Liberty's Edge

I'm looking to start up a Rise of the Runelords campaign as a play by post after a bit of chat yesterday in the DM tools chatroom.

So far I have two players who are ready to be involved, and I'm hoping to secure two or three more to round out the team. We want players who will post regularly and who are going to enjoy an RP heavy game as we build through the story.

I am strongly considering running this with Alpha rules, if all the players are willing to test them out and adapt their characters when the beta is released, but I don't mind running straight 3.5 if that is preferred among the group.

As for myself, so you know who you would be playing with, I am an experienced DM(I had a red box) who ventured mostly away from D&D for quite a while into the dark realms of WoD, CoC, Shadowrun, and yes even Rifts. Though for the last 5 years I've been playing with a group that is almost exclusively 3.x.

I tend to prefer evocative RP over pure combat, but I certainly see the fun in the tactical aspects of play and am not afraid to customize a scene to challenge my players, or alter parts of a story arc so that the characters fit more closely into the world.

I'm always about on these boards, so you can expect to get DM responses very quickly to any questions or posts you might put up.

If you have any interest in joining in our game, we hope to start next week, though earlier if we get an influx of people, please, post here or shoot me an email. Just add PbP in the subject line.

I'm interested in playing RoTRL as for character I would most likely start as a Fighter.

Liberty's Edge

Alright, and just because I'm trying to gauge which side of the fence the group sits on, are you looking towards 3.5 or would you like to try 3p Alpha/Beta?

-Tarlane

Sczarni

Either way works for me, I tend to play more martial characters (ranger rogue, or cleric) I'd prefer ranger, but if one of the other two is needed more I can make that up - Tarlane what character generation method are we using (or does that depend on the rules) I'm open to both PHRPG and 3.5 whichever others prefer.

I guess if i have a preference its for alpha/beta rules.

Liberty's Edge

Hmm, I’ve never played a PbP game here at Paizo. Played plenty of them on RPoL though. Anyway, I’d be interested in playing an Alpha/Beta Paladin. I should be able to post roughly once a day.

Liberty's Edge

Since it looks like people are leaning towards the alpha/beta, then I would probably wish to make use of the Alpha's point purchase system rather then rolling stats or the like.

I would say the High Fantasy(20 points) would be the way to go, that lets you hit an elite array and adjust from there and will give us a balanced party.

Looks like we are leaning towards a bit of a bruiser party, but things can be adjusted to make that work as long as everyone is happy with their characters.

-Tarlane

Sczarni

If I can sucessfully run a party with no cleric or arcane magic user through STAP (only death was a paladin who couldn't accept one of the moral delemmas) than this can be done too

Liberty's Edge

The paladin gets a small boost to his healing via the new turn mechanics and having a bit more of a diverse lay on hands in alpha too, so that should help a great deal. Plus with a couple wands, the ranger and paladin can help with between combat healing.

Still have one player who we are unsure what she is going to be(she should be around to decide in a couple hours) and are looking for one more party member too, I think to round it out with five characters.

Once we get that last party member we can start building characters and set the opening scene.

-Tarlane

I would be interested in playing. I wouldn't mind playing a healer type. Preference on a Druid.

Sczarni

One last question: what are we using for a dice roller? invisible castle? Irony games? DMtools? Something else?

Liberty's Edge

Well, welcome aboard everyone.

I myself am used to using Invisible Castle, but Irony Games seems to have a nice roller as well. Does anyone else have a preference?

It looks like we have our team so we can start statting up characters and trying to establish something of a background for everyone.

Just so I know where we stand on things, how familiar is everyone with Golarion in general and sandpoint/magnimar in particular? Have any of you run through or read through parts of RotRL before?

I've read through the first encounter of RotRL and have done a heavy skim of the players guide but thats about all I know. I've never used Irony Games before but have used Invisible Castle

I am the other player that he was waiting for, and I've pretty much decided I am going to play a monk.

Liberty's Edge

So it seems we are looking at:

Fighter
Ranger
Paladin
Druid
Monk

Not too roguish, in the trapfinding sense, or arcane at all, but definitely combat capable. Will be an interesting run.

Any thoughts on what you all wanted for races?

-Tarlane

Liberty's Edge

I'm working on the idea of a human. So far my concept is named Jereth. He is a young squire out on his own for the first time. Perhaps his master is missing in the Sandpoint area? He's a very idealistic person who does his best to take everyone at face value. That's about as far as I've gotten.

