General Discussion (Prerelease)

Silver Crusade

Hi all,

I am shifting my character over from 3.5 to PRG and need some assistance! Especially if any one has access to the new Beta rules.

I am creating a drow Druid 3/Wizard 3/Mystic Theurge 4/Arcane Hierophant (based on a build from a D&D messageboard). The final progression will be (by the end of STAP, hopefully) Druid 3/Wizard 3/Mystic Theurge 4/Arance Hierophant 10.

Now, I know there is a lot of discussion about how Mystic Theurge is broken and all that, but I am trying to keep as close to the character's 3.5 version as possible. However, our GM is allowing us to make some modifications to improve any problems we had in the past.

Can any one recommend skills and feats that would be useful for this build in PRG? Should I be looking at Arcane Disciple, Practiced Spellcaster, Versatile Spellcaster etc?

The role I am looking for in the group is generalist. We already have a halfling wizard and a human druid. So I am looking to continue to act as a support arcane/divine caster rather than take on either as a primary role; which seems to be more appropriate for the PrC's I have taken.

Can any one make some suggestions? (I hope I have given enough information to help).

Liberty's Edge

The feats listed are not OGL, and thus have not been addressed by the Beta rules. That, plus the additional feats that are gained through the Pathfinder rules (3 additional feats by 20th level) would suggest the easiest solution to be a level by level rebuild of the character with the new system, taking the new character abilities into consideration.

Personally, I've seen the Mystic Theurge go both ways, from a well played and valuable addition to the party to a completely off the chart gamebreaker and ruiner of what had been a very enjoyable campaign. It just depends on the player behind the character.

For advice, which is what you asked, I'd suggest with the Druid go for an animal companion Natural Bond and Practiced Spellcaster feats if possible. Most suggest a multiclass skip the companion, but I have a soft spot for them, and practiced spellcaster increases your effective caster level for spell effects.

For the arcane I'd suggest a Universal Wizard with an Arcane Bond item and the feats Practiced Spellcaster and Collegiate Wizard for a broader spell selection. The bonded item will be useful, the increased caster level again, and the benefits of not having to worry about prohibited schools gives the character more overall utility, which I think you mentioned as a primary party role.

I'm not too familiar with the Arcane Hierophant, so I can't add much to that, though I guess if they cast spells spontaneously, Versatile Spellcaster might be of use, but it won't help much for the Druid, Wizard, or Mystic Theurge, all of which must prepare their daily spell lists.

Hope some of this is useful. Cheers, and good luck with the character.

Anyone who suggests that the Mystic Theurge is "broken", or anything less than vastly underpowered compared to any of its full-caster brethren, has some very deep illusions about how the game fundamentally works. You shouldn't listen to any advice they give you, because it will be coming from a deeply uninformed individual and have no actual basis in fact.

Druid 3/Wizard 3/Theurge/Hierophant is pretty much the best way to do it, but if you're starting from level 1, you're bound to be disappointed.

I'd suggest just making an Archivist, which mixes wizardly flavor with divine casting, or a Cleric with the Magic domain.

I concur in the underwhelming aspect of the Theurge. That doesn't mean it isn't fun to play, however. I've always wanted to play one.

It can get un-fun. It tends to hit the point of least fun at level 7, when you're casting 2nd-level spells instead of 4th-level.

The natural issue with 3.5.

Thank you for your answers! :)

Why would you take both Mystic Theurge and Arcane Heirophant? AH trumps MT in almost every way for a Wiz/Drd build.

I don't see either of these as being broken. AH is slightly overpowered if you focus on your animal companion, as it enables you to create a very tough and smart AC, and that can be buffed quite a bit with non-core feats and spells. Still, it comes at the expense of raw spell power. You get a huge variety of spells, but will always lag behind a single-classed character in terms of the number of max-level spells you can throw out. You're also more limited since you need two primary stats to keep your bonus spells and DCs high.

The disadvantage of these two in PF is that you lose most of your school abilities (for Wiz), domains (for Clr), or bloodline powers (for Sor) once you quit taking the base class. You get a great set of known spells, though!

Because a druid 3/wizard 3 doesn't qualify for Arcane Hierophant (which needs a Fort save of +4).
