New players want to *Start* with Pathfinder RPG

Alpha Playtest Feedback General Discussion

[edit]

I was at my FLGS today and overheard a table full of people say they have never played Dungeon & Dragons before.

To get these people to play Pathfinder RPG we need to make it easy on them to get their books, learn the game, and join the community.

An easy to use 'start guide' is greatly needed.

Can you write up directions that newbies can understand for getting to the exact ordering points?

Thank you.

  • Which books do newbie DnD players need to study in order to be able to play the Pathfinder RPG system?

  • Links with 'ordering information' would be helpful.

  • I am trying to get an email together that I can just send to new players with everything they need to get.

At the moment, you still need the 3.Edition Dungeons and Dragons Players Handbook, Dungeon Masters Handbook and Monster Manual. These are, as far as I know, still available as pdf downloads from rpgnow.com and are probably still on sale at most shops that sell RPG products (at least for the moment). Alternatively, you could consult the d20srd.org website.

The Alpha 3 playtest is available as a download pdf, but it is a book of changes rather than a complete version of the rules.

In August this year, the Pathfinder Beta will be released as a free pdf download and physical book. This will replace the Players Handbook and Dungeon Masters Handbook.

Next August, the final hardback of Pathfinder will be released.

At some point in the future, a Monster Compendium of some kind will be released for Pathfinder but three is no date scheduled for this.

Hope that helps, and I hope you enjoy the game.

    Now you're asking.

    RPGnow

    d20SRD.org

    Pathfinder RPG

I'd recommend against ordering the pdfs of the 3.5 products as they'll be replaced in a couple of months and are still at full price, which I imagine will deter your players.

The d20SRD will give you all the rules for 3.5 and is nicely organised, and the Alpha will highlight the current changes.

In August, get the Beta and you'll have the core of the rules.

EDIT: The Pathfinder link includes pre-order links and links to the current Alpha, but they're at the end of the blog.

    Beta

The Alpha is a free download. There will be a free Beta pdf for download and a book for $24.99 in August.

If you want to get them started before, I'd recommend the SRD site until the Beta comes out rather than trying to convince them to buy books that will soon be redundant.

    What about the 3.x books?

Unfortunately, the pdfs have been taken down from rpgnow, so it looks like they've been removed.

Also can't find them on Amazon, so it looks like they are no longer available. This means it'll have to be the SRD which is less than ideal.

Check out Ebay for good deals on 3x books. I've spent about a hundred dollars in the last month and have obtained 20-25 new 3e books, half of them from WotC, in an effort to round out some of my collection.

You should be able to pick up just about any 3e book new from Ebay at the moment for no more than $5-10 plus shipping.

Looks like the goal is to make 4.0 the only game in town.

They don't need *all* 3.x books, just the core in order to play Pathfinder RPG.

    Provide links. :-)

  • All on ebay, so might not be there when they come to buy:

    Players Handbook

    Dungeon Masters Guide

    Monster Manual

    Tensor,

Even more important than purchasing the D&D PCH and DMG these LGS newbies need to find a group with some play experience.

In other words, YOU need to teach them the basics.

Take a few minutes at the LGS and show them the salient points to get started. Share e-mails with them. Give them some suggestions and advice. Try to find a place or two in your own schedule to go to a couple of their first sessions. Invite one or two of them to join your group for a session or two.

Finally, send them to your fellow Paizonians. Here, we can answer all kinds of questions. Make sure they let us know who referred them to the Boards -- this way we can ask them what your gender really is.

Oh, if only I could teach everyone in the world how to play....

Once Beta is released in two months, this will be all they need to play. As the DM, you'll likely want to have the MM around, as well as whatever splatbooks you enjoy . . . but for the newbies - Beta It.

Also, you can get a good deal on the 3.5 books (core and non-core alike) at used bookstores, in particular Half Price Books. They normally have the core books available, and a spotty selection of other stuff, but overall a decent RPG section of the store.

Oye. Buying the 3.5 books to teach people Pathfinder RPG... so bad.

I would look for the D&D Player's Kit over buying the 3 books mentioned. The Player's Kit comes with the Player's Handbook and teaches you how to play the game. Once you're done with that, you can figure out what Pathfinder RPG's differences are with Paizo's free PDF (which I assume has already been downloaded.)

The stuff you REALLY need from the Dungeon Master's Guide is already in the Pathfinder book. So I don't see the point of buying it.. especially with the printed and complete version of Pathfinder RPG coming out in August (even if it's still a test version.)

When you're ready for playing and need monsters you can get them here..

    Dark Archive

You can still get 3.5 books on Amazon.com for $20 new or $12.50 used.

Hi, ive just joined up with the site and have downloaded the free pathfinder pdf but when i try to open it it asks for a pdf security password, any help?

    Scarab Sages

    Welcome to the boards, Craig.

In your downloads page, have you personalised the file?
Click that, come out, leave for a minute, read something else, go back in and download. Does that help?

    First post...I'm feeling so old...
