print boxed set in order to play the adventure is Bad.)

Well, that certainly changes things now doesn’t it. No worries then...

Thanks for the reply Mr. Jacobs. I always love hearing directly from the source...

Now I can focus on just looking forward to the product :-)

I've discussed this with James some since I am writing the adventure that takes place in the City of Brass. I haven't seen the Paizo gazetteer version of City of Brass or the Great Beyond book that will be coming out, but I do own the NG boxed set. Like James said, the adventure takes place in a single location so it won't be setting-heavy, however, I will endeavor not to go against any of Necromancer's continuity in case people want to expand their campaign outside the single adventure location. However, it will all be subject to the editorial process, so if what I write doesn't jive with the Paizo CoB gazetteer I can't promise that changes won't be made. One more caveat: while I have read through the boxed set, I have not had time for in-depth study (nor probably will I before the adventure is due), so I apologize in advance if a continuity mistake slips in over some nuance I had not fully grasped. I'll do my best, though.

I do know that I will not be able to use the CoB info published by TSR for Al-Qadim, so if you are using that the similarities will be only of the most general variety, since that info is not OGL.

The greatest inspiration I plan on drawing from (as much as possible anyway) is the illustration on the back of the 1e DMG which looks like something out of Moorcock or Leiber. It's one of my favorite D&D illos.

Greg, thanks for posting your comments. I agree with James in that to make it mandatory to buy a $70 out of print product is unreasonable. Now with that said, I think there are a lot of Paizo fans that have Necro's COB box set so planting a few easter eggs and a side bar or two would be great!

In any event, your stuff is awesome, and I am convinced that you and James will come out with a fantastic product.

PS...just don't forget a side bar or two!
