A Noob's perspective on 4th edition

4th Edition

Anyone heard of Head Injury Theatre? This kid named Jared writes these "review" articles about horror movies and other nonsence.

His articles are actually very entertaining. :)

Well he was introduced to D&D recently and plays 4th edition. He's never played D&D before but has played MMORPGs. He wrote an article spacifically for noobies and those who know nothing of D&D.

Its a good read Check it out.

His illustraded version of the cosmology is worth taking a peek at alone. :)

The thing he says that took me by surprise (because I dont own 4th edition) is that the Underdark cant be reached by digging and that its sort of another plane. Is that true?

I have not checked out his 4E review but I did, 6 or 8 months ago, check out his article on classic D&D monsters. That article is written when he knows what D&D is but has not ever really played it.

I highly recommend it - its pee yourself funny, especially if you go way back and remember these monsters from 'the good old days'.

Otherwise I think he is mistaken on the Underdark. So far as I can tell there is no difference between 3.x Underdark and 4E Underdark except that 4E assumes your higher level when you go there and all the classic monsters that hang out in the Underdark are very potent.

He might be confused between that and the Abyss or the Shadowfell.

The Underdark is the same as it was in 3.x and before - the furthest, most dangerous realms of the underground.

Yeah, Underdark still part of the regular world. I agree the illustration of the 4E basic cosmos is hilarious though. Maybe WotC still has time to tuck it into the MotP.

I don't agree with everything in his review, but it was funny. Thanks for the link. :)

Sovereign Court

I'm confused as to how much of a n00b he really is. At the beginning, he states that he's been role-playing for 10 years, but not with D&D. If you ask me, that's not the exactly the same as someone who has never played an rpg. Those are two completely different species of n00b.

I thought this was very funny. I don't think the planes are as complicated as he makes them out to be (also keep in mind, their makeup is mostly new to 4e), but I was extremely entertained.

Scarab Sages

If you read to the end of the article, and the "thanks" section, it seems he has actually played D&D before, which might explain his awareness of monsters and the Book of Erotic Fantasy.

Pretty funny articles on the stupid monsters though.

Sovereign Court

Very cute. Thanks for sharing.

Dark Archive

I actually liked his take on the points of light concept better than his illustration of the cosmology. Anyone know where he got the "before" teifling picture?

Let it be known that a "newb" is different than "n00b".

From Urban Dictionary.com

A "noob" is a person who is new or inexperienced in a subject, usually an online game. Noobs are usually annoying and excessively stupid. Do not confuse noobs with newbs, who are inexperienced players that tend to be more mature and strive to become better.

2nd edition Planescape Monster Manual.

"The Christ Child Demands Obedience!"

That's just funny.

Yeah back when all tieflings didn't look the same.

I personally liked his Cosmology picture.. it suddenly makes more sense to me :)

::grumbles::Leave it to a corporation to take a good idea throw it into a meatgrinder and turn it into chicken nuggets.

And you know it has to be said.. "What's a noobian?"

Sorry random Banky Edwards quote..(or at least close enough) :)

I love how the underdark has a spider in it, the Feywild's underdark has a spider with fairy wings, and the Shadowfell's underdark has a spider with a skull head. :)

It's the small touches that count. ;)

My apologies. I didn't know there was a difference. After all these years, I'm still learning internet lingo. In fact, I still don't know what YMMV means.

Your milage may vary.

Am I the only one that actually plays Limited?

Seriously, I've seen the complaints of the randomized miniatures but really, Limited rocks.