I've skimmed the AP before but that was a while ago and I have deliberatly packed it away when I realized it way more likely that I would play in it then run it. I take great pains not to metagame if you are concerned about that.

I've not used any of those dice rollers mentioned above. Would I need to use an online roller? If so then not a big problem. I'd just need to know where to find it.

Liberty's Edge

Wiglaf,

I wasn't so much thinking in terms of metagaming(I know that a lot of us will have read various amounts of info, we all obviously are into Paizo for some reason and thus on this site), I just was trying to learn how much information people already had about the area and the world so that knew what parts needed the heaviest descriptions and what parts would seem repetitive to hear for most people.

Having your Master have gone missing is a very easy plot hook to bring you into the adventure. Perhaps your character is from the Magnimar region(the nearest major city, about two days walk from Sandpoint) and the one you were apprenticing to left on a patrol through Sandpoint some days before and has not returned? That would give you good cause to be there.

Feel free to bounce whatever ideas sound good to you off me. I love having characters with fleshed out storylines.

-Tarlane

I breezed through some of the materials so I'm fairly familiar with Golarian thingies.

I wasn't having good luck with invisible castle, and prefer Irony's dice rolls.

Race wise I would like to play an Elf. (Love the idea of solid black eyes, it's cute in a scary way.)

Are any of the alternate Druid class features found in the PHB II allowed? specifically Shifter and Spontaneous Rejuvenation?

I have played through Burnt Offerings, having just killed Nualia last Saturday with a tabletop group, but I am willing to start fresh from the beginning and would never meta game.

Tarlane: If you click on my avatar you can see my character as she was created in an alternate game, but I would like to bring at least her back story to this game as I don't think I'll be able to play her much and she is really fun for me.

I would like to play someone that really has no city experience, as a druid I really spent most of my time away from civilization. In that regards, I plan on playing a character that is almost an idiot savant. She knows nothing about modesty, decorum etc, but knows how many legs a Dire Octapede has during the molting season.

Liberty's Edge

I figured that it wouldn't be too big of a problem. I just wanted to say it up front. Hope I didn't offend.

That plot hook is pretty much what I had in mind. Perhaps Jereth stayed behind due to illness and is now trying to catch up? Or he may have been running messages for his master and told to meet him in Sandpoint for the festival?

Having his master be a Knight, or some other kind of noble, from Magnimar is good. His master doesn't have to be a Paladin either. I'm thinking that Jereth doesn't know that there is anything special about him. He just has a very strong belief in goodness and justice. He doesn't fallow any one god, but looks more towards his conscience for guidance.

Here are some background ideas if anyone else wants to tie their background in with Jereth's. Jereth grew up as a Page boy in one of the lesser noble houses of Magnimar. He is a younger son of his own noble house, of which he knows little about since being fostered with the noble family that trained him at age four. He enjoys horses and riding, and has some skill with the lance. Due to his kind and charming nature he often found himself trying to work out disputes between the other Page Boys. He also has a passion for singing.

(Editing to add; I'm currently going through the Player's Guide for RotRL again. I don't own anything beyond the AP materials though so if there is something else that you want to use you might have to feed it to me. I have no problem reading through the information on Magnimar provided in the APs if you want me to. Just let me know.)

-Tarlane

I've run the first 1/2 of the first adventure, and know the basics of what happens in most parts but no specifics.. And I'm good at keeping player knowledge and character knowledge separate.

Edit: I might be a really interesting ranger... as a whole I refuse to play as a human, I have to decide what race I want to be though

Oh I think you will be interesting to play with.

Why thank you, I promise to mostly behave myself. Mostly.

I don't have access to my physical books at the moment(I'm theoretically working) but let me look when I get home and see how some of the PHB II feats will interact with the pathfinder stuff before I make a call on that.

I just skimmed through your background, and beyond the fact that I'm leaning towards not using flaws(we are already testing the new system, I don't want to toss too many alternate rules on top of it), I don't have an overall problem with the idea, however I will more leave that up to a vote with the rest of the group. I have no problem with more mature themes(and this AP certainly has its share in different ways), and it is easy enough to sort of off screen or boot scene anything that is too direct(Love Tracy Hickman for coming up with that term, basically in old star trek you'd know Kirk was with all the aliens, but you would just always come into scene with him putting on his boots), but I just want to be sure that everyone will be comfortable with a character that is that overt.

