I'm twitching here, must post...

7+7+5+3+0-2 = 20
then I add the new human racial bonus to Dex and I get
15,17,14,13,10,8
or at least thats the way I think it works?

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, unless you had changed something when I first looked through all the char sheets I added up the stat bonuses and it looked right to me.

Dannie, you might not have noticed it from the alpha, but all races have a total +2 mod now, so humans get a +2 in whatever stat they want.

Ahh, chalk that up to human error. You are indeed correct and I didn't see humans got a +2.

No harm was meant. :) Forgive the Alpha newbie.

I'll jump in the way of a potentially killing blow for ya Jinn as penance.

sorry for the short posts - they will most likly continue throughout the weekend - I'm having car troubles and things that have taken a lot of time have come in to work

Male Human Paladin 1

A quick note, I'm leaving tomorrow to spend a weekend with extended family. I should have internet access, but I don't know if I'll be able to post more often then once a day. I'll be back in my home ground on Monday.

Liberty's Edge

Sounds good everyone, real life does come up and I appreciate at least the heads ups so that we know what to expect from each other. I myself am slow on most sundays since I have a tabletop game then, but I'll pose early and late those days.

Jereth, Have fun with your family. And Tamai, I hope that the car troubles clear up soon, those are always rough.

-Tarlane

Aasimar

Saturday's are a slower day for me due To Rockband/Table_Top games we play. (Playing Dannie's brother in a game right now, which is interesting.)

I'll pop in and check the thread though, I'm looking forward to the next few posts.

Aasimar

Looks like our Paladin was watching the butterflies a little to intently huh? Hee Hee!

1 on spot than a 2 on init?

D-

Male Human Paladin 1

What can I say, they're shiny. Oooooo, look at the pretty colors...

Aasimar

I'm known for failing most when it counts though, such bad luck with dice rolling. Almost all my tabletop characters have failed a save or die whenever it happened.

So at least this is only a minor set back :)

D-

Liberty's Edge

I thought he got a 22 on init, not a 2. Looks to me like he was zoned out for the butterflies, but when it was time for action he is ready to go.

That's kind of why I was amazed. I mean, what are the odds of rolling a natural 1 and then a natural 20 right after that?

I know! It's some kind of omen! Now if only I could figure out what it means... ;)

Oh I thought it was a 2! heh. I was thinking thats unlucky.

it means stay out of battle the first round so that you don't keep doing the see-saw

The odds were 1/400

If any of you want a little auditory feeling for this scene, Samhaine on another thread made an mp3 version of the goblin song, available Here

PandaGaki also created a version, both With Screams and Without

When it's my init I'll be moving closer.

They need to make it so that the [pre] or [code] tags work on this site so that maps like this one can look right. owell maybe i can request it some where.

Aasimar

I was thinking a chessboard layout may be easier

horizontal lines are A-Z, AA-ZZ
vertical lines 1-100000

kinda thing

So you can say I'm in D10 I move up 5 spaces to D5 kinda thing.

If you need something made, I'm a photoshop wiz.

Liberty's Edge

I'm an awful artist, but have done a bunch of cad, so as long as its layouts like a map then I normally do alright. I just was at work earlier, so I wasn't able to make a real map. I'll try and whip one up for you guys and probably use maptools or the like so you can see where you are all positioned comparatively on it.

It is tough making a map on the board though, characters are not equal size like they are in notepad fonts, and if you try and put more then one space it only recognizes one(and a space can't be the first thing in a line)

-Tarlane

Liberty's Edge

Question, does everyone have access to a spreadsheet program of somekind, whether excel or open office, or the like? I have maps already for most major encounters, but ones like this I would normally just draw on a battlemat and that may be an easy way to keep track of it. If we all have access, then it is easy to do the placement on our own sheets and adjust as things come up.

Just wanted to get an idea of a grid. I might look into googleapps spreadsheet program since its online and I'm pretty sure it allows you to share sheets and that might be a good way to do a visual on quick or unexpected fights.

