Folks fete the Founding Festival with fireworks. Where would one want to watch to get a glimpse of gunpowder? Is it just Janderhoff? Might men more close to Korvosa contrive to craft any? My clever characters realized that some rival rich kids are planning a party and providing the pyrotechnics, so my players are plotting a prank.
I just need to figure out the source of the fireworks and what would be involved in some minor sabotage, such as possibly including some sky-writing extolling the PCs or dissing the NPCs. What's the source of Korvosa's fireworks?

I would agree that the 'good' fireworks are most likly magical in nature (see the fireworks at bilbo's birthday in fellowship) pryotechnics , possibly with minor illusions and ghost sounds added. The gunpowder ones would be the cheaper 'boring ones' that your snotty players would think are worthless.

Yeah, what those fellas said. Most of the fireworks are magical in nature. The "real" fireworks, those created by gunpowder, aren't nearly as impressive as what magic can do.
As for mundane fireworks, almost all of the gunpowder in the Inner Sea region comes from Alkenstart, in eastern Garund. Some comes over the Crown of the World from Tian Xia, though. And I'm sure a little bit gets made in Avistan, just to make fireworks.

You may want to make some fireworks accountable to the Craft (Alchemy) mechanics. The higher the DC, the more spectacular the firework. In this case, a Craft (Alchemy) check could be used to sabotage the firework display. For instance, House X may be displaying it's wealth and power by a grand display. The prank could be that at the highlight of the display, the firework of House X spells out the name of House Y. Bitter recriminations and petty jealousy ensue.
Of course, to sabotage such a firework means seducing the person who knows where the best fireworks are kept, infiltrating the warehouse, bypassing guards, performing the Craft check, and then sneaking out. Whatever you need to keep the event fun.
