I saw Metallica with Metal Church on the Master of Puppets tour in 1986. It it still my favorite show. Only two hundred people turned up. It was like having them play at a bar.
It made up for driving six hours that spring to see Ozzy/Metallica and having Oz cancel because of voice problems.
It would have been nice to see Burton play though. He died between the two shows.
Ha! I went to that Ozzy/Metallica concert around the time I was graduating from High School. Bragging rights for getting to see old Cliff pound on the bass before the bus accident [RIP]. Great concert!

Ok here goes,
During my senior year in high school Megadeth was touring with Stone Temple Pilots, a new band who wasnt really that good. The tour had a deal, if you donated X amount of canned goods to charity you got to meet the band during a meet and greet after the show. Three friends and I did this.
The show was pretty good, that new band STP, whom i thought wouldnt go anywhere, was brief and Megadeth kicked ass. After the show we waited and they put us in line. I was a diehard fan and being super nervous couldnt say anything when the guys came by one by one. Each bandmember, starting with Nick and moving through Marty, Dave, and Dave, asked if I was ok since I just stood there slackjawed. My friend Jim had on a Paw shirt, Mustaine inquired about the band before moving down the line to my friend Adam.
A slight aside, we used to roar like Chewbacca in high school for a brief period of time, for no real good reason, but we thought it was funny.
My friend Adam proceeded to roaring like Chewie and then asking Mustaine to join him in roaring it.The exact quote is
"HEY roar like Chewie!"
"what?"
adam roars, then says "chewie, chebacca, roar like him"
"nah man you do it better."
Mustaine stepped back slightly, a seriously strange look on his face, then moved on away.
So my only encounter with my hero involved Chewbacca and me not being able to speak to my idol. That being said the guys seemed genuine in their concern as to my well being so that was cool.
I couldnt resist telling this story, it must be riveting :) kinda like when people tell you their dreams
i still cant believe i thought STP was going to be a one hit wonder

I think Mustaine sounds like a cartoon villain... but it fits his music... He's definitely got a distinct vocal signature! Most importantly, he is one of the greatest writer/composers in metal, and some of his solos are absolutely incredible.
And I kinda like his vocals, honestly.
Also, while this is not going to win me many friends, I think pulling the drugs out of Megadeth didn't exactly improve their music.
I have to agree; putting Mustaine on that bus was the greatest thing for metal James and Lars ever did!
I like his vocals too; but I'm not going to say that he has a great vocal instrument. He just knows how to use the one he was given to the fullest. Don't shoot me, but I like a couple of tracks off of CTE. Mainly Psychotron and This Was My Life. Plus I really dug parts of Youthanasia, but I see that they were getting off message.
My fave song by them is actually: Angry Again from Last Action Hero soundtrack.
I do think they need to get Ellefson back. He was the Yang to Mustaine's Ying. I just don't think the band is the same without him. Ironically, Ellefson appeared as a speaking voice guest on the latest Dream Theater album on the song 'Repentance'.
What you said about drugs to Megadeth can also be said about booze and Metallica. I think the band was at its best when they were drinking their butts off. It was when Hetfield started down the road of self-reflection and sobriety that the fire went out of their music. Yeah, St Anger is a CD that I have listened to maybe three times (it's that bad). Load and REload maybe 7-8 times each. I try to stick to the Black album and before.
Anyway, time to crash.

I forgot totally about MD 45 mustaines side project..there are two versions, the original with Lee Ving, singer of Fear doing the vocals and mustaine doing Guitars, and the remaster with mustaine doing the vocal duties. The whole record is a punk type thing, with the song The Creed being a standout song..
In other band news did anybody else like Sacred Reich?

Ideas of bands for the Viking/Norweigian type metal with good vocals would be appreciated - and anything that resembles the Dream Theatre / Blind Guardian prog-rock trend.
Robert
Ive you havent't yet - try Therion, especially Deggial and Secret of the Runes (Deggial has a Song with Blind Guardians Hansi Kürsch doing the Vocals) and the "classic" Albums from Rage (Lingua Mortis, XIII).

So, I've created a Pandora station to address my metal needs during the day, and I thought I'd share:
It's a pretty cool service. Allows you customize the station based on your likes and dislikes. I've got a few others in my Empirical Radio line: Electro-industrial and Gothic Metal.

And Shiny....I am a HUGE KMFDM fan. The MDFMK album was such a great one..."Stare at the Sun"..."Rabblerouser." Excellent. Still, Nihil is their best. "Juke Joint Jezebel" is my favorite.
I actually haven't picked up the MDFMK album yet, but I listen to my bootlegs of "Adios", "WWIII", and "Nihil" quite often. Favorite songs off of any of their albums: "Juke Joint Jezebel"; "Free Your Hate"; "WWIII"; "ADIOS"; "Brute".

