Lovecraft inspired Dark Fantasy

3.5/d20/OGL

I have this idea for a campaign fermenting in my head. Dark Fantasy inspired by the tales of H.P.Lovecraft and those of the Cthulhu mythos using what is admissible for publication in the OGL and 3rd Party materials. I know Mind Flayers are out but are Aboleths? Also what other books might folks suggest?

Over here in this thread, they discussed OGL mind flayer variants that fit the mood and feel of Lovecraft quite well...

In a Dragon article on 'Dark Arabia' that sort of Lovecrated-up the Al-Qadim setting (by Wolfgang Bauer, IIRC), there was the suggestion that Gibbering Mouthers used to be people, cultists or scholars or just terribly unlucky souls, who had delved into Thing that Should Not be Known.

I love that idea, and even more so, of having the Gibbering Mouther be a composite creature, perhaps the liquid noisome remains of an entire cult or cabal of scholars, all flowed together, a mass of babbling mouths and rolling eyes like something out of a Tzimisce's funner dreams...

Some overconfident and unwise soul might even get the idea of trying to recapture their lost lore and dark knowledge by listening to them, unaware that the knowledge they seek will twist them the same way.

    I remember that article...

You don't happen to recall the issue it was in do you?

That is so cool. I'll give it a shot with one of my suggestions, the howler:

    Howler

Mankind has always been afraid of what lurks in the night. Many a child has stared wide-eyed out their bedroom window, fearing to see a shifting form of blackness in the forest, or the glint of light off a fearsome creatures eyes.

Long ago, man domesticated the dog - tamed it, made it his pet and companion. This should have been an end to the fear, but for the Howler. Every so often, a canine is touched by the dark forces of beyond, twisted into the very nightmare of men.

It's piercing wail stirs men from slumber, but confidently they ignore it. "Quiet, dear, it is only a coyote." But the wails continue. Only when it is too late do it's victims realize their mistake - that their nightmares are real. Slowly, the unrelenting Howler preys on those who do not fear the night, driving them to madness. Taking pleasure in their victims madness-induced actions, the Howler then revels in the panic and destruction left in it's wake.

Google-foo suggests that it might be #198, an article called 'Scimitars Against the Dark.'

    EDIT: Confirmed.