If you play out the androphobia without having the flaw, that certainly will be rather interesting since the party is 3/2 men. Will definitely add a bit of tension there I'm sure.

If everyone is alright with this background, then I may have some ideas that can play into the nymph history a bit further down the road.

Pfft, behaving is no fun anyways.

Thank you for checking, I don't need to use the flaw for feats generation rules at all and still play the character I would like to play. I will keep the flaws as quirks and don't need a thing for it.

D-

Liberty's Edge

No problem here. So long as everyone respects each other I don't see it becoming an issue. Besides, it could be fun to role play through some of those awkward moments.

Edited to add; I'm working on a potential character sheet and I had a quick question. Since humans have an automatic martial weapon prof, but Paladins get every martial weapon prof anyway is there a way that I can exchange that human trait for an exotic weapon prof or a weapon focus? If not that's cool. Figure it couldn't hurt to ask.

Hehe, we'll have to see about that.

But I suppose I should provide a little background of my character as well. Her name is Damia Sorn. She is Vudrani, and was found as an infant by Sabyl Sorn. Sabyl runs the monastery in Sandpoint, and they are both worshipers of Irori.

Liberty's Edge

Any thoughts on what would bring you to Sandpoint, Danni?

I know your character is planning on being out adventuring at this point and seems to have a number of reasons to seek out human settlements built into her. If you wish, you can also take into account that there has been a great deal of goblin activity of recent and that could have driven her from a forest to find someone to help her out.

Or, if you seek to combine backgrounds with Jeroth, maybe the knight Jeroth was squired to was female who occasionally made these 'guard patrols' near the sandpoint area to meet with your character as her lover? Your character could have seen her captured by goblins and come to sandpoint where she was to meet her squire to request his aid in rescuing her? Obviously that would require you to overcome some fears in doing so, but it would give you reason to join with a party that is mostly male.

Tarlane: That is an idea I have no issues with, and I kinda like it matter of fact.

Sczarni

I'm cool with anything - just FYI I'm going to be on vacation July 19-26

Looking at either a halfling or gnomish ranger. I think i may stat them both out and see which i can write a better background for

Liberty's Edge

No problem here. Shall we say that Jereth doesn't know about your relationship with his Mistress? She may have thought that the prim and proper young man she was training was too straight laced to understand.

Liberty's Edge

Sounds good, Kirstov. Just show us what you've got when you start sorting it out and we'll try and find out who we can work in together and make sure everyone else at least has reason to join the group when it does form.

-Tarlane

Wiglaf wrote:

Danni would drop the hint fairly quick, as she has no shame in sleeping with women, Or any 'filter' on her thoughts. However, I will say before we start, I haven't spilled the beans yet.

D-

Liberty's Edge

Feel free to run with the backgrounds however suits you guys the best. I was just trying to toss out some ideas for you that could have ramifications later in the module.

I want you to be happy with your characters after all.

-Tarlane

Here is a look at what I'm putting together. I didn't put in the character sheet itself because I wasn't sure if you wanted everything in the profile or not. Please let me know how you would prefer this to be done.

Edit; Danni, why don't we say that the two of us meet, and figure out our connection, as the adventure begins. Perhaps she were given a description of Jereth and recognizes him as he rides into town on the day of the festival? We should work out some kind of signal or something that would tell him that she knows his Mistress. Perhaps a letter? Or some secret that only those close to his Mistress might know, her first name perhaps?

First name is a good start, though a special mark in a secret place is more my forte. /grin

Something as simple as her favorite riding gloves she lost in the scuffle would suffice though.

D-

Liberty's Edge

First name said when showing him her favorite riding gloves. That's a great idea.

Liberty's Edge

For characters, having the info in a profile works well for me as it makes it very easily accessible for everyone. However, I do know that formatting it is quite a bother on its own.

I have been thinking to set up a photobucket account that I could use to put up pictures and maps that I wished to share with you guys to give you visuals of the descriptions I was making, and if you'd like to keep up real character sheets, you could send them to me and I'll post them there as well.

Salama has made a pretty impressive character sheet for alpha three here and there are a number of other good ones floating around on the boards.

Salama's is form fillable, so you can edit it directly, and while adobe reader doesn't allow you to save pdfs unless you have the pay versions, foxit is a pdf reader that does and is free.