I call the growling vocal style 'Cookie Monster Metal". It took me awhile to get into it; and my wife absolutely hates it.
So grab your friends and instruments and start a metal band
Just sing about death, Egypt and wizards or rip off Ayn Rand
We’re coming to the end of the first verse…
Then comes the breakdown, a pretty chorus and then the second verse.
I know I just rhymed verse with verse
That’s because I’m so METAL, b#&, where’s your f**~ing purse?
BREAKDOWN!!! In this part it sounds like the singer wants to fight…
BREAKDOWN!!! Don’t be scared, the chorus will make it all alright
Metal by numbers, 1, 2, 3
Follow these rules and you will see
Cookie monster vocals or yell like a Wookiee
Metal by numbers, COOKIE, COOKIE, COOKIE
Metal by numbers, 1, 2, 3
THIS IS THE GAY PART, with melody
Even a baby could do it, just give it a try
Just sound like Maiden or Metallica or Every Time I Die
I have to change my voice to make me sound MAD!
If I tried to sing clean it would make your ears SAD!
This is the GANG VOCAL and I’ll tell you the TRUTH!
It’s four sweaty dudes yelling in a BOOTH!
Music really sucks now, posers and trendy FOOLS!
But compared to Coldplay and Nelly, EVEN S$%@TY METAL RULES!
It’s metal by numbers, it’s not arithmetic
John Mayer, Kelly Clarkson, they all can suck my PENIS!
BREAKDOWN!!! In this part it sounds like the singer wants to fight…
BREAKDOWN!!! Don’t be scared, the chorus will make it all alright
Metal by numbers, 1, 2, 3
Follow these rules and you will see
Cookie monster vocals or yell like a wookie
Metal by numbers, COOKIE, COOKIE, COOKIE
Metal by numbers, 1, 2, 3
THIS IS THE GAY PART, with melody
Even a monkey could do it, just give it a try
Copy Maiden or Metallica or Every Time I Die
Here it comes! C’mon! All Right!
ARE YOU ALMOST READY??
Dammit! I missed it!
This is the mosh part! So, MOSH!!!
Or don’t. It’s your call. I just stand in the back and try not to get hit. Watch out for the shirtless white trash guys. They’ll punch you and they stink. And look out for the screamo kids practicing their karate kicks. Dude, you look gaytarded. And watch out for the giant Mexican guy - he looks really pissed. I wish everybody would put their shirts back on, it’s kind of gross. Is this part still going? Here comes the lead break! Oh, not yet. Here it comes... here it comes... GO!
Metal by numbers, 1, 2, 3
Follow these rules and you will see
Cookie monster vocals or yell like a wookie
Metal by numbers, COOKIE, COOKIE, COOKIE!
Metal by numbers, 1, 2, 3
THIS IS THE GAY PART, with melody
Even a retard could do it, JUST GIVE IT A TRY!
Steal from Maiden or Metallica or Every Time I Die

And actually I haven't listened to Black Flag's canon, I just have a few bootleg mp3s.
In the beginning, there was nothing. Then there was the Flag.

I'm probably going to get some flack for this, bhese days I've been listening to lots of symphonic metal - stuff like Therion, Nightwish, Within Temptation, Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, and Lacuna Coil.
But I also love the classics - Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, early Metallica, Hawkwind, Motorhead, Pantera, Slayer.
Incidentally, does anybody else out there like Orange Goblin?

Kruelaid |

I actually like Countdown to Extinction.
It's catchy. But something changed, there was a personality to the earlier Megadeath lyrics and vocals that evaporated with countdown and I just never got into it. I don't hate it, and don't turn it off, but there's just something that wasn't there anymore.

Ooh, I too am occasional listener of metal...never quite got into those Metallica/Megadeth things though.
My preferences are either classics like Maiden, Priest, Sabbath etc. or weird atmospheric noise of black metal, preferably lo-fi. Burzum and Darkthrone, and been getting into Bathory lately too...and of newer stuff Agalloch, Sunn O))), Leviathan and artists like that.
And doom industrial greats like Brighter Death Now, In Slaughter Natives, Valefor...
Somehow the middle ground never quite interested me.
I didn't yet spot anyone mention the greatness that is early Savatage either. Or Saint Vitus.

Good metal acts I've seen in the last year or two:
Opeth (a couple times. Great band)
Throwdown
Killswitch Engage
In Flames
Nevermore
Fireball Ministry
Pelican
Mastodon
All good stuff.
Other great bands:
Candlemass
Celtic Frost
Amon Amarth (If you want viking metal, get Oden on Our Side).
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth
Iron Maiden (of course)
Arch Enemy
Nile
Dimmu Borgir
At the Gates
Tiamat
Rammstein
Therion
Theatre of Tragedy (first two CDs)
Good stuff that is more prog than metal:
3
Dream Theatre
Spock's Beard
Porcupine Tree
Riverside

For a kind of soft Viking Metal / Goth / Folk there is also
Leave's Eye [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VpcRWA_-3jw]
(Liv Kristine, former female Vocalist of Theatre of Tragedy and the Atrocity mastermind Alexander Krull)
)You can get this video dor free on their website, so I guess posting the link (yet, my web fu is to weak to link) does no harm.

