Since for some of us subscribers paizo.com is our FLGS, it would be great to receive a copy of the FRPGDay product in our June shipments.
Wouldn't it?
Just saying,
No pressure or anything.
:)
Not the worst idea, but unfortunately, not possible this year, and probably not ever. Almost all of the print run for this product is already in the hands of retailers all over the world. We kept a small number to sell to customers starting on Monday. The sales of those small number allows us to participate in the program in the first place. To print enough to participate in Free RPG Day AND send them out to all our subscribers would make it cost prohibitive. And I think that Free RPG Day is a cool enough program that I wouldn't want to risk it.
We try to do cool things for our Pathfinder subscribers already, like sending out the free Player's Guides.

I havn't seen anything on this, so I figured I would bring it to light.. Last year free RPG day cost $30 for a FLGS to be involved. This year it cost $90..
that tripling of the price made all 6 stores that are within driving distance that did it last year laugh at me when i asked if they were doing it this year.

Alas, I have a FLGS here in town . . . but one that is not participating in Free PRPG Day
Why? WHY? WHY?!

Of course, this year they would be getting something like 5 times the amount of free product that than they got last year, thus the increase in cost. I got a look at the packages that the retail store would be getting and it was impressive. And $90 is nothing if you think about the ability to use this to draw people to your store. What marketing program could you buy that costs less than $90 that would draw as many people to your store for a day?
Btw, participation by retailers this year is way up, almost 3 times as many retailers are participating. So many, in fact, that the program sold out a couple of months ago. :)

Fantastic. I was just going to go for Revenge of the Kobold King, but I'm going to take a good look around! Also, sorta off-topic, is there ever going to be a chance that last year's Free RPG ever comes out in print again? It's the only Module that will be missing in my collection, and I'm sorta bummed about that.

Bray Abbitt |
I'm a little bummed. There are some nice selections but not a single store in Metro Atlanta (9th largest metro area in the US) is participating this year. With current gas prices it is much cheaper just to order the things I know I want. Which means I won't be getting samples of new things to try out.

We're not going to say never, but we don't have any current plans to reprint it. (I could imagine some future 64-pager that takes D0, D1, and D1.5 and updates them all to Pathfinder RPG rules... assuming all three of those go out of print.) But that would just make Nick Logue's head get even bigger.

Just going to throw this out there: I would buy that.
Being a completionist sucks when you find out something went out of print. At least with that product, I could say I have a print version of said adventure, even if it's not the original.

Not to be a Judas, but Amazon has Crown of the Kobold King. That is where I got my copy of Crown of the Kobold King, I was also late getting into the Gamemastery modules now I am slowing getting them all.

I feel your pain. I'm considering making the trek all the way down to Newnan tomorrow just to see what's there, but it's disheartening. Though to my knowledge, downtown Atlanta has zero gaming stores and the metro Atlanta area only has four, and even that is only if you count Duluth as part of metro Atlanta.

I considered that too or heading over to Athens. I'm fairly certain the reason it is not being done is there was not a good return on investment last year. all the stores I know of just put stacks out by the front door and people gobbled them up in the first few minutes of the day. I was the only person I know that got anything because I was there at store opening. Everyone I spoke to noted the same thing except one store which limited people to two items.
In any case they could have made an event around it but it seemed utterly unexciting other than picking up free stuff.

Hmm, last year I went to Titan Comics in College Park and didn't have any trouble getting stuff a few hours after they opened. It wasn't a big event, but it was exciting for me since I'd never been there before and I was impressed by their selection.

Shadowborn |

I'll be heading to the local gaming shop for free RPG day, because I just can't turn down free stuff.
Notice I didn't say "friendly." I don't think they are. In fact, since the change in management a few years back, they've become downright snotty and condescending; hence the reason I order things online from Paizo...or get discounted books from Hastings.

Man this really sucks. I live in Dallas, GA. The closest store to me is Newnan that is about 75 miles away. Savannah and Athens are out of the question. I guess I'll keep my fingers crossed I can get a copy on Monday. It is already bad enough I am going to miss the con exclusive at Gencon this year. I have every other Paizo D&D module so I guess I'll be up all night Sunday to Monday morning to get my copy. Any idea what time they will be available for order Monday morning?

Another threadjack. Is it an issue of time or money with GenCon? Me and a buddy are heading up so at the very least we can carpool, might be able to split a room (got to check)...anyway if you are interested email me at the above address.

Woot!
I was recruited to run Revenge of the Kobold King by my FLGS (Dragon's Lair, San Antonio, TX)
What was cool, I went there tonight, mentioned Pathfinder and the manager went to the back to get me a copy! The new brand recognition seems to work. Will run 3.5 or PFRPG.
I also hit them up about Pathfinder Society...

He's not talking about Crown—that's still in print. He was talking about D0: Hollow's Last Hope, which was last year's Free RPG Day adventure. It's out of print, though we offer a free PDF of it.

