Man I'm Worn Out

Off-Topic Discussions

Long, long day today. I'm so worn out. Step son had surgery for a broken femur (he managed to snap the end off above the knee), and we went in at 1 p.m this afternoon, and didn't leave the hospital until 8 p.m.

On top of that, he needs to go back in tomorrow to have his leg drained and braced back up again. I called my boss' boss to ask him for another day off so I could take him back in tomorrow (none of his friends have a van, and his whole leg has to be from the hip down to his ankle), and he was pretty worthless ("you'll have to ask your boss about that one, I don't want to okay that")

So, I have to get up early enough to ask my boss if I can take off tomorrow, get my step son in to the doctor, and potentially run into work way early to do some paperwork in case the rest of the guys in the office can't handle it.

Nothing particularly noteworthy here, just had to blow off a little steam after a really, really long day.

That happened to my friend Shane once. Got hit by two guys while playing football. He said it was the single most painful experience of his life. Note: this is coming from a guy who's a part-time bouncer and gets in major fistfights almost daily (he's also been stabbed and sprayed with pepper spray).

Yeah, my wife and I were really surprised, because my step son rarely complains about pain of any kind, and when he came out of it after the surgery, he was in so much pain he was crying. They shot him up a few times with morphine before he finally calmed down a little.

It was pretty harrowing. His sister is taking care of him tonight and making sure he wakes up to take his pain meds through the night.

I hope your young man's ok KEJR. Screw work, be there for your family - if your boss is human, he'll understand.

Sucks, man. I hate being "too useful" at the job. Never gets me nothing.

Hope your stepson heals up real good, bro.

Eh, my boss is usually fine, its my boss' boss that is the . . . problematic one. I really appreciate the well wishes though. I think he'll be fine, but he's going to be in physical therapy for a while after this. Its times like this that its kind of nerve wracking that he insisted on moving out when he went to college.

Best of luck to you and your son, brother. Hope he's managing to feel better soon.

I wish you, your son, and the rest of the family well, KEjr. Your son should come first, but your boss's boss might not see that. Good luck and I hope that your son heals quickly!

Yowch! Even now I still find it amazing to think of bones as “bleeding,” such an odd thing to wrap your head around, and nothing bleeds internally quite like a femur break.

Nothing quite like the sound someone makes when you pull traction on a broken femur either, and there is that crazy high pitched noise like “aaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrgggggggg, oooooohhhhhhh ohhh, ahh, that’s...huh. That hurts, but not so bad….”

Glad to hear he is on the mend, sucks about getting the runaround at work.

I hope your stepson heals soon, KnightErrantJR.

Thanks for the well wishes everyone, it really means a lot to me. He's doing fine, got the drain tubes out, and is feeling a lot better today, although from time to time it still really, really hurts him. Still, he looked a lot better today.

Seriously, thanks all of you for the kind comments.
