Like Stephen Colbert says, "The Market has Spoken"

Quick search of Ebay (the one true market of supply and demand) reveals that Pathfinder #2, Skinsaw Murders is selling for $30 and the 4E PHB/MM/DMG are each selling for $20 (most of which, without any bidders, most of those with bidders are closer to $10).

The market has spoken. Pathfinder is worth more then 4E.

On the other hand, Amazon.ca has "The Skinsaw Murders" as its #74,966 best-selling book and the 4th edition books are at #9. But what do a bunch of hockey-loving, donut-munching hosers know, anyways? ;-)

Amazon's best selling rankings aren't very reliable in the long run since they're all about the NOW (read: this week). And the 4e PH is more like 27th on Amazon.com as of a couple days ago... well behind a bunch of Tim Russert books.

That's because they desperatly try to minimize tier losses.

And probably because you can get them new on amazon for $21.

Man, those are some weird rankings:

PF1: #104,607
2: #75,176
3: #77,188
4: #130,972
5: #145,980
6: #127,507
7: #10,130
8: #295,819
9: #219,689
10: #193,250

RotR Map Folio: #10,144

I also like this note:

Oddly, the only place I can find that phrase is in their sponsored links in our Pathfinder products!

There's a difference between "worth more value" and "selling more units". McDonalds sells more hamburgers then Nissan sells more SUVs, but their SUVs cost more. Ergo, the Pathfinder is worth more then the WotC hamburger.

I mean McDonalds Hamburgher. Yea, that's what I meant.

Are you trying to imply that WotC merchandise is loaded with filler and un-appetizing, unsavory by-products with no nutritional value what-so-ever?

If so... please carry on. <Grin>

I remember when Games Workshop released their own version of a tactical game/RPG hybrid - it was called Mordheim, and it created quite a buzz for awhile around the LGS. It seems that the fast-paced and simple rules and lesser RP element was just what people were craving, and everyone was playing it like crazy those first few months.

Had Amazon or E-Bay been around back then, I'm sure the game would have produced some pretty impressive numbers in the first week or so as well.

A year later, I couldn't find anyone to play with.

Lesson learned - while its fun to ride out a fad, a rulesystem needs to be interesting to have staying power.

Lets see what 4e is selling for this time next year.. if its still selling at all. ;)

Mordheim rocks, I have a half dozen friends that I still play it with. In fact, we were all just talking about playing it again the other day. I always loved putting together my own terrain and I got really good at painting the minis.

In fairness, mordhiem was not a hybrid game and in no way had any roleplaying element, it was a skirmish campaign game, it is also still played as many games clubs. I beleive you may be thinking of warhammer quest however, which reallydid sink without a trace.

There is a hint in the air of putting a contract out on one of the Pathfinder writers to drive up the value of the series. Apparently Pett feels you might not be too averse to glory, even of the posthumous kind. ;-)

Why would anyone buy a 4th edition on eBay? If I were to get it I would drop $60 on Amazon and get all three plus free shipping. Doesn't make any sense to buy from someone on eBay.

I don't think this means anything.

I did see a bunch of copies at the Local Barnes and Noble along with a much abused copy of keep on the shadowfell which looked quite anemic for $30. The quick play rules made sense when the module was to be released a month before the game but they didn't release it until the week before the game was out and are worthless.

we got shadowfell 5 weeks before the PHB et all came out

I think the major problem with Mordheim as a durable gaming system was that GW stopped supporting it. The system was that, in addition to Warhammer and 40K, they'd cycle through a third core game range every few years. So you'd see reissues of Necromunda, Bloodbowl, Epic and so forth every so often, along with newer games, thus guaranteeing the occasional influx of new blood and enthusiasm.

Unfortunately, these days that third core game slot is permanently filled by Lord of the Rings. Which, I can only assume, makes more money. It just goes to show that the quality of a gaming system is pretty much meaningless when it comes to the fiscal bottom line.

On the plus side however, since they're no longer producing any of the older games, GW has made the rules freely available here. A blatant attempt to sell more miniatures to people wanting to play them no doubt, but hey, free stuff.

Well... that doesn't neccesarily mean anything. I'm not saying you're automatically wrong, of course. This could even be a humour thread and I'm missing it, and I'm just a lowly drop-out, but...

If WotC prints 100,000 books and 20% of those are being resold that means that only 80,000 people want their books and 20,000 are reselling, which would make e-bayers sell them cheaply.

If Paizo prints 10,000 books and only 5% of those are being resold that would mean that only 9,500 people want their books and the other 500 don't, which would keep the value somewhat in tact.

Of course that shows that people are actually buying the books, but it doesn't really give any indication as to how many people want them. It only tells us that a -few- people -really- want them.

Overall, I don't have much understanding of the business, so I have no idea where the EDITION WARZ!!1! will lead, but I think ebay resell value is a poor model to guage success with.

I'm personally a fan of diversity in systems and hope they can both find their niche in the market.

Edit: Thought your handle was DrMcCoy and referred to you as a doctor. Now I've saved myself the embarassment and come clean anyway so I'm not sure why I did it.

Aside from their McGriddles, I can barely stomach their food. They must use less lard in it than the rest of their menu.

What little fast food I eat comes in three general forms: McDonald's Chicken McNuggets, Wendy's Spicy Chicken Sandwich, and Popeye's Fried Chicken. If I'm going to eat a fast food burger, I usually prefer Burger King. I do eat Subway, but since they advertise as being healthy, I don't really count them as fast food.

Sovereign Court

I cut out fast food altogether about 4-5 years ago and it made a big difference with weight and even energy levels.

I did notice that Amazon already has used 4E books for sale. That speaks volumes to me.

The key word here is "advertise" - it's quite possible to get more gut busting food there than several other chains, if you're not careful. Even more unrelated, I don't understand how they don't have swiss, cheddar, or even mozzarella cheese as options.*

-Aah, how about Cheddar?
-Well, we don't get much call for it around here, sir.
-Not much ca--It's the single most popular cheese in the world!
-No 'round here, sir.

What a crazy Subway! I've never seen a subway without those cheeses! (Though, actually, I don't think they usually have mozzarella)

And it's true, you can load up and have a truly fattening sub, or you can have a nice turkey sub on whole wheat, it's like anything else: the individual's choice.

The thread was humorous. Yes, 4E is going to sell more considering that WotC 3.5 D&D was 50% of the market. And even if 40% of the 3.5 fanbase doesn't doesn't like/refuses to play the game (which every online poll is showing, even on pro-4E sites) , that's still 30% of the market. They're still #1 (and that's not including those that bought the book to "confirm their worst fears", "steal stuff for their homebrewed 3.5 game", and just buy whatever WotC churns out regardless if they ever use it). There's no arguing that.

And don't worry about calling me Dr McCoy. I get called that alot, along with Bones (reference Star Trek's Dr. McCoy) and DM McCoy as well. D is my first initial, McCoy my last name.

The Subways here do not carry Cheddar cheese either. Wish they did... and speaking of fattenig up on SUbway let's here it for the footlong Meatball Sub!

So, ummmmmm the market yeah that is what we were talking about.

You lose weight eating Subway because THEY DON'T PUT ANYTHING ON THEM!

Quiznos FTW!

Now, did someone say I could get a Cheesburger on E-Bay?

I know they sold a peirogi for something like $2000, but it looked like Jesus...

I think I had French Fry that looked like Ellen Degenrous once...

What were we talking about again???

It's not that weird when you realize that those are rankings right now based on some very recent interval of activity rather than a long-term or all-time ranking.

I've heard that from numerous Subway employees.

For a while there in high school I lived off that meatball sub.
