I've recently acquired enough Gamemastery Item cards so that I can pretty much represent every item in the world for my players. However, now I am wanting to get something to represent the coins that they have. At first I looked on Paizo and saw the Treasure Chest Coins they have, but they are way out of my price range for the scale I'm going to need. I thought about getting perhaps enough poker chips to represent plat, gold, silver, and copper. I had planned to use a Sharpy pen to denote different denominations such as 10, 100, 1000, etc. My problem with the poker chips is I can't really tell how big they are from online, I was hoping to find some the size of a nickel and even poker chips are quite expensive. I also thought about getting something to represent gems. Anyone have any suggestions or ideas, I would greatly appreciate it.

Well, for gems I would suggest either marbles or those little disk shaped stones that you can usually find with floral supplies. People put them in vases to gain decorative effects and they come in a range of different colors. They are usually quite inexpensive.
As for poker chips, they are quite a bit bigger than a nickel I thought. We bought a bunch of them at our local dollar store, but I don't know if you have that option near you.

I have used the plastic coins made for children for use with play kitchens and such... usually it's like a dollar or 2 for a good size pile of coins (like 400 assorted coins or something)

Of course, my suggestion is going to be for a product available here ;) but an inexpensive option aside from the treasure chest:
Chessex Glass Counters, notably the white and yellow. A bag of 40 counters is $4.50.

I've heard that some places called "banks" will sell you a bag of 40 "coins" for as low as $0.40. ;-)
Seriously, what don't you like about using nickels/dimes/pennies?

Two sessions ago my Players received a prop bag filled with "treasure" ... a bunch of SP and gems being used to pay them off for a recent job.
Actually within the Crown Royal bag were rolled and loose quarters (representing trade-bars and coins respectively) and jelly beans (for trade-gems).

Regular coins do work fairly well and don't require alot of translation. Just use 1gp/5gp/10gp/25gp.
For gems - beads or glass beads work well. Pente sets provide a collection of uniform "gems".
You can also find pyrite online or at some stores if you want an unfinished mineral look.

the bead section of most craft stores has all kinds of stuff (glass beads etc) that could be gems (unless your disbelief is destroyed by a small hole through it) some are even shaped like gems and in all kinds of different shapes and sizes, and any party goods store would probably have all the aforementioned coin substitutes