-Tarlane

Liberty's Edge

Alright guys, I just set up a googleapps thing so we can give that something of a try. Still going to have to get the hang of it, but here is a link to the page.

http://docs.google.com/a/wayfinderwiki.com/#all

I created each of you an account:

jereth
jinn
damia
dannie
tamai

And all of your passwords are currently set to 'runelord' without the quotes.

I have whiped together a quick spreadsheet in there that is just a five minute thing but I will make it better shortly, just a good way to test if it works.

Tell me what you all think

-Tarlane

Changed the color of the word table from black to white was having problems reading it off the dark background color. Looks good though thanks.

Liberty's Edge

Great, I'll see what I can do to make it prettier in the morning, but I'll probably be gone the rest of the night. Please, do all feel free to chime in either with praise or criticism.

I did just notice that if more then one of us is logged into the page at the same time it gives a chat feature and I believe we can see changes near real time, thats pretty neat.

Aasimar

This google map works fine! I can understand it way easier.

Male Human Paladin 1

I had a thought that I wanted to share. On play by post games combats tend to be very slow. One thing that I’ve done in the past is that instead of everyone waiting their turn to post in imitative order the whole group posts whenever they can, then the DM does a summery post; wither on a first come first served basis, not my favorite, or just goes over everything in Init order. The idea being that nobody would have to wait for anyone else to post. Of course, this puts a bit more of a burden on the DM so it is a matter of taste. Just thought I’d throw the idea out there in case it was something you might be interested in. I’ve got no problem with the current pace though so don’t worry about me either way.

Liberty's Edge

I'm perfectly fine with that idea as well, Jereth. It is basically just everyone doing what Tamai did when he realized he was going to be gone for the evening.

I don't mind keeping track so I can order things, I think that the biggest problem I can see is that you aren't always going to be sure of what the person before you has done before you take your action, so you are giving up a little bit of customization in return for things being faster. If that is ok for everyone then we can certainly go that way.

My question then would be how everyone feels about if something changes after you have declared your action, do you want me to try and adapt your action(if I think I can) or do you want me to wait until you repost? For example, if someone declared they were going to attack the injured goblin, but he dropped before their turn came up, should I automatically assume they aim at the next most likely target in range, or should I wait and let them adjust their action?

I don't mind adapting to whatever everyones preference is.

-Tarlane

Male Human Paladin 1

Slightly off topic, but I wanted to let you know that in four hours I'm going to be leaving on a six hour trip. In case my turn comes up again during that time feel free to NPC me. Jereth simply intends to line up a Charge using his lance. I'm trying to void ride checks when I can though. Except for the use of the Mounted Combat feat anyway.

Liberty's Edge

I'm about to be heading to my tabletop game myself, so I'll be gone until this evening myself. Everyone can feel free to post their turns and I'll order them tonight.

-Tarlane

Male Gnome Ranger 1

Tarlane - although its too late now, I found the fan made maps I was talking about - you can even see the dead dog in them (there is a slight spoiler in the second one for anyone who hasn't read/played past the first fight sequence) Maps

You can adapt my posts however you want, either due to circumstance (IE my target died) or to better the story.

If I think there is a possibility my action is going to be invalid before it happens, I will usually either do a OOC portion with what my second option is

Aasimar

Whatever speeds up combat is fine by me. I don't mind minor changes etc to actions or moves. Just don't talk for me :) That's my job.

Aasimar

Unless the goblin moves into a range that makes me have to do a concentration roll, my next move is simply to heal Damia.

(as I jumped the DM's flavor text after Damia's strike.)

Aasimar

Jereth:
I got the distinct impression your horse will have many interesting things to say to me when I cast Speak with Animals later on myself.

So be forewarned that is my intent at some point. Nature power!
D-

Male Human Paladin 1

Hmm, that's the second time I've rolled a nat 20 and then a nat 1, and now a second nat 1 with the damage. Fascinating. Anyway, I've added Alana's stats to my character sheet. Feel free to let me know if changes are needed.

