Ability scores and spellcasting

Alpha Release 3 General Discussion

Hi, okay first off I love that paladins have cha as their casting stat now, but this leads to one of my biggest beefs with WotC classes.

Casting based off of ability scores, namely that when int or wisdom is used for casting it is supposed to be memorized and when cha is used it is supposed to be spontaneous. WotC decided to throw that out the window and just make every class ever after core cast as a sorcerer. Please do not follow in their footsteps.

Either make paladins spontaneous spellcasters or return them to wisdom based spellcasters. Use the right flavor for abilities otherwise you might as well get rid of gnomes and throw in dragonborn. The flavor is as important as the crunch.

The flavor is as important as the crunch.

No its not

Then why not just make the switch to 4e?

But come to think of it, this isn't even really a flavor issue, the ability scores interaction with spellcasting is crunch. So rather than try and turn this into a debate on flavor vs. crunch why not comment on what the point of the post is about?

Im glad they switched it to Cha but i see your point in stream lining Cha Spontanous Int Wis Not So i will concede that to you

I like the change to Cha-based casting. I think that paladins should be able to spontaneously cast their spells and be able to cast any spell on their list that are available to them (like warmages).

Paizo are well-known to be lovers of the gnome and have spent a lot of time developing some really cool flavor for them. Gnomes are here to stay.

Dragonborn are WotC IP and not OGL. They aren't available. So wishing for them is a complete waste of time.

Dude I think you are seriously misreading what I wrote. The key point being "or you might as well." I don't want either of those things to happen, so telling me they won't in no way changes my point. In fact we actually agree.

What I was saying is that if you are changing the way the flavor of abilities interacts you might as well change the rest. I want Paladins to be charisma based casters, but if you are a charisma based caster you cast spontaneously, weither divine or arcane (the favored soul is proof of this)
