NPC Classes (Pgs. 130-133)

Races & Classes

I have always considered commoner to be the same as laborer. However, they have a smaller hit die than experts, which I have considered skilled craftsmen. Am I wrong in this thinking?

Personally, I have never liked the way NPC classes are handled. If a character is 15th level it should be roughly equivalent to any other 15th level character. I am not saying that they should be as combat worthy as adventuring classes. They should have abilities related to their place in their community. Is Pathfinder considering to rework NPC classes like they did the adventuring classes?

Hm, I wasn't paying that much attention to the hit dice. You may have a point. Maybe the HD should be swapped?

I do have another, different issue, though. Why is there no NPC arcane caster? Personally, I make the 'Adept' an arcane caster and change the name of the current divine caster to 'Acolyte'.

So, anyone else have similar issues?

Agreed on that front, i would really like to see a couple more NPC casters to represent different roles. From crazed cultists to village hedge witchs.

I was certainly hoping to see some kind of upgunning for some of the NPC classes. Not least maybe allowing aristocrats & warriors limited access (given their fencing school/military training options) to qualify for fighter feats (specialisation, etc) as if a fighter of half their total aristocrat and/or warrior levels.
Ah well; maybe as an option in the Pathfinder DMG II whenever that comes out....

I agree. I actually had to check the SRD because I never realized that Adepts had always been strictly divine casters. I always assumed they were a hybrid.

So, yeah, I'd love to see an arcane Adept and a divine Acolyte. Very similar in HD, skill points, etc, just one arcane and one divine.

I'd also like to see a Rogue-lite called a thief or cutpurse or something.

See I want NPC classes to remain unchanged, PC classes are supposed to be for the special, NPC classes for the teeming masses, the teeming masses should completely suck that's what they are there for, to suck so your pc is that much more special.

I would like an arcane caster added though.

The Expert should be capable of that, what with any 10 skills as class skills and 6 + Int skill points. I don't think an NPC rogue-lite class needs anything beyond skills and a good Ref save.

And consider me another vote for an arcane NPC caster.

I think the NPC classes work as written for their purpose. The only proviso I add in my games (to justify why anyone would level up in such a class) is that it is easier to advance in NPC classes, requiring 25% less XP (50% less for commoners). So the teeming masses who just want their Skill Focus (Profession Farmer) continue to take levels in Commoner.

It really depends on the flavor of the world. If the civilized world tends to have small magics scattered everywhere, more magical NPCs might be called for.

I liked the magewrights in Eberron, because they had the ability to craft small magic items for everyday people - no longer requiring adventuring wizards craft everything. I also like the Gleaner by Keith Baker, listed on the Giant in the Playground site, a "druid lite" who assists with farm work, crop growth, livestock care, etc. It fit a great niche in everyday life that didn't step on the druid's toes.

I think the classes work but that the mix of them will be different from region to region. Personally I equate commoner with serf and expert with educated. So in feudal systems, most people will be commoners. In systems with good, easily accessed education, most will be experts.

And there maybe should be a hedge wizard base class in the Beta.

Mmm...I have played an old school adept in a long term campaign before now.

Not sure I agree with that. A sailor should be a type of expert. More skills and tougher than a commoner.
