You can also get whiteboards that are magnetic....might be useful.
YOu can also get smart White boards.

I favor easel pads like this.
That way, you can return to a location without having to erase one and redraw another -- you just pick up a used sheet. You can also pre-draw as many as locations as you like, saving lots of time.
They're available with a 1" square grid. Cost is roughly $15 per pad, but it'll last a while and is worth the convenience. And you can write on it with anything you want -- paper doesn't require special attention.

You can purchase the 'white board' board itself in stores such as Home Depot. It's actually a paneling, and comes in a 4'x8' sheet. The store will cut it to size for you if necessary. The last time I bought several, they were less than 15 bucks, but that was some time ago. We use them in my local game store to cover the gaming tables I built. It's very convient to have an entire 4x8 table be a whiteboard, as there's plenty of space for both drawn scenery and for both players and GM to write notes. The downside is that its white. I haven't talked the store into buying 4x8 sheets of durable plexiglass yet, as these are much more expensive. With plexiglass, you still have the ability to write with dry erase markers, but you can put maps under it for a more atractive, if less durable, table.

These are THE BOMB with a sheet of acetate for organized play. Lets you run the same mod/episode many times with the same maps.

We did this too. It's called Melamine (I think). We then used a carpet knife and a T-Square to score a 1" grid onto the board. A quick swipe of the lines with a dry-erase marker and a cleaning later and it was ready to go. All told, it took about an hour to set it up and it's been in use for about 4 years now. Works well and much less expensive than whiteboard.