I live in Dallas, Ga as well and was very pissed that Dr. No's wasn't participating. Free Comic day was a blast there, I wonder if it's all the card gamers that mob the place.

Just picked up free game day stuff at Patch and Crow's nest here in Manhattan KS. I have to say that Revenge of the Kobold King was THE best product of any of the others. Even the D&D 4e product was underwhelming though the free mini was a nice touch. RotKK was also the only full color product available in the freebees. I just want to say that no matter what you guys do whether it is making adventures, putting together sourcebooks, pewter minis, or just a free 16 page adventure for Free Game day, you consistently set the bar and lead the pack. Well done!!!!

How many total will be available for purchase (I know one per person. I mean total number available)? That is in the middle of the work day. I'd hate to get home 5 hours later to find they are all sold out.

![]() |

I all of NYC, only one store was participating. When I went in, the store was empty and they still had a full box of free stuff, but I wasn't able to get just anything. I had to roll a d20 and that determined what publisher I got stuff from. I ended up with a stapled booklet of what looks to be home-printed b/w module for a system I've never even heard of. I was pretty disappointed. Guess I'll be supporting Paizo through my purchase online on Monday!

We don't release numbers like that, but I wouldn't worry about it too much—we had copies of last year's Free RPG Day module available for 9 or 10 months, so it's pretty unlikely that they'll sell out in 5 hours this year.

![]() |
I happen to be lucky. In my area (Dallas, TX), eight or nine stores are participating. I went to one and found a disinterested clerk who when I asked him if I could take two of the products out on the table, shrugged and said 'Take 'em all if you want 'em'. So I did. One of everything.
Yay!
Revenge of the Kobold King, by the way, is very well done.

My family had a trip to Green Bay today. My lovely wife mapped our trip which included 3 FLGS on the way. 6 Stores in all of Wisconsin participated and I hit half of them. The Paizo module of course had the best production values that I saw today. In addition to the Revenge of the Kobold King, I picked up campaign settings for Dungeon Crawl Classics and Iron Heroes. I also nabbed a C&C quick game.
This was such a fun day.

The two guys that opened the FLGS had no idea what Free RPG Day was. The owner came in later that day and finally got an answer for me. They pulled out of Free RPG Day because of the $90 investment. Apparently they had too much stuff left over from last year because it didn't drawn enough people and they didn't make any money, so they weren't going to spend so much more.
Sucks because I really wanted D1.5 and the Wizards module. Now I need to fight on ebay for the Wizards one.

Well, today was a good day for me. Not only did PF # 10, the PF Gazetter, and Red Raven come in today, but I got Revenge of the Kobold King from the FLGS that was doing the Free RPG day there. I also manage to nab two old modules, D1-2 Descent into the Depths of the Earth and D3 Vault of the Drow. YAY!!!

![]() |

Free RPG day was great! I'm glad we had it this year! It works out for everyone, really, since while I was getting my Free RPGs, I saw the Curse of the Crimson Throne and Adventure Gear 2 Item Cards, so I picked them up! :)
While leafing through all the free modules/booklets that I got, I have to say that I am consistently impressed with the quality that Paizo produces. Not to disparage the other stuff that I got, I'm sure it's all neat stuff (I plan on reading it all), but just from the presentation, Revenge of the Kobold King was the nicest looking product in the pack, even nicer than the WotC adventure.
And considering it's a Nic Logue adventure, I have a feeling the actual adventure will be just as high-quality. In fact, I'm going to go read it right now.
Thanks for the free stuff, Paizo!

![]() |

Revenge of the Kobold king is awesome!
I have to report that Paizo outdid itself again with the Free RPG product. It was by far and away the highest production value of any of the other freebies, and the only one that I saw in color. Artwise, the Harn product came a close second, and then the Song of Ice and Fire preview was also well done. I haven't looked through the 4e item since another DM runs in my regular group and I'll give it to him (it did come with a dungeon tile thingy though)
Also, I ran the adventure as a demo for the store that participated for some players who had heard about Paizo and wanted to play a Pathfinder game. The branding is very, very catchy. They really enjoyed it, though we only got through the second encounter. I allowed the participants to pick through the 8 stated iconics (I bumped Selah, Ezra, Lem, and Harsk to 5th from their 4th level incarnation in River of Darkness). The players chose Valero, Kyra, Merisel, and Ezra.

I heard this from several stores...the one thing those stores either didn't notice or did not realize was that the price tripled but the quantity of giveaways and promotion backing the event quadrupled.
We always tell consumers...if they want a store to participate, let us know and we will contact them.

Unfortunately, we cannot control what the stores do with the freebies.
In terms of that store's experience last year...the giveaways were a lot less than this year as 2007 was year one (unproven to anyone). In 2008, the stores that had the most success were the ones that had gaming during the day of the event and spiced things up in the store...like some stores had a 10% off all RPGs all day...another gave food and drink to attendees.
