I like the new version of this spell. The bard in my campaign used it (and has used it frequently over the campaign), and while the lack of a save every round changes its dynamic a bit, it does seem like it might be more tactically useful with the longer duration. I've yet to see how the "grease an item held" option works.
However, this leads me to a question. While I like this version of grease better, was grease that problematic that it needed a redesign? I'm not saying its not an improvement, but I guess what I'm wondering is, are a large number of spells going to get tinkered with?
Part of what I was hoping for was that mainly the largely troublesome items in 3.5 would get delt with, but borderline or minor issues would likely not change much, not because they couldn't be better, but because they could be left alone without much of a problem and because even a fix might not be seen as better by people used to the original version of the spell.
Don't get me wrong, I understand that spells that needed changes to them due to CMB and held conditions and the like needed new wording, that the polymorph issues is indeed an issue, and that some spells like cure minor and cause minor needed replacements. But the more minor mechanics are tinkered with, the more of a learning curve Pathfinder has over 3.5, and I think this will cause some problems with people picking this up and running with it.
If you add new abilities to the fighter or paladin, for example, but most of the class stays the same, its fairly easy to see the changes. If a bunch of spells have little "fixes" to them, though, the more you introduce some problems with some people knowing the spell of the top of their head from 3.5 and conflicting with the new RAW. In fact, spells that you can remember off the top of your head seem to be the ones that are the least in need of alteration.
Again, I like this version, don't get me wrong, but I was just wondering where the line is? Is every spell going to be looked at and potentially tweaked? Is this a spell that people had problems with that I wasn't aware of? Were there problems at Paizo over how this spell affected a campaign? I'm just curious, because I was hoping that only changes that really, really needed to be made would be made, and obviously that line is different for everyone, but I'm still hoping that it doesn't get too pervasive.
Thanks for the hard work on this, and I really do like the spell . . .