Liberty's Edge

Tamai,

I did see those a long time ago, and I wish I had spotted them again before I put up my cheesy map of things since my placement of some of the objects described conflicts with theirs I wouldn't want to try and transfer straight over, but I will likely use the other one for the second encounter that way we can see what works best for us. The google docs thing works well for everyone being able to move around their characters on their own, but I would like to be able to be more visual in some things as well. We'll see what works out best, but its good to know we have a back up for when combat starts that I simply wasn't expecting.

Dannie,

I can imagine his horse certainly does have some stories to tell, though I can also see it not being the most friendly sort towards you as it seemed a bit jealous. I have an amusing image of some sort of competition forming(at least in its mind) between the two of you.

Jereth,

The die roller, doesn't seem to like giving you much in the way of middle ground, does it? I suppose that the benefit at least in this case is that the 20 came up first so you scored a solid hit, even if thats with minimum damage.

-Tarlane

Aasimar

Hey Tarlane,

Was I OK to assume "to hit" spells that require a hit roll of being able to crit on a 20?

Edit: I'll explain to the horse I only like girls. /smirk

Once we have some down time I'll try my luck talking with Alana. That horse has secrets I know it!

D-

Male Human Paladin 1

Tarlane; Quite. I'm listing it under Funny Moments that Seem to Work Out. Anybody want to place a bet on whether my next roll is a 20 or a 1? ;)

Dannie; I'm looking forward to the horse discussion. Puts 'straight from the horse's mouth' in a new light.

Quick question, do you want me to provide Alana's dialog and thoughts or would you like to do that Tarlane?

Aasimar

I see a 16 in your immediate future.

Liberty's Edge

Dannie,

If a spell has an attack roll it certainly is crit-able.

And Jereth, I wouldn't mind you continuing on with Alana's personality. Though she hasn't been given an actual voice yet, you have already done a good job of showing her attitude and such and I don't have any problem with you Rping out any conversations from her end.

-Tarlane

Male Human Paladin 1

Dannie; Mmmmm 16. Chubby Bunny anyone?

Tarlane; Thank you. I shall do my best to keep things interesting and consistent.

Liberty's Edge

I may have totally missed the reference, but when you say chubby bunny I instantly think of seeing how many marshmellows you can put in your mouth and still say that.

-Tarlane

Male Human Paladin 1

You got it! You get cake.

Male Human Paladin 1

Hey Dannie, you were right. There was a 16 in my near future.
Attacking with Lance (1d20 4=16

Edit to add: Two of them actually.
Ride check to negate hit against Alana (1d20 5=21))

Aasimar

I spook my D&D group by calling dice rolls, sometimes I see the result, I saw a 16 for ya for some reason. I was hoping 20 though. I get more right than wrong, so it's a minor parlor trick at best.

You know you want to scoop me up heroicly now and drop me off in time to save whoever that is, my guess is Aldern as he said he had a dog. I will feel honest shame if he dies and I let him run off alone, darn game drawing emotion!

How dare you Tarlane!

Male Human Paladin 1

I love the dramatics of your proposed action Dannie. I'm not sure how it would work though. I'm thinking a ride check from both of us perhaps? Or would that be a strength check?

Edit to add: My DMing instincts are coming out. Unless you disagree Tarlane I'd say it would be two ride checks, one from each of us, at a DC 10. If both pass then you can mount up as a free action similar to the mounting rules in the PHB. If either one of us fails then I need to stop next to you and allow you to mount up normally. What do you think?

I'd love to use my Handle Animal I think I can "push" his horse to pull it off, using handle Animal and Wild Empathy.

(this is one of the uses of handle Animal)

“Push” an Animal DC 25 (If Jereth assists, we can drop that by 2, which in theory I can make. The DC is 10 if Alana has been trained for quick mount.)

To push an animal means to get it to perform a task or trick that it doesn’t know but is physically capable of performing. This category also covers making an animal perform a forced march or forcing it to hustle for more than 1 hour between sleep cycles. If the animal is wounded or has taken any nonlethal damage or ability score damage, the DC increases by 2. If your check succeeds, the animal performs the task or trick on its next action.

This is all if Tarlane thinks it's even possible, just peppering some SRD docs into this chance. :)

I can see my character interacting with Jereth that way in the future, I'd love to work out some "tricks" like this.
