I am not saying I am ditching Pathfinder because of Vancian magic. I have not decided about Pathfinder one way or the other but that has little to do with Vancian magic. I was just trying to point out that I heard the term before a few months ago and that Vancian magic has always been a thorn in my side.

But Vancian magic is part of the legacy of D&D, kinda like gnomes. You get rid of that and you might as well play 4th edition. Or GURPS. Or Exalted. Or Big Eyes Small Mouth. Come to think of it I liked the Dynamic Sorcery attribute in BESM. Basically how it works is you decide what you want your magic to do and the GM decides if your attribute is high enough to do it.
