The Monk and DR.

Races & Classes

The monk gets the "magical" equivalent to his attacks, overcoming DR/Magic.

Does that then equal the +1 equivalent to damage reduction? Does the monk then overcome the P/S/B DR with that ability or does that not confer and only apply to magic?

If not, given the new DR rules this complicates the monk. The expensive amulet of the mighty fists then has a much greater roll in the monks arsenal. I like the optional idea of handwraps (especially to convey additional abilities to the monk like bane or ghost touch) but this would also make it important would it not?

He can of course use monk weapons, but I always like to avoid those if possible. Since the golf-bag idea has been tossed out with the new DR rules (YEA!) I think there should also be an effort to simplify the character that isn't supposed to need alot of gear...the monk.

My ideas for a monk fix:

Add new light armor:
Robe +0 AC -Max Dex -ACP 5%SF 30 ft.
Special: This armor counts as unarmored for monk-ability purpose.

Add to improved unarmed damage:
For melee weapons you can use in flurries, you can choose to deal unarmed or standard weapon damage.

Now, fighters and monks are compatible, monks don't have to use armor bracers

and

they can do damage AND hit in combat.

Thoughts?

I think the Monk should use weapons. There is virtual no real martial art that tells you to ignore weapons.

With my rule fix there isn't a point to do this in d20, either.

Slightly clarified and rejigged in the [Tweaked and rejigged] Ki pool and ki powers - p.30 post.

cool ideas.

I love the idea of treating robes as armor. One of the builder books has some kind of gnome scarf thing that is AC+1, 0%ASP, -ACP, and enchantable. This means that arcanists get armor that they wouldn't otherwise be able to wear (the same issue applies to arcanists that applies to monks with regard to armor special abilities).

Likewise, handwraps being treated as weapons would be nice. The damage could be between unarmed and a gauntlet, but non-lethal (d4 for medium). If a monk uses them, then the monk can use his own damage, including the ability to deal lethal damage.

These two items in the game would definitely serve to "uncomplicate" a lot of issues people have with the monk.

The text in the monk can be re-worded so that wearing armor does not automatically deny the monk's AC bonus, but that they don't stack at all. The monk can use his bonus or an armor bonus, but not both. This could help a low-WIS monk to have a better flat footed AC, and it would encourage monks to build special abilities into their armor rather than max out the AC bonus for it.
