I'm going to vote for who seems the least ridiculous and dangerous to me.
Is Pat Paulsen still running?

James Keegan |

I'm voting Obama. There are some fair criticisms of the guy (lack of experience, for example) but I think he's smart enough and dedicated enough to do a good job. Plus, it will be a refreshing change of pace to have a president that can really deliver a speech and seem comfortable in front of a crowd.

"Why must it always be thus," bemoaned the werwoof.

I think I might be voting for McCain.
I just don't think it's a good time for ojt in the White House.
Obama needs to gain some experience.
Yeah, except there's the whole "four more years of Bush's disastrous economic and energy policies" thing.
Oh, and say hello to war with Iran! Assuming Bush doesn't kick things off before the end of the year, that is :)

Yeah. Obama will just go over there and talk to everybody, and it'll be hunky dory.

I was going to vote Libertarian this year... until I found out that they picked a former Republician as their frontrunner. I disagree with his view on international affairs, but I would have went with Ron Paul, since he seems to be the only one without ties to special interests groups/lobbyists/cronies.
Maybe another independent will step up to the plate. Until then, I think my ballot will remain undecided.

I'd vote for Obama if he promised to smile, but not actually do anything. Or if he got, say, Fox Fallon to be his running mate.
I'd vote for McCain if he had a big public row with the religious right and swore to keep "faith" out of the White House and in church where it belongs. Or if he just learned some basic economics. Or got Bernanke to be his running mate.
I'd vote for Obama if McCain's platform becomes "Read my lips: cheap gas!"
I'd vote for McCain if Obama's platform becomes "People don't need to eat! Biodiesel is our friend!"
If none of these things comes to pass, I'll be tempted to stay home.

You know, you're right. Iraq is going real great, and I can't wait to dive right into the sequel (Iran) just as soon as we can start dropping the bombs.
You know, like in that old Beach Boys song. Now how did that go?

I didn't mean you, tigg... I meant the general tone is starting to slide.
Who woulda thunk this would be a harder thread to keep cool than the religious thread?
Screw you guys, I'm voting for Iuz. He promises not to kill me if I do.

As to politics in gaming, I've always noticed a lot of conservatives/republicans in the hobby. Which isn't necessarily weird, just not what I would have expected had I never started gaming.
I remember being called a socialist and what not in a group once when we realized we had way different outlooks on the world.
Interestingly, Gary Gygax was a big outspoken conservative. I never would have thought that, but I looked it up one day. Also, despite his (thankfully) stubborn insistence that bare-chested goddesses and references to devils and demons remain in the game during an era a lot of family and religious advocates were slandering the game as satanic, Gygax seemed to be a pretty openly religious guy. I've seen a reference to two to God and his faith.
I'm voting for Obama, btw.

It just keeps creeping up elsewhere.
I read a thread about "I'm out--I'm going to 4e" and it turns into a pissing contest about foreign trade and oil. And, sickest f#$@ing thing of all, I feel compelled to give my 2 cents!

Well, so long as he's lawful I guess you're okay. Although there are lots and lots of things that aren't technically killing ...

There once was a devil named Iuz
Who's platform consisted of firesHe burns for your vote
And says from the smoke
"I'm honest. Dare you call me a liar?"

Here's my view on all the anti-Bush sentiments. Let's just step back and let history judge him. You really can't get a feeling for a president until he's been out of office for a few years. Look at Truman. He had an extremely low popularity rating and now he is usually considered in about every historian's top ten presidents lists. The reason for the disparity is that people tend to get brainwashed by the media of the time. I know that I have problems with Bush but some of the things I hear like "Bush is Hitler" or "Bush determines his Middle East policies by the words of the Bible" are just not fair to him.

Sort of. He was a libertarian, though what I'd call a right-leaning one. I used to argue politics a lot on one of his mailing lists :)

As Ed Healy said to me regarding issues of an individual's politics or religion (and I do my best to quote), "Many of my best friends are ardent liberals, and yet we don't go 'round and 'round targeting our different opinions on each other. It's a matter of maturity."
I agree with the man. Respect the person you know to be wrong, and maybe they'll respect you for being so wrong. Otherwise, this could devolve into poorly reasoned rhetoric so quickly that we could easily have our new flame war, made to order.
I am capable of making fair judgements about politicians without waiting to see what other people think based on how things shake out given another 40-100 years of rhetoric and slanted opinions regarding the outcome of historical events yet to come. I've seen enough to make a judgement, and a judgement has been made. Whether for or against, the world spins on not giving a half a hampster turd what I think about anything.
People attribute the positives that come after a president they approve of to that president, even when the positives weren't a direct result of clear plan or policy. They do the same thing with negatives, attributing them to a president who had nothing directly to do with the negative. It's all so illogical and simplified. I can never talk politics with most people because, IMO, they often spew the bumper sticker language they've be programmed to speak, making the points they've been told to argue, and so their arguments are not self created rationales so much as viral memes. Red and Blue... you've been given your scripts. Enjoy. I'll be flipping through Yojimbo instead.
The wall fell in Berlin. Try hard enough and you can explain how the lead singer of the Scorpions somehow made it happen. Klaus Meine for president! Rock You Like a Hurricane would make an awesome inauguration song. Now if we could just get over that whole "born in the USA" stupilation.

I am voting Obama but I have a beef with him......
I really hate that the media is pretending that he is black. All I hear is 'possibly the first black president' and stuff like that but I mean really? Are we that desperate to make news and racial statements?
The dude was born to a Caucasian mother and raised in a Caucasian family.
He's half black, half white. Not the first 'black' president. The first Half black, half white president.
I got pissy when they focused on that several years back with Haley Berry winning something, it was all "oh, she's the first black actress to...... what a milestone!".
What if we only called Obama white? Blacks would be outraged that their race is being ignored in the man's makeup.
If he was half-Latino/half-white do you think they would be going through all this drama and calling him The First Latin President? Even if he didn't speak spanish? I don't know if it would even be mentioned much in that case, but why? It's still a racial milestone, right? Can someone explain the difference to me?
Also why is it legal to have a 'Black Entrepreneur' magazine but a 'White Entrepreneur' magazine would be racist?
The only way to end racism is to end it from both directions.
*dons his asbestos speedos*

Garydee wrote:...The reason for the disparity is that people tend to get brainwashed by the media of the time...The funny thing is, that everyone I know who doesn't rely on mainstream media thinks Bush is the most incompetent president Americans have ever elected.
Where do they get their news from then? Just curious.

Agreed. Dr. King isn't the only one who has this dream.

BBC news is fantastic. Don't knock it till you've seen it. They cover us better than we do. With more serious interest and compassion than you might imagine.
CNN is American Idol for people who like to be told what to say about presidents 'round the water cooler. It's not news, it's an emetic. Anyone still remember when they actually talked about more than five top stories a day?
Fox news? Well that's its own layer of insanity. Watch that for a week and you'll become as flexible as a yoga master, so proven when you find your head has become firmed lodged up your wazoo. I don't say that because it's conservative. I say that because it is hyperbolic manipulation beyond the pale.

I tend to get my news, opinion, and analysis from Daily Kos, Think Progress, Huffington Post, Crooks and Liars, Washington Post, and CNN. I also browse Google News, Yahoo! News and, pretty regularly, read through the most recent threads on Free Republic to see what the conversation is over there.
The interesting thing about that last one is it is, very generally speaking, essentially the same (types of) conversations as I read in those other places, but the names have been changed to, er ... well, they've been changed anyway :)

Sorry. ;) I honestly get more out of the news crawl below the screen than I do the coverage.