Ah, yes....here it is....ManOWar's "Warriors of the World United"
Good stuff.
For the Gothic Metal types, I'd also recommend:
Lacuna Coil
In Tenebris
Paradise Lost
Darkseed
69 Eyes (not their newer stuff, though)
Lacrimas Profundere
The Birthday Massacre

Hey Greer! OH YEAH Loudness! "Lock an Loll Clazy Nights!" Akira Takasaki and Minoru Niihara are still amazing. (though Soldier of Fortune, Ghetto Machine, and Dragon all have about only 2-3 songs that I can still listen to).
Other J-Metal
Anthem-Headstrong
EZO-Flashback Heart Attack
Luna Sea-Shade
Electric Eel Shock-Scream For Me
more j-rock
Malice Mizer-Kyomu No Naka De Yuugi
Pillows-Hybrid Rainbows
Shonen Knife-Tortoise Brand Pot Cleaner
Puffy Ami Yumi-Teen Titans Theme
Also great to see Orange Goblin mentioned Scorpionica was the first bit of theirs I heard and obsessed over! Love 'em!
Savatage too! Though my favorite is Gutter Ballet (which, ironically is a symphony/metal combo that I railed against in my last post here...what can I say, I have complicated rules...or I'm two people. Especially love MY ALL TIME FAVORITE POWER BALLAD When the Crowds Are Gone and Thorazine Shuffle)
Sorry, got to reprint some lyrics
I never wanted to know
Never wanted to see
I wasted my time
Till time wasted me
I never wanted to go
Always wanted to stay
'Cause the person I am
Are the parts that I play
So I plot and I plan
Hope and I scheme
To the lure of a night
Filled with unfinished dreams
I'm holding on tight
To a world gone astray
As they charge me for years
I can no longer pay

Wow! Alot of good bands mentioned here - most gamers I know dont like metal.
I have been a huge Judas Priest fan (WARNING OLD GEEZER ALERT!) since I first heard 'Unleashed in the East' on some friday night metal show. This of course led me to Iron Maiden, Saxon, Black Sabbath and Rainbow/Dio. Lately I have really been into Iced Earth, Dragon Force and Deathklok.
Bands I have not seen here:
- Halford
- Diamond Head
- UFO
- MSG (Michael Schenker (?) Group)
- Mercyful Fate/King Diamond
- Queensryche
- Uriah Heep
- Manowar (really cool in a CHEESY kind of way)

Check out Blind Guardian's CD Nightfall Over Middle Earth. You won't be sorry.
In fact, here's is a link to the song Nightfall. The video is fan-made :)

Also, the guys from Iced Earth and Blind Guardian got together and made a CD under the band name Demons and Wizards. That's cool too.
I checked out the video - that was pretty good - I have/had a demons and wizards CD someplace - it more than likely fell through a color pool in my house

Green Jello (or Green Jelly if you only know them from after the change).
Cereal Killer was a fun album.

Yah! Green Jelly! We had that CD on all the time when I was in the army. My favourite is this little ditty, though.
Also, if this isn't the best video ever, I don't know what is. Fear the toucan!

I used to have the tape they made that had most of the videos on it and good lord that was fun to watch! I haven't seen Electric Harley House of Love in a loooong time! Good to see that there are some who remember that stuff.

There is - it is called The hell of steel. As a compilation, it's not all that great, even though it includes a rather corny version of "Heart of steel" sung in German. If I were you, I'd get their live albums Hell on wheels and Hell on stage instead.
EDit - while I haven't listened to it, the setlist of their new live album looks pretty good. I'll have to check this one out...

Agreed with the live albums. As for the their new life album - the first of the 2 cd's is great and most of the songs aren't on the "hell on" albums. The second cd - not so much. Many samples and even chorus lines come from disk - it doesn't even remotely feel like a live album (I'm not whining about their newer songs - I like their latest album - only this live versions don't work).

Okay, I apologize again for the plug (last one, I swear!), but I'm super excited and this seemed like the thread to celebrate in. I just checked this morning, and my band's new EP (Shadow at Morning - Ghosts and Legions) is up on iTunes and Amazon.
Mmm... pseudo-legitimacy via the internet....
Don't apologize and by all means don't let it be the last one (o.k. maybe the last one for this EP - which I'll get - but when you finished material like this LET US KNOW!!!

No I mean, I like you as a Paizo editor and I don't want you to jump ship to go around the country tossing bologna onto groupies!, not that you shouldn't count on your music to make a living....
;P

Don't worry - when you've got a day job this awesome, it's pretty hard to give it up! Fortunately, Paizo's supportive of my metal endeavors, and what are vacation days for if not gigging?
Hope you metal warriors enjoy the tunes - I'd be very curious to hear what folks think of them (though I'm prepared for the "Hey, why don't you stop screaming all the time?" suggestion :). My current favorite song is "The Gunslinger," but I think all four have their moments.

Is Rollins Band metal?
I'm sorry, but Rollins Band is metal. At least "Weight" and "Come in and Burn" is. "Nice" had a horn section on it, so lets not go there.
Anyone mention the 80's metal band Omen? Their album "Battle Cry" is awesome. Full of fantasy goodness.
Necrophagia, "Season of the Dead" with Phil Ansomo(sp?) on guitar a few years before Pantera.
Edit: He wasn't on this album but on their second in the late 90s after pantera started.
