Demon-tainted Elves

General Discussion (Prerelease)

Hey, all. I'm in the process of working on a concept of an elf-based tiefling sort of race for use in my Pathfinder game (plus I think the concept of a line of demon-tainted elves in Golarion would be pretty cool), sort of like the Fey'ri in Forgotten Realms but waaaay powered down to avoid level adjustment. I was just curious what approach others might take, and I'll definitely be posting my own ideas to the thread once I solidify them a bit. Oddly enough, the name is what's taking me the longest to decide on.

Take the demon-possessed templates from Advanced Bestiary and apply. :)

Or just apply Tiefling as a template instead of a race.
Bingo.

The last approach is sort of what I had been using, heh. Picking and choosing a bit to make them a little more unique. Adding in the Tiefling resistances, for instance, but not the Darkness spell-like or even Darkvision, since I didn't want to sacrifice the elven Low-light. Though I'll have to look at the demon-possessed template, too. :)

Then you can adapt the template with equivalent abilities :
Low-Light Vision
Resist Fire 5
One cantrip (Daze or Flare) 3/day or a first level spell (Cause Fear or Charm Person) 1/day

It's quite-a-lot of fun, though I don't know if it will help you in your "no level adjustment" quest.

Maybe I'm the only one who hates the concept of the planetouched template. Tieflings and aasimar are their own race, even if they did originate from human stock and are born into the line every couple generations (as per 2nd ed). It's no different if you apply the bloodline to elves or dwarves or halfling except you don't get any racial bonuses from the base race. Tieflings don't get an extra feat or skill point so they shouldn't get immunity to sleep or low light vision or elven blood.

The Fey'ri of FR were a specific breeding program of one Sun elf house. Only through the elven magics of the house did the Fey'ri become what they were. In any other situation a demon who whelped a scion by an elf would produce a half-fiend and that creatures children by elf would produce normal tieflings with superficial elven features, but not racial traits.

i am with primemover in this

but why don't you take some of the racial traits and chenge them, example:

Instead of Elven Magic, Tainted blood: +1 racial bonus to DCs on the use of conjuration and evocation spells. +2 miscelaneous to bluff and stealth

keep low-light vision and keen senses

and change the elven immunities for both Fire Resistance 2 + con mod (or just five if you prefer) and +2 in saving throws vs evocation spells refering to fire

just some examples, obviously the bonuses language would have either abyssal or infernal

and if you are going to give them weapon familiarity add: Whip, and any other quick and wicked weapon you find, give them only 3 and lets them try them as martial weapons

Good suggestions, all. I'm definitely considering a few things, and using the standard tiefling with elven features is an option, I suppose. Most of the things that would set it apart from a human-based tiefling are superficial, and have little effect on rules and mechanics.

But what are you going to give in trade for those cute tricks? if you're going to keep the LA to zero something has to give.

You could always just play a tiefling and describe him as having elf traits... but then again, I agree with Primemover003. I believe he is basically saying: It doesn't matter to what race a planetouched is born to. Cosmetically it may look more like an elf, or a dwarf, etc, but mechanically, the races abilities are "overridden" by the planetouched's.
