Request for Clarification: Critical Hits

General Discussion (Prerelease)

On page 136 of the beta ruleset (Combat chapter), it states that one rolls damage more than once along with all the "usual" bonuses when making a successful critical hit. However, shortly thereafter appears the statement:

"Exception: Extra damage over and above a weapon's normal damage is not multiplied when you score a critical hit."

My question is this: What qualifies as "usual bonuses", and what qualifies as "extra damage over and above a weapon's normal damage"?

In particular, under which of these two categories do each of the following fall: Strength bonuses, magic weapon enhancement bonuses, energy or other enchantments upon a weapon (i.e. the extra +1d6 fire damage from a flaming weapon), Weapon Specialization damage, the Fighter's Weapon Training ability, bonus damage from the Bard's Inspire Courage ability, bonus damage from the Ranger's Favored Enemy ability, bonus damage from the Paladin's Smite Evil ability? That is, which of these take effect multiple times upon a successful critical hit?

This is the same as its always been.

Strength and magical bonuses are part of the weapon damage.

Sneak attacks and flaming attacks are not.

Generally speaking, any set bonuses (+1, +2, +3) are multiplied and any extra rolls (+1d6 sneak, +1d6 fire, etc.) are not multiplied.

Ahh does anybody remembe the old days when you just (through "unofficial" crit rules that everyone seemed to use) multiplied the total regular damage by 2 or 3 or whatever to end up with 5 bajillion gajillion points of damage? The good ole days <waxes nostalgiac>

I suspected this was likely the case, but the wording of that exception seemed odd. Furthermore, my calculations regarding the critical-mechanic based Devastating Blow feat have yielded some...unusually high figures (such as 180 damage strikes)...in comparison to other similar options/Feat chains. Nevertheless, after looking up the passage in my 3.5 PHB, I now see that the language has been copied directly and that the Exception statement was previously followed by an example. As that example involved an iconic character, I now assume that the confusing nature of this "exception" passage is the result of removing this likely non-OGL material.
