Jason: Re: Escape Artist

Skills & Feats

1 person marked this as a favorite.

In my group's playtest tonight, we encountered a potential problem. According to the Combat section, p77, of the Alpha 3 Playtest Rules:

Quote:
Generally speaking, these rules also make performing these maneuvers a bit more difficult than they were under the 3.5 rules set. We also removed the opposed roll for these maneuvers, much for the same reasons.

So my question is, where does this leave the Escape Artist skill? In the 3.5 rules, it could be used as an opposed roll against a grapple attempt. So how does it work now? There is no listing for any changes to it (or any listing for it at all, for that matter, beyond the listing on table 5-4)in the Skills section. Would it replace a normal CMB roll in a grapple situation? Inquiring minds want to know...

It's under grappling in the combat chapter. You can try to leave a grapple with a CMB check (15+CMB) or with escape artist (10+CMB)

Given how you were confused about the issue, Shadowborn,
hopefully in Beta we'll see Escape Artist along with Feint and Tumble
(all Skill Rank based actions interacting with CMB/BAB)
cleared up and consolidated with regards to their mechanics sub-systems
and their placement in the overall rules layout (under CMB and/or Skill descriptions)

*looks again* Yes, you're quite correct. If it was a snake, it would have bit me.

I'll chalk it up to fatigue from finals...

Still leaves me with the question of why the target DC is so much lower than attempting to break the grapple by force. That gives Dex-based characters quite the advantage in unarmed combat situations...

CMB advances with character level automatically, escape artist you have to invest in skill points to advance it. It makes sense to me that if you invest skill points specifically in getting out of harry situations you should be pretty good at it.
