Rearranging Weapon Focus / Specialization and Combat Maneuvers

New Rules Suggestions

Liberty's Edge

Following up on the rejigged Weapon Training/Weapon Mastery rules, I am suggesting updated rules for Weapon Focus/Specialization to better integrate these feats with combat maneuvers and reflect the idea that being more proficient in a given weapon should grant bonuses to combat maneuvers involving that weapon. The prerequisites are also aligned with the Weapon Training progression levels.

Weapon Focus
Choose one type of weapon. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple (or ray, if you are a spellcaster) as your weapon for purposes of this feat.
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, base attack bonus +1.
Benefit:
You gain a +1 bonus on all attack rolls you make using the selected weapon. When you perform a combat maneuver with that weapon, you gain a +2 bonus to your CMB. When you are defending against a combat maneuver which targets that weapon, you add +2 to the DC of the combat maneuver.
Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

Greater Weapon Focus
Choose one type of weapon for which you have already selected Weapon Focus. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple (or ray, if you are a spellcaster) as your weapon for purposes of this feat.
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, Weapon Focus with selected weapon, BAB +8.
These bonuses stacks with other bonuses on attack rolls and combat maneuver checks, including the one from Weapon Focus
Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.

Notes
In the updated rules, Greater Weapon Focus is not a fighter-only feat. With a BAB +8 prerequisite, it becomes accessible at the same time as the second Weapon training option in the updated rules (rejigged Weapon Training/Weapon Mastery rules)

Weapon Specialization
Choose one type of weapon for which you have already selected the Weapon Focus feat. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple as your weapon for purposes of this feat. You deal extra damage when using this weapon.
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, Weapon Focus with selected weapon, BAB +5.
Benefit: You gain a +2 bonus on all damage rolls you make using the selected weapon.
Special: You can gain this feat multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.
Notes
In the updated rules, Weapon Specialization is not a fighter-only feat. With a new BAB +5 prerequisite, it becomes accessible at the same time as the first Weapon training option in the updated rules (rejigged Weapon Training/Weapon Mastery rules)

Greater Weapon Specialization
Choose one type of weapon for which you have already selected Weapon Specialization. You can also choose unarmed strike or grapple as your weapon for purposes of this feat.
Prerequisites: Proficiency with selected weapon, Greater Weapon Focus with selected weapon, Weapon Focus with selected weapon, Weapon Specialization with selected weapon, BAB +12.
Benefit: You gain a +2 bonus on all damage rolls you make using the selected weapon. This bonus stacks with other bonuses on damage rolls, including the one from Weapon Specialization.
Special: You can gain Greater Weapon Specialization multiple times. Its effects do not stack. Each time you take the feat, it applies to a new type of weapon.
Notes
In the updated rules, Greater Weapon Specialization is not a fighter-only feat. With a BAB +8 prerequisite, it becomes accessible at the same time as the second Weapon training option in the updated rules (rejigged Weapon Training/Weapon Mastery rules)

Fixed typo:

Greater Weapon Specialization
[...]

In the updated rules, Greater Weapon Specialization is not a fighter-only feat. With a BAB +12 prerequisite, it becomes accessible at the same time as the third Weapon training option in the updated rules (rejigged Weapon Training/Weapon Mastery rules)

Tagged for another rejigging. :-)