Let me know what your thoughts are on this, its easy enough to do both profile and pdf character sheets for those who like them as well.

-Tarlane

Well, I've put together a character sheet and put it in the profile. I've got no problem just using that. Please let me know what you think about the sheet. I'm willing to make changes.

There is just a brief description of Damia currently. I am working on the character sheet and will eventually add that on as well.

Liberty's Edge

Jereth,

Your HP looks like it should be a little bit higher, remember in alpha you get +1hp per level for being your races favorite class, which as a human can be anything.

Also, do we have any preferences for the starting hit point options in the book? Does everyone want to go with standard, or would you like to try one of the other methods? I show a preference towards 'racial' myself.

-Tarlane

Hmm, missed that. Thanks. Also, I wouldn't mind using the Racial hit points rule.

I better look over the alpha, I have yet to try it.

If you, meaning either Danni or the DM, don't object I'm thinking that Jereth's Mistress is named Dame Elaina Keldonza.

Sczarni

looks like I'm doing a gnomish ranger - this is the first time i havn't done 4d6 drop lowest so I might not have the best stats, and I'm not being favored class so that hurts HP.. I should have a full background by noontime tomorrow.

Liberty's Edge

Would it be too late for me to join in? I've been wanting to do a PbP game and always seem to find one too late.

Liberty's Edge

Danni- Its well worth the read. I run a tabletop game every other week and we are using a number of aspects out of it, and they have all been well received. It is very much like the standard 3.5 in a lot of ways, but a number of things have been cleaned up(in particular they boosted some of the base classes a bit to bring them more in line with splat books.

Jereth- If its acceptable between you and Danni, then I am hardly going to complain if you take the job of naming the NPC from your backgrounds out of my hands.

Kirstov- Sounds good to me, we all seem to be getting things together well. I look forward to reading it tomorrow.

Aegrist- I was looking to hold up at 5 players, both because we are using the Alpha rules and it has been a while since I ran a PbP and I don't want to overload myself either way, adding more players tends to slow things down. But if you are interested and want to shoot me an email at felixcosima at yahoo dot com then I will hold your name and if someone is unable to run with the game I will make sure to let you know and you can hop in.

-Tarlane

Liberty's Edge

Jereth,

I noticed in your background that you posted up a little thing about the paladin code. I saw this in a different thread a while back and had saved it, I thought you might find it interesting.

• Justice: Seek always the path of good, unencumbered by personal interest. Recognize that the sword of justice can be a terrible thing, so it must be tempered by humanity and mercy.

• Loyalty: Be known for unwavering commitment to the people and ideals you choose to live by. There are many places in life where compromise may be needed. Loyalty is not among them.

• Defense: Seek always to defend your nation, your lord, your family, your companions, and those whom you believe worthy of loyalty.

• Courage: Being a paladin often means choosing the more difficult path, the personally expensive one. Be prepared to make personal sacrifices in service of the precepts and people you value. At the same time, a paladin should seek wisdom to see the difference between courage and foolishness. Courage also means taking the side of truth in all matters, rather than seeking the expedient lie.

• Faith: A paladin must have faith in his beliefs, for faith roots him and offers hope against despair.

• Humility: Place value upon the contributions of others. Do not boast of your own accomplishments, wait for others to do this for you. Tell the deeds of others before your own, according them the renown rightfully earned through virtuous deeds.

• Largess: Be generous insofar as your resources allow. Place the needs of others before your own. Keeping this in mind makes decisions regarding justice much simpler.

• Nobility: Seek great stature of character by holding to the virtues and duties of a paladin. Realize that, though one can never teach such ideals, the quality of striving toward them makes one truly noble. Through your nobility you can also influence others, offering a compelling example of what one can accomplish in the service of good.

• Principle: Although a paladin shows wisdom in his actions and commits no act without due consideration, when in doubt, do what is right and good for its own sake. Truth, virtue, fidelity, and honor are motives unto themselves, and each is larger than any single paladin.

• Franchise: Seek all these achievements as sincerely as possible, not for the reason of personal gain but because it is right. Do not restrict your exploration to a small world, but seek to infuse every aspect of your life with these qualities. Should you succeed in even a tiny measure, you will be well remembered for your quality and virtue.

-Tarlane

This is the character I'm planing to use for this please give him a once over I was rushing when I stated him up. I should have something for background tomorrow but I'll probably keep it simple for now. I'm going to be busier this week then I expected to be.
